⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ R160 being Permanently Swapped to G Line Service
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2021
- In an effort to streamline maintenance procedures and consolidate the maintenance of all CBTC-equipped R160 cars, the remaining R160s that were maintained at Coney Island Yard are being swapped over to Jamaica Yard. As a result, the G Line is being assigned R160s, with the line slated to become 100% R160 by the end of the month. In turn, the R46s and R68/As currently on the G will be displaced to the N, W, and Q lines, which will no longer operate R160-type cars. This video is a look at the very first few hours of R160 operation on the G. Enjoy!

When rare turns into daily
Lol ikr
Just like the N line. But the opposite
yes
I happen to see this yesterday on my way to work when a G train coming from Brooklyn pulled into Court Square. Good times being on the R46 and R68's on the G train. Awesome video ^^
The reason the announcement says "Via the F local line" is because the announcement program for the G was made when the R160s first entered service. Back then, the regular southern terminal for the G was Smith/9th Street, so running to Church Avenue was considered a reroute, and had the extra announcement. The program was never updated to reflect the extension to Church Avenue because the R160s never ran on the G, except during service changes.
It is so nice to see clean subway cars. That is such a difference from the 1970s with all its graffiti. New York can be proud of their subway.
Yessir
idk about proud
Not just yet... many of our stations are past due for repairs, renovations, accessibility, and climate resilient upgrades. Chambers St. on the J/Z train lines really captures the extent to which we need not be complacent even when all of the train lines have CBTC and NTT technologies.
@@xivinrah Yeah, Chambers St is just a weird place. Overbuilt (the designers were still thinking in railroad terminal terms) with the idea of trains coming from both directions, so it's got unused platforms. And water just seeps on constantly, leading to the air in the entire station having a cool, clammy feel. It's rather creepy.
@@xivinrah never fully gonna happen subway will never be fully repaired
Going to be interesting to see some tech trains on the G. Came home just in time!!
Woah, it'll be awesome to see the R160 (G) train and the R160 (F) train together!!!!!
This hit me out of nowhere. Was not expecting to hear news that R46s and R68s were leaving the G. I’ll miss them.

8:23 That's me throwing up the dueces! Haha I was surprised when I was waiting to pick up my train at Church.
It was definitely weird working the door controls on a new tech from what would be the alternate position with half of the train missing.
That’s awesome!! Glad you made it in the video - always appreciate friendly train crews. 😊
Agree that it’s a very odd set up. Definitely not as ergonomically convenient as the R46, where the MDC and zone indication lights are in the same line of sight as the outside of the train.

It's going to feel weird seeing a five-car R160 train on the Crosstown line but I guess it's time for a change, I'm going to miss seein' R46s and R68s on the line
I guess the G Train is back on Jamaica Yard with the old crew E F R Train hopefully MTA plans to extend to Forest Hills for late night, weekend exclusive or limited rush hours
Maybe weekend only, because E is local at night, don't think theres a need for two local trains at night. Weekends, R is by itself in Queen Blvd so weekend best fits it
Weekend extension is the best option. Queens Boulevard is pretty crowded during weekend "rush hour" times. The R takes like 17 minutes to arrive if you miss one.
@@Dezlite there's a need for it
You totally read my mind "lol"
@Ty Da Gamer but F is exp at night and the E is local, so there is one express and one local running there
No way!!! I’ve honestly kind of hated the lack of LED signage and lighting with the old ones so this is a positive change.
I feel like for a solid ten years, the New York City subway has seen no drastic shifts in its fleet placement. Then all of a sudden bam like three of them hit, this is the third time R160s have been moved around in the past year and a half!
fax yo
It's cool to see em though but man when the r211s roll in the nostalgia is gonna fade in to.
@@fresh1949 im gonna miss the r46s
Also not like anyone cares but if your wondering why the trains have "Queens Blvd" local on them is because the (G) used to run to Forest Hills-71st Av or Continental Av as it was known at the time, and stopped running on Queens Blvd as a result of the MTA Budget Cuts, the (G) was cut back to Court Square, the line we know today.
Minor swaps happen all the time, but I think the last major fleet swap of this scale was when Jamaica gave half of the R46 fleet to Pitkin in 2010.
I haven’t seen a 5-car R160 since they had their clearance testing almost 20 years ago.
It would be so cool if the announcements said “ This is a Long Island City bound train.”
Long Island city isn’t a borough, it’s a place in queens
The original was *This is a Long Island City-Court Sq bound G train, the next and last stop is: Long Island City-Court Sq.*
@@langstonreese7077 that’s very interesting perhaps it’s on file still?
Actually, its really "this is a court square g train".
Wow finally the g is all new tech 😍
Oct 8th was my birthday and I wanted the r160 somehow permanently moved to the g BEST BIRTHDAY EVER
It's like those who got used to R160s being on the G back in August of 2021 now have their wishes come true, even though it's not full length.
If you’re wondering why 5 cars, the G train was using 4 car X 75Ft trains, which was 300ft. Now the trains are 5 cars X 60ft, also 300ft
Thanks
the G is coming back home!
Oh my God I'm so excited I want to ride on the G train now
I did see a R160 5-car set on the G train earlier today at Court Square heading to Church Avenue.
Thanks for showing us the announcements too! No doubt they have announcements for every line, A - Z and 1 - 7.

@@arielgonzalez5296 That’s very good news for the MTA and their customers. Very good Ariel.
R.I.P. R46 Gs and R68 Gs!!!
In my opinion the G has been on the Queens Blvd Line since the beginning. So it still feel weird as to why they replaced it with the M. It should just run on the Weekends prior to 2010.
The 8 car R160s will be perfect for the (G) line. Imagine the R143s operating on the (G) that would be great.
Wow amazing!
About Time Their Moving R160’s to the (G) Line
I thought it was weird that I was seeing more R46s and R68s on the N/Q after seeing R160s on there for years. Soon the new tech trains will take over completely though!
Not necessarily, the R68s still have plenty of years to go before being replaced. Ya the Broadway will get newer NTTs but they will keep their R68s.
Wow, so it looks like the E/F/R and G will all be sharing now at Jamaica Yard, with no more older fleet for the G, and that takes over the N/Q/W.
Actually, its efmr lines.
That's amazing 👏
Rip to the legend R160 that was still on the N line
I got to get on a R68 G train last week before the swap.
R160s on the F, R and G fully, all the old trains now on the N/W & Q. Much different than when I lived in the city several years back.
I will believe this when they start regularly running on the G. LIC is a few stops from the building I am in. N Q W riders are going to be so mad at this, including my friend who lives in Gravesend.
This should be done by the end of the month.
The (N), (Q), (W) riders are fine. There's no complaining on the (N), (Q), (W) riders.
FROM OUT OF NOWHERE
Now that the R160s will take over on the G line, I hope MTA can re-extend the G line back to Forest Hills-71st Avenue via the IND Queens Boulevard Line for rush hour only between Court Square thanks to CBTC technology. Hopefully let’s keep our fingers crossed and see if it happens. I really missed the G train to Forest Hills since 2010.
No demand for that as of yet, especially when R train service can be increased instead. Also trackwork.
@@TheRailLeaguer Well the G train used to ran to Forest Hills all the time before the V train appeared in 2001. Then in late 2001 to 2010 it only ran between Court Square to Forest Hills-71st Avenue for the morning and evening rush hour commute, and all the G trains had R46s back in these days. I hope it runs rush hours once more to Forest Hills but this time with the R160s and CBTC technology.
@@TransitJoey1997 Rush hour service is already jammed over there, even with CBTC.
And quite frankly, the G has like zero business on the Queens Blvd Line. The Crosstown Local route is like the ugly duckling of the line, being the sole non-Manhattan route surrounded by a swarm of Manhattan-centric trains. A long term plan should be do disconnect the Crosstown Line from the Queens Blvd Line. From there, have the G rerouted northward via 31st Street to Astoria and eventually into the Bronx. With this, you can create a true crosstown subway, while leaving Queens Blvd for all Manhattan-bound service 24/7.
That might be a bit too hectic. Queens Corridor is jam packed on a normal day.
@@georgemay364 Track constraints and other weekend work have made part time G service on the Queens Blvd Line (where it really doesn’t belong anyway) impossible. In 2009, the G went to Forest Hills for only three weekends. They had enough and decided to just cut the dam thing back entirely.
I do have the other option of completely modifying the service patterns entirely. Here, you would remove the R from the Queens Blvd entirely. The M would also move via 63rd Street while the C and D train would receive modifications to its service pattern to allow for the C train to go express with the A from Harlem down to Lower Manhattan. This allows for a 20/7 K train route to operate between 71st Avenue and World Trade Center via 8th Avenue Local-53rd Street and Queens Blvd. the K would operate every 4-5 minutes during weekdays and every 6-10 minutes during weekends, as will the other services. There would be no overnight K service.
This service will negate the need for both the G and the R since service is more frequent.
Looks like the era of r46s and r68s on the g line is officially over
Now the R211As will fully be on the A, C, N, Q, and W lines since they still use R46s
@Dagamez DM oh yeah you're right they will also be on the Rockaway Shuttle

Finally. Yes!!
Am I the only one who doesn’t rally like the swap I’m really going to miss the R160s on N it’s was so iconic
R160s was the N
That does stink for the N/Q/W that the remaining R160s are going to pulled from them but one exception is in the morning the R to 96 street that becomes a Q train
I forgo about that at least the q will have 1 r160
It’s just the AM Rush Hour, it’s not gonna mean anything
Won’t be relatively long before the R211’s are in service the N,Q, and W will see tech trains again.
@@LagTag96 Maybe, maybe not. Meaning that the R160's could eventually come back to the N, Q and W line's. Where most the R211's will be assigned to the A, E, F and R train's. G train's may still have the R160's though but who knows what the MTA will decide. :-)

They should bring back the G to Forest Hills with the CTBC happening on the G now
As of now, it appears that it’s not on the table, though some trains will operate over there without any passengers (the passengers want Manhattan service).
@AzAzGod Really?
I mean it won’t be long that the (N) (Q) (W) trains won’t have NTTs. Basically every single line that uses the R46 will get the R211. I think the extra option order is gonna likely be used to retire the R68/As as well, meaning that the (B) (D) trains will also get the 211s. In fact I think the R160s are not that bad on the G line knowing what’s in store for the mainline routes. Honestly, I would not be surprised if the 211s would fit better on the (N) (Q) (W) trains than the 160s did. I am pretty sure that the 211s already have CBTC in it so I do believe that if everything is up-to-date, Queens Blvd and Coney Island can respectively share all of their cars respectively and it won’t matter whatsoever since everything would have CBTC. The 46 cars I believe are going to start to retire next year and they will likely be converted to work trains
No cars will be retiring the R68/As. There are not enough cars to expand service AND replace them. In fact, the R68/As were never proposed for retirement by 2025.
The second option order is SOLELY for service expansion. The entire order calls for 940 replacement subway cars, 75 Staten Island railway cars, and up to 1077 cars for fleet expansion.
Only the A line is confirmed for R211s. However, the other lines are uncertain, especially since Astoria CBTC was pushed back in favor of 6th Avenue.
@@TheRailLeaguer we never know. the mta probably wants to get rid of the OTT’s as fast as possible for CBTC. They could probably order even more r211s outside of the base/option orders to get rid of all the OTT’s together.
@@toxicrepstan1897 There is no third option order of R211s. The R211 contract specified 535 base order cars, 640 option 1 cars, 437 option 2 cars, and that’s it. Any replacements for the R68/As would be under a separate contract.
They need to bring those trains to the D Line Service.
Wow a 5 car train. I've never seen that in New York before.
Where did the G line get their 160s. JAM had extra equipment? We were told the N Q W units we being sent there but I still see the few we have operating.
The R160s are going to be moved from Coney Island to Jamaica Yard, with all of them over there by the end of the month.
Well, this is quite interesting. I like the R46s and R68/As on the G. But I also like the R160s on there as well. Well I mean I don't even live in NYC anyway but I am a Path train ride away. Any reason why they're using 5 cars as opposed to 10 cars? Same with the older rolling stock. Why 4 cars and not 8 cars?
We don’t have enough train cars yet.
@@TheRailLeaguer Hopefully with the R211 order we will get permanent 10 car r211 G trains.
@@toxicrepstan1897 My predictions for the fleet do have different cars for the G route, though the end result would be the same: 10-car G trains.
Note that this is contingent on getting that second option order for 437 cars, which will NOT be used for fleet retirements, but rather fleet expansion.
@@TheRailLeaguer Oh ok, thanks
@@toxicrepstan1897 they got the 160 so G will never get The 211/A
This is sad, no more R160s on N, W and Q, no more R68/A and 46 on G.
There’s still gonna be 1 R160 on the Q because of that one R train that goes to 96 and turns into a Q train.
So it's official the G trains are now permanently one r160s
So.... are they going to move the conductor boreds?
Would be great if they cleaned up the stations on the G line as well
Yess but I'm still bummed that we wont see r46s and r68s anymore
Looks like this is the right time to extend the G to Forest Hills 71 Av once again if they also made the cars of the G to 10 instead of 5
There is no demand or subway cars available for either, though some trains will operate on the line without picking up any passengers.
I mean the G train has a very low amount of avaliable trains, there were only like 52-60 train cars in total for the G so I guess you have a point
@@m34tgaming16 The G requires 13 trains for its normal service. With the R160s, that would mean 65 cars available in 5-car sets. There were about 70-90 cars at Coney Island, but they weren’t normally used for the G, so the G had to piggyback on the R46 and R68 fleet. Now with the move to Jamaica Yard, do expect that 90 or so cars to be used for the service (in 5-car units).
Ultimately this can be resolved with the R211 fleet, which should expand the number of cars in the entire fleet to allow for longer G trains, and for CBTC on wherever.
They should update the announcement instead of saying "via the F local line"
They prob will
My guess is that announcement program was made when the regular G terminal was still Smith/9th Street, so it was considered a service change for it to run to Church Avenue, hence the extra announcement.
9:33 that (G) train definitely said Queens Blvd Local… don’t get us too hopeful now 😵💫
So what they gonna do with the r46 and 68 put more on the N Q AND W line?
Yeah. Most likely 288 R46 cars on the N/W, 200 R68A and 40 R68 cars on the B, and the rest going to the Q (the 9 R68 single cars go to Franklin obviously).

Call me a foamer if you'd like. But I am legit FOAMING LIKE CRAZY. Never expected permanent new techs on the G this early. LET ALONE R160s! And 5 cars?? I'm gonna have to get used to that. Now we get to hear automated announcements for the G all the time. So I believe the G is now consisting from Jamaica yard instead of Coney Island yard? This is honestly so unexpected. (Even though I'm not a G rider.)
Me too
I wonder if they’ll bring the G back to Forest Hills. Perhaps maybe send it to Jamaica Van Wyck or 179th Street during rush hours.
It's unlikely that G would return to Queens Boulevard during the weekdays at rush hour. I don't think the express tracks would be able to handle both the E and the F with an additional G. I'm pretty sure running 5 services at Queens Boulevard being hard to do is why the G was cut back to Court Square in the first place.
I’ve dreamt for so long
I think that’s kinda great

Then will Bway lines get the R211 to compensate the loss of all their NTT? They now become the dumping grounds for R46
Yes they will be getting the r211s
You make that sound like a bad thing. 🤣
All R46 and R68/A cars except for the 9 R68 cars for Franklin Avenue Shuttle service will be exclusive assigned to the B, D, N/W and Q.
@@TheRailLeaguer the r68s are assigned to the B and D too though, they aren’t exclusive to the NQW unless I misinterpreted what you said.
@@toxicrepstan1897 It was an error on my part, though I fixed it.
However it could appear that the N/W could be all R46 cars with the Q being a split operation, the B using the R68/A cars, and the Q being a mixed bag. The D would be R68 cars.
1:45 it sounds like MTA put in the same door motors as the R211s.
They've always had those door motors. They're R160B sets after all.
So you can technically automate the Culver Line fully now… I think rn the only part is a small express track with the equipment just for testing
1:18 I love the clickety clack.
Will they get rid of the R68/A munipal G train and replace it with R160/A?

I agree. Weird as it will be, I kiiiiinda like the organization going on here.
Damn now no more front-facing seats on Smith/Ninth Sts. Also, when will this be completed?
The whole swap would be finished by the end of the month.
To be fair, very little of this line is above-ground anyway. If I wanted a view I'd stand. Especially Church Ave-bound since there are few stops left. But when it matters, it'll be more comfortable to stand and move around and in/out now.
@@samuelitooooo The 75 footers are more relaxing in my opinion and give me a sense of nostalgia when riding the train around that curve.

There are no plans for G trains on Queens Blvd Line given current track constraints. Not to mention no demand. If the damn thing ran to Astoria via 31st Street it would’ve been a different Story.
