This is so very hard to go, so very hard to know, that Rick passed last year. I was one of Rick's correctional officers at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, CA in Amador County. I knew Rick there from about 1995 til 2008 when I retired, about 13 YEARS. He was in B-Yard Gym in a bunkbed serving life for two murders from a drug deal gone bad in the 70's, during the time I knew him. I was one of his officers in B-Gym. I got to know Rick fairly well over those years. I would 'try' to blurt out to him face-to-face, singing the first few lines of You're Still A Young Man and Bump City.....He would chuckle at me and say, "You've got it, Kam, you've really got it!" Such a crying shame that after 37 years in prison, that he was paroled (pardoned) and barely spent five (5) years as a free Christian man, when his past of hard drugs and hepatitis took him to sing with our Lord and Savior. Sing loud, Rick, so we all can hear you from up there. You ARE still a young man !!! Rest in peace, ol inmate friend of mine, rest in peace !!!
He was a mentor to me and if I ever had gotten caught for all my wrongdoings or Law Violations I would have been in the cell right next to Mr.Stevenson.. He was then and now still here in spirit.

This song is what started my road with being a lifetime fan of Tower of Power. This one and What is Hip. I've heard many singers with TOP sing their versions, but Rick Stevens forever owns this song. I worked the prison dept. where he was incarcerated. Policy was to not interact at a personal level with inmates. Being a true Tower of Power fan, it was difficult to see him as an inmate. So never had one to one talks with him. Only regret is I wish I would've gotten his autograph.
God is amazing. Rick came full circle and humbly gave God the glory. He is my favorite TOP singer and nobody could ever sing You're still a young man like he did. Pure Style and Class.
Glad that he made it out, had the opportunity to reconnect with TOP. MY favorite lead singer for TOP. ALSO happy he got 5+ yrs. with his family & didn’t have to die behind prison walls. RIP / RICK / WILLY /CA 🌹. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES 🌹

Rick....I really wish life had been better for you...you deserved so much more...I lived a musical life w/you and am about to cry right now seeing this performance w/TOP....most people don’t remember nor acknowledge your time w/Brass Horizon after TOP but I had first hand knowledge of the man you really were...so loving to your son and beautiful woman - a powerhouse on-stage giving it all you had playing 5 nights a week and never complained. My mom loved - you gave my parents they respect they deserved when you lived at our home in SF. It’s been way too long for me but I find myself appreciating you more now than ever before . Thank you God for bringing Rick back to the ones who truly loved him for who he really was...I can’t look in the rear view mirror and say that I supported you while you were away and for that I must always with... I guess life does just gets in the way for all of us...RIP my brother

Mr. Rick Stevens is one of my favorite lead singers in TOP. When I hear him sing that song it reminds me of a lady a couple of years older than me that I wanted to date. But she told me I can introduce you to my younger sister (that broke my little heart) LOL. Mic Gillette's intro on the trumpet is awesome, tower horns just blowing you away, Rick Stevens powerful voice, the lyrics in that song, the rhythm section, It is just an exceptionally beautiful love song. The incredible dramatic ending of this song with the horns and Rick Steven is Outstanding!! RIP Rick Steven you are the best God bless.
Thank you pastor. I was a young musician when I was influenced by Tower of Power and was heartbroken when I heard of the trouble Rick was in. After I came to know Christ I prayed for him regularly. I rejoiced when he was released and was touched by his testimony. Look forward to seeing him on the other side!

Just now learned Rick went home and I was very Blessed to see Rick sing at the Sonoma Plaza during the annual Sonoma Vintage Festival ... I think Rick had just been released from prison finally and he was playing with the band called Cold Blood? The lady who was the original singer in that band named Maria I think had him as a special surprise guest ... I was a block away from the Sonoma Plaza on Broadway st. and I could hear the music as I was getting closer and all of a sudden the band starts to play Your still a Young Man .... Immediately, I was said to myself, that's Rick Stevens!!! I couldn't see him but I said to my daughter, "Thats the original dude who sang this song!!!" Finally got to the outside edge of the crowd snd there he was up on stage ... Full of energy, smiling and happy and giving off this profound positivity that I cannot describe ... He finished that set snd bounced over to the edge nearby and I walked up to Rick and just smiled .... He stood there and smiled back at me and though he didn't know me he just reached out and gave me a hug! It was like I knew the man forever ... All I could say was "Its so good to have you home again Rick .... " One of a handful of memories I have where I knew with all certainty I was in the presence of someone whom Thee Most High was with us both at that moment .... Raspy Rick it is & was, we kept in touch throughout the tailend of his jail stint. A real nice Towerman,but didn't know he was Age number 7Up.- " Let's Have Faith In America".
He was blessed to be paroled considering he was sentenced to two life terms for 1st degree murder and one count of manslaughter. Glad to see he found God and got the chance to be free again!
I remember Rick coming to my house in a limo. The driver came in and sat a while and we all talked. Rick was trying to hook up the driver with my roommate. What in the hell was all of that about? I didn't ask any questions! Lol!
