. A seaplane add-on rating is something I've always wanted as a pilot and aviator. As an Alaska resident, it seems only appropriate to do this fun kind of flying. Besides, access to the backcountry of Alaska is particularly unique. Floatplanes can be a challenge, though, and shouldn't be taken lightly.
I decided to go with Alaska Floats and Skis in Talkeetna, Alaska. They're well known for quality seaplane training. Sarah is a flight instructor there, and ended up being a fantastic teacher. I've met her before, when she did the training for Josh Flowers at Aviation101. I helped them film that flight, and have seen her a handful of times since.
Seaplanes are just different all around. Flying on the water, with the takeoffs, landings and taxi, is just different. It's not entirely foreign to a pilot, but it takes time to learn to fly on floats.
In this lesson we ended up working on seaplane landings and taking off, in addition to a bunch of other unique aspects of floatplanes. It's a fun and new mental challenge as a flight instructor and CFI. We also ended up doing step turns, step taxi, plow taxi, and glassy water takeoffs and landings in the Piper Pacer PA20.
This is real bush flying in Alaska. It's challenging, it's fun, and it's different. Of course the Alaska scenery is just something else!

Those takeoffs thru the trees were spectacular views. So much fun and listening to two experienced Aviators, especially one instructor learning from the other was like double the learning through the conversation. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole wide world. Thank You for sharing your seaplane dual time with us. I'd like to fly anything and everything so time in the water on floats flying...absolutely!

That pesky water rudder pull up! My left hand developed more muscle in that one week I was in Alaska training floats than they ever did before. Everything about floats is fun. That evaluation process exploring a new lake and then being able to land there when no one else is around is so satisfying. Glassy water landings were my most favorite though.

She a different beast than your plane.. Sarah is an outstanding instructor. I saw her with Josh, from Aviation 101. She had to correct him too, so don't feel bad. You got much deeper into it than Josh. I think you did great for your first time out. You need to get your rating.

So much going on in flying and so many distractions and tower traffic radio going on. Plus invisible things trying to kill you such as air density, down drafts, head winds, low fuel ect. Amazing more people aren't killed flying such a boating accidents at boat launch. Much respect for aviators everywhere. Enjoyed watching this.

So being on step basically = getting a boat up on plane?
I can definitely see that would take a long time to put everything together, & form that muscle memory!
Makes me wonder, if one found themselves on a smaller take, if one could actually take off while turning on step in a pinch.
