Loved this video! I especially find Tenzin’s situation interesting because he’s dealing with the pressure of parental expectation from a parent who has passed away. We aren’t made aware how much (if any) pressure Aang put on him. I think even if he was mostly relaxed, Tenzin would feel this pressure anyways by virtue of being the Avatar and the last airbender’s son who can carry out the air nation legacy. I relate a lot to Tenzin BECAUSE his father is passed on and he feels this way. My parents are both alive and wonderful people who love me dearly. But like I think Tenzin often does, I know I have inflicted pressure onto *myself* because of who my parents are. My mom is a bombshell who graduated at the top of her class, managed two jobs and drill team in high school, was popular according to her classmates (she disagrees however), and while not going to college she thrived and was very successful in the work force after graduation. As a girl who was told I was a gifted child academically but later struggled in school, I felt like my mom held internal disappointment towards me. I looked up to her as a woman and she was the benchmark in my head for what a successful woman should be. I tried really hard and wrecked my mental health as I got older with pushing myself too much to keep perfect grades academically. To be the same kind of student my mom was. But amidst feeling this way, I had a mom (and dad lol) who celebrated every time I got better at a subject I struggled in. Who celebrated with me when I passed a test, even by the skin of my teeth. Who told me my worth wasn’t tied to my grades or how many AP classes, so long as I did my absolute best. Therapy, talking to my mom, and therapy with my mom has really helped with my self inflicted feelings of shame and fear of being a failure in the eyes of the amazing people who raised me. And graduating high school was an amazing accomplishment that I got to feel proud of myself for when the day finally came! And we all celebrated the hard work I’d put in to graduating, even if it wasn’t at the top of my class :,) (I was blessed to have graduated as a “student portraying academic excellency” however!).
This kinda hurts. From a young age my dad kinda did this (consciously or unconsciously). I was his only son that was biologically his (the rest being either fosters, adoptees, or under his guardianship), and I was the youngest kid overall. They had me at a late stage in life, and it was clear I’d be the last. He always said I was going to be better than the rest (my siblings) and that I don’t [can’t] do things the others did. One of my sisters (the oldest kid) was already an adult by the time I was a toddler, and my next oldest sibling sometimes had identity issues from being adopted. My brother (under guardianship) hated being there, and refused to be adopted, because his parents had died when he was young. Add onto that, that with my dad’s job, even though he wasn’t famous, we were very open to scrutiny from our own community. He really went out of his way to mold me in his image, and, in certain ways that’s not bad, and I don’t resent him for it, but when I actually discovered myself, and it wasn’t his mirror, it felt like I had to put more time and effort into accepting that that was actually who I was Sorry for the word spaghetti
Yeah I get what you mean being in someone shadow isn't fun since it literally holds you back mentally physically and spiritually not to mention you would be consistently thinking that you're not good enough.
I’m pretty sure the spontaneous Airbenders on Season 3 is their workaround to avoid the notion of Aang or Tenzin thrusting their way around the the world.
Dude, that image... But seriously, the other explanation is that, there were survivors, they probably were in hiding and they had descendants. Which turned out to be those airbenders during harmonic convergence
@@seeleunit2000 It may be possible there were survivors but if that was the case, harmonic convergence wouldn't have been required to suddenly have more air benders. It's possible that the people who got the ability had some air nomad dna in their genepool but I think it's a stretch to think all the people who got air bending abilities were all descendants of direct survivors.
Genes spread quickly and get dilluted. There was likely a lot If Denuvo surveillance genes in the world, not just from survivors but from air nomads creating families far before the war. But it's half genetics and half spirit magic, so youcant make hard rules about it.
Damn, I suddenly thought of monk Miroku from InuYasha and the nightmare of an air nomad with his mentality 😵💫 The four nations would soon see a rise of air benders. Hope it's not the future of Milo but he has already shown some ladies skill during the last season of LoK 😨
@MalzraAirwynn it could be argued the survivors taught their kids not to bend at all and the convergence sorta sparked it to activate without being taught
I have to view it as a separate universe from ATLA because i don’t like some of the decisions made like Korea being cut off from the past lives and Aang growing up to pressure his children so much that they feel so stuck. I understand why the choices were made storytelling wise but to protect my piece, separate universe. I do like it even it with my disagreements tho.

I think of Tenzin as more of a royal heir than gifted child. He needs to do X and Y, he's apparently the one Aang spent more time with because Tenzin will become the last air bender when Aang dies.
It would be cool to see a video about how Korra learns from her enemies! This gets its big focus when she visits Zaheer in prison but I think it is a themee throughout
My mom isn't famous by any means, but she's deeply loved by her community, and for good reason! But for most of my life, it felt like people couldn't see me as an individual. I was just my mom's daughter. I realize now that it was my brain being a jerk and I was comparing myself to her. But it's still incredibly frustrating when so many people can't have a conversation with me, without bringing up my mom in some way. Being a gifted kid definitely didn’t help. I've wasted so much of my life feeling guilty for not meeting my standards. Feeling like a failure and so far behind my peers, due to circumstances beyond my control. But I'm finally at a place now where I can forgive myself and move on with my life. Sure, I can't do some things, but that doesn't mean I can't do anything! Just because it's hard doesn't mean it isn't worth it. And yes, you're never too old to learn! As long as you're alive and you're willing to do the work, you can accomplish a lot!
I personally feel like they could have done a slightly better job at informing the audience of how "bad" of parents Aang and Katara were, like maybe showing a couple of flashbacks or getting an opinion from someone who wasn't raised by them. Because, at times, they felt like worse parents than they should be, given their characterization in the show. But overall it was a narrative hook that I liked from the show.
The avatar gang was made of former children who have had to grow up quickly and under the constant pressure and stress of being executed during wartime. Of course, Al the trauma they had very certainly endured couldn’t help them become great parents knowing that how they survived all that wartime mess became good chunks of their respective identities.
Eh, i prefer it this way. You have to understand that parent-child relationships are super complicated. Just because the parent in question is an overall good person does not mean that they're incapable of certain mistakes. It's these small things that always end up affecting the children. For example, based on how Aang is as a character, we can assume that he WAS a parent who showed major love to his kids. But because he showed special treatment towards tenzin due to his status as an airbender, this caused some resentment from his other kids. Aang probably thought that it wasn't a big deal since this type of thing is something that can only be done one on one, Airbender to Airbender, plus from what we know, he was the only one to actually be interested in air nomad culture. Plus, airbending as a whole is something very near and dear to his heart, so in his mind, training the next generation is TOP priority. But still, even if that's good in a vacuum, he STILL showed special treatment to one sibling over the others. Stuff like that can be misinterpreted on their end as them believing that Aang loved Tenzin more than them. So all in all i LIKE how they did this in the show, it makes a lot of sense that it ended up this way. It REALLY shows us more about the characters and their perspecrives, rather than aang himself, since we as the audience already know how good of a person he is.
The thing about Aang his patiënts isn't because of his personality like it is in Korra. With Aang it's more because he is 12. I am a really patiënt person but as a child I also could be inpatient. That's normal for children.
I think for Tenzin, he internalized that the air nation was on his shoulders like it was on Aang's. I think there wasn't ever any question for him to have children, he just knew he needed to and to raise them as air nomads.
imagine how much pressure aang felt, trying to rebuild an entire culture which he not only lost, but involuntarily left. He sped through their customs faster than almost anyone before, the youngest master in history iirc, and then after toppling an empire, had to do the work of *relearning* the context and history of his own people in order to give tenzin the things he needed to feel connected to their shared history.
The one thing that I would add here, is that while Aang by far is the most famous, he isn’t even the only famous person in his family. Every single person in their family is insanely famous. Yes, his dad is the Avatar and is definitely the person he’s molding his identity around. His mother is Katara, is the last bender of the southern water tribe, and water bending master of the avatar. Toph, who is functionally their aunt, is the other master of his dad. His Uncle Sokka becomes the tribal leader of the Southern Water Tribe (so he’s a president), and is also a world famous war hero. I mean, everyone in his extended family is functionally (or literally in Zuko’s case) royalty. The pressure to perform is insane. His family is directly in charge of the government in least 2/5 ths of the world? And his dad is the ambassador of the entire planet. Honestly, who can blame him for having that much of a stick up his butt 😂. Poor guy
Great video but I was hoping you'd talk about what I think was a very important but kinda brushed aside point in Tenzin's backstory. He was dating Lin, his childhood friend who he was happy with but she didn't want kids and he needed them for his duty. The man pushed aside the woman he had grown up loving for his duty to the Air Bender Nation.
The Tenzin-Jinora dynamic feels like an extension of this, really. Jinora is treated as a child to be sheltered from her own power because as one of three going on four airbenders of her generation, she has that privilege. Jinora is denied formal masterhood at the age her grandfather attained it because Tenzin doesn't want her, or Ikki, Meelo or Rohan for that matter, to be under that same pressure. He wants her to be a snarky little bookworm rather than "female Aang with only airbending" because being "Aang 2.0 with only airbending" is an impossibility in his own life, and he struggles to step out of his own parental trauma to see his daughter is both ready and eager to carry the torch, and in a way the only thing standing between her and filling her grandfather's shoes is Tenzin's overprotectiveness.
What I love about LOK showing Aangs kids is that when you watch the series, you see what part of Aang and Katara the children got. Bumi got Aangs spiritual sense and sense of justice. He got Katarra's protective nature and bonus, got Soka's wild spirit in him. Kaya(sp?) Got her mothers healing and water bending talent but got Aang's sense of freedom and exploration. Always exploring herself and places. Tenzin got Aang's airbending and talent for it but also got the guilt it came with. He inherented his mothers nurturing nature and temper, but because of how much he spent with his father, probably got abit of his as well.
5:50 I think Tenzin felt less pressure to ‘repopulate’ the Air Nomad Nation once new airbenders started popping up in Book 3 as they no longer had to rely on the passing of genetics in order for someone to be born an airbender. Plus, by the time Book 4 rolls around, Rohan is 4 & isn’t shown airbending at all, so it’s implied Pema’s wish for a non-bender child came true - not to mention there’s a 5 year difference between Rohan & his older brother Meelo, so Rohan may have been a surprise baby & Pema’s 39 by the time of Book 4 & while women can possibly have babies up to age 50 or so, you tend conceive less frequently by the time you reach your early 40s or sometimes even late 30s (I myself being born to a 41 year old mother) so I doubt Pema & Tenzin will have any more children & I don’t think they want or feel the need to anyway.
Yeah, my mom had such high expectations of me being a successful artist and feeling shit that I have not lived up to it. She used to say "I know you will do great things! You are meant for it!" The job I got sucks, just going through old clothes.
Do not compare yourself to your parents, your sibling or the top of your field. Even to your peers can be dangerous as they have had a large 'head start' on you. Compare yourself to yourself. Not yesterday's or last week's, but last month or last year. Are you growing over time? It will fall from time to time. It won't be constant gains. Even if the answer is 42, we may not be asking the right questions. Life's hard, don't beat yourself up too much. Life will probably do that for you.
After hearing the gifted kid explanation I feel like I'm connected to Tenzin more now. I constantly live feeling like the moment I eff up everyone will realize I'm not as good as they thought I was.
Oooo, the gifted one I’ve been through this, it took turning 22 to realize,I am not who raised me ,I am my own person We are raised to “be like our parents” Instead of be ourselves So to any youth reading this,be YOU, You only get one chance at it 📿 and once you do you’ll open up so many doors, with your own hands and ideas.
I love Tenzin and if he didnt exist idk if id love Korra like i do, Even his presence feels a bit like having a comfort or safety around. From the design the the voice to the dialogue. Goated character.
Tenzin was always my favorite. Her didn't let hos personally out much, but it was always a treat when he did. Him getting heated at the pro bending finals, so much fun.
I've thought of a few reason why Bumi & Kya don't have kids, but that's an interesting angle. Perhaps they didn't want to because they were concerned about the pressure that would be put on their hypothetical children the same way they felt pressured to live up to Katara's & especially Aang's legacies. I disagree on Tenzin losing his patience being like Aang. Of course Aang sometimes lost his patience, but everyone does. Jeong Jeong had him doing breathing exercises for like an hour, & there was a ticking clock. Not wanting to kill Ozai was a similarly very tense situation. But I think Tenzin has more of an angry streak that's more similar to his mother. And now that I think about it, having Korra as a student may have subconsciously helped teach him some of the ways in which he's NOT like Aang, preparing for his breakthrough in the Fog of Lost Souls. That would fit into the general theme of Tenzin & Korra mutually learning from each other. I do agree on Tenzin trying to force his ideals on the airbenders in Book 3 being well-written. I think it's a good thing to point out because there's this prevalent mindset in internet media criticism that if an issue is solved in an episode, then it should be totally gone for good or the character is "regressing." I think that's a very unnatural way to write a character, & one of ATLA's strengths was to move away from that, so it's nice to see pushback against that idea. Tenzin probably was a little bit more laid back in Book 4, but the situation's also pretty different. Jinora is now a master, & it doesn't hurt that she's a bit older, but most importantly, he doesn't have any particular reason to expect the mission to be very dangerous. They're just supposed to find Korra & bring her back. It was Korra's idea to go to a brewing warzone because I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same. I don't think I ever made the connection that Tenzin & Korra are both "gifted children" struggling with expectations. When you add Tenzin's other kids, & Mako being very accomplished despite starting as an orphan, you could say that's a major theme of the series. Or at least dealing with family expectations when growing up, since Bolin feels very in Mako's shadow & Opal is kind of the "ungifted Beifong child" until she gets airbending. Though it's not really related to any of your main points, now I can't help but wonder what would've happened if Tenzin was a very different character who just went "No, I'm sorry, Dad, but rebirthing the Air Nation just isn't who I am."
What make it worse for tenzen is that he is the only known air bender besides his father at that time. So in a way, he cant really cant have that "go away" route because he is in a way have the responsibility to not let the air nation go extinct after his father died. It impact his lovelife the most.
Love I love this video. He is one of my favorite characters of all time. I love Korra so much Like this video came at a perfect time because I have this one friend who hates Korra so much but none of his arguments hold water

New Korra video coming Sunday and many more on the way. Trust me: I’m also *beyond* frustrated at how many act as if Korra is objectively worse than ATLA. I just want to enjoy my media in peace!
I am glad that LOK showed real life parent/child relationships and how that has followed them into their adulthood. It isn't pretty half the time but this is why the show felt a little more grounded than ATLA (not to say that ATLA was not good but it was GREAT TOO but in a child like fantastical dreamers way and innocence).
Oh im actually glad to see someone else who also likes Korra more than ATLA. I understand the critique and that ATLA is a better crafted series, but Korra actually speaks to me on a personal level.
Did she say anything about which series she preferred that I've forgotten? I remember her calling Tenzin "one of her favourite Avatar characters", but that doesn't inherently mean that the series he is in is her preferred one.
16:47 - it was one of the final end cards. But yes, I do enjoy Korra more (although dw I don’t hate ATLA, quite the opposite in fact)! I’d be happy to make a video about why this is the case as well! (Also I’m a dude btw but no sweat 😁)
I’m not a big LOK fan but I do respect its writing for Aang’s children. They are almost perfect in how relatable and well characterized they are. Really showing a side of parents not as common. That even if they are good people or even by normal standards good parents (ie not treating them like shit in the traditional ways like physical, emotional, and verbal abuse, they aren’t the best. And that’s realistic cause sometimes people who are most skilled aren’t good at raising kids or having their own. And it’s important to show how they feel and how they grew due to it.
I think this gifted child syndrome was something Michael Jordan's own sons experienced. Not measuring up to their father, i think it was actually a blessing to them. Considering that social media wasn't as big then as it is now
I think this video actually does a very poor job of exploring how Tenzin does feel a connection with air nomad lifestyles, and philosophies. Everything is chalked up to his relationship with his father rather than any actual connection with the air nation. Why would it only be out of obligation to Ang to keep the air nomads going? The air acolytes exist because the people of that world found the teachings and lifestyle worthwhile and their genocide threw the world out of balance.. The topic is such a good idea, but too much of his character is attributed to it.
This is a totally valid criticism! I think a lot of it can be attributed to his relationship with his father, but it certainly isn’t *all* he is. After all, that’s what he learned in Book 2: he’s his own man- and as his own man, he finds the values and culture or the air nomads fulfilling. You make an excellent point!
I actually did make a video about why Book 3 is my favorite in all of Avatar a LONG time ago. I’d be glad to revisit it (my video essays weren’t as great back then lol)
What should be said is that Tezin is lowkey a superior bender than Aang, there is absolutely no way aang could stand up to the red lotus like tenzin did. And hes a far far superior leader.
If there is a crossover where three or two generations of Team Avatar meets, will Aang and Toph feel ashamed being ashamed of becoming a terrible parent to their future children that leads to family trauma?

Oh. Talented Child Syndrome. There’s a name for it.
Yeah it's called being Asian
Gifted kid syndrome
He really went out of his way to mold me in his image, and, in certain ways that’s not bad, and I don’t resent him for it, but when I actually discovered myself, and it wasn’t his mirror, it felt like I had to put more time and effort into accepting that that was actually who I was
Sorry for the word spaghetti
I love Legend of Korra so much? Cant believe people hate this show. No its not perfect and no its not ATLA but its still AMAZING
@@laurens3857Aang didn't pressure his kids. And cutting the past lives was a good thing since it enhances Korra's character growth and adds more stakes.
@@laurens3857 valid points man personally I never really cared for season 2 especially the first avatar story but just bc i dont like it doesnt mean its bad 🤧🤧🤧 season 3 is so awesome season 4 is amazing too. I literally have a tattoo of the Earth Empire logo jajajaja
@@ThomasSHyea no one cared for season two it was shit and anyone who likes korra will tell you that but that doesn’t mean you should write off the whole show because of it like many korra haters do
**Korra
I think of Tenzin as more of a royal heir than gifted child. He needs to do X and Y, he's apparently the one Aang spent more time with because Tenzin will become the last air bender when Aang dies.
It would be cool to see a video about how Korra learns from her enemies! This gets its big focus when she visits Zaheer in prison but I think it is a themee throughout
yes, great idea!
So happy to see Tenzin discourse. This video is fire, ty very much ✨
My mom isn't famous by any means, but she's deeply loved by her community, and for good reason!
I agree I feel like he gets that from Katara but then again she was 14 when we knew her so 🤷♀️
I think for Tenzin, he internalized that the air nation was on his shoulders like it was on Aang's. I think there wasn't ever any question for him to have children, he just knew he needed to and to raise them as air nomads.
i love the way they portray korras recovery and the cptsd she develops from it. she is such an important character to me chat
imagine how much pressure aang felt, trying to rebuild an entire culture which he not only lost, but involuntarily left.
Damn it, that scene with Bumi talking to Aang’s statue never fails to make me tear up 😢
It is hard to live up to greatness.
For Aang, he didn't want to kill also as a need to uphold and keep airbending traditions and his people alive
Oooo, the gifted one
I’ve been through this, it took turning 22 to realize,I am not who raised me ,I am my own person
We are raised to “be like our parents”
Instead of be ourselves
So to any youth reading this,be YOU,
You only get one chance at it 📿 and once you do you’ll open up so many doors, with your own hands and ideas.
Tenzin's struggle is kind of a meta-commentary on LoK failing to live up to the fans' expectations set by ATLA, if you think about it.
Can you do a video on Jinora's coming-of-age journey?
Happy you're covering LOK
I love Tenzin and if he didnt exist idk if id love Korra like i do, Even his presence feels a bit like having a comfort or safety around. From the design the the voice to the dialogue. Goated character.
Really excited about this topic! ✨
I never actually noticed these. Thanks!!
Not a fan of tlok but what got me to watch it was tenzins character and story, meelo and the original gang
Tenzin wasn't gifted, he was literally the first and only Airbender in 100 years
He is genetically gifted.
Dont be silly.
Agree
Tenzin was always my favorite. Her didn't let hos personally out much, but it was always a treat when he did. Him getting heated at the pro bending finals, so much fun.
Good god, this spoke to me. This is fantastic!
Thanks for this great analysis
I love Korra so much
Like this video came at a perfect time because I have this one friend who hates Korra so much but none of his arguments hold water
Ah yes, expectations. The all-present weight in our lives. Who the hell invented them?
aang is also twelve years old...
YESS MORE KORRA CONTENT PLEASE!!!!!
Fantastic video. He is Twnzin. And that's more than enough.😊
I love Tenzin so much!!!! Him and Korra are the best❤❤❤❤❤
Tenzin can't be a hero like his late father he can be his own hero
I feel Pema was pressured into having kids on some level, too. In the very first episode she says she doesn't want another airbender in the family.
Please keep making these. I need more videos about the good things about Korra and not just endless stuff about how it's the worst thing in the world, all while Lily Orchard's image online is imploding.
New Korra video coming Sunday and many more on the way. Trust me: I’m also *beyond* frustrated at how many act as if Korra is objectively worse than ATLA. I just want to enjoy my media in peace!
@PosiTVty. Hey, as somebody who started his essay career with a She-Ra video, I say don't stop!
You know what, thinking about it… Pema was probably thrilled when the air benders suddenly came back 😂 lot of pressure off her
Ehh… I never liked Aang, but loved Tenzin. Tenzin is basically everything I wish Aang had been.
I always want to see more Korra
I am glad that LOK showed real life parent/child relationships and how that has followed them into their adulthood. It isn't pretty half the time but this is why the show felt a little more grounded than ATLA (not to say that ATLA was not good but it was GREAT TOO but in a child like fantastical dreamers way and innocence).
Thank you
friend-sounding voice
I’d love to see more of these videos!!!
@@PosiTVty. My bad.
Tenzin may be Aang's son. But he's katara son.
Oh, this video topic is awesome
Yell yell yell
I’m not a big LOK fan but I do respect its writing for Aang’s children. They are almost perfect in how relatable and well characterized they are. Really showing a side of parents not as common. That even if they are good people or even by normal standards good parents (ie not treating them like shit in the traditional ways like physical, emotional, and verbal abuse, they aren’t the best. And that’s realistic cause sometimes people who are most skilled aren’t good at raising kids or having their own. And it’s important to show how they feel and how they grew due to it.
If Aang wasn't the Avatar, which actually makes them more capable even without the Avatar State, then Tenzin would most likely be even more powerful.
Lynn and Suyin can't be heroes like Toth they need to their own heroes
Except him being an airbender is the root of his idolization of Aang.
Idk if you agree with this, but I'd like a video about why season 3 is so fucking good. I loved your analysis here!!
I actually did make a video about why Book 3 is my favorite in all of Avatar a LONG time ago. I’d be glad to revisit it (my video essays weren’t as great back then lol)
Forreal
I guess boomy kya and tenzin were raised just like their parents were 🤷 😕 😔 😐 🤔
What should be said is that Tezin is lowkey a superior bender than Aang, there is absolutely no way aang could stand up to the red lotus like tenzin did. And hes a far far superior leader.
🧭
🌻
Tenzin is the best written character in Korra imo
More Korra
Really? I just wanted to see Tenzin do things other than scold.
The family's over looked at how lucky they were lucky 😍
i'm not a big fan of LOK, but one of the things they did well was tenzin's family.
Tenzin is a hater
Aang was not a good father
Yes he was. He was just flawed.
If there is a crossover where three or two generations of Team Avatar meets, will Aang and Toph feel ashamed being ashamed of becoming a terrible parent to their future children that leads to family trauma?
🗑
calling children gifted is abuse
No it isn't.
