Btw the rivalry is between France and England, in France we love Ireland, Scotland and Wales there is no animosity from us toward them. (Well to be fair there is no animosity toward England nowadays its mostly "frienemy" teasing) Cheers
I agree. As a Scotsman, I am well aware of the Auld Alliance (Vieille Alliance). The Anglo-French Wars were specifically between them and England. Us Scots _teamed up_ with the French for hundreds of years so I don't think we can be included in any "rivalry". We even provided personal protection for the French monarchy with _La Garde Écossaise._

Chinese opinion of Japan is mostly based on World War 2. There are still many higher ups that deny anything eve happened. Kin Wa Li True, but I still have a small hatred to americans for what they did to the brother of my great grandfather, When us forces broke trough the defense at Omaha, Normandy they captured my great grandfather and his brother because their group ditched them. And they just shot his brother like it was nothing and starting to joke about it. But then again Germans didn’t do the best things as well so I can’t blame America, and the reason no country actually gets along is you never know who to trust. WW1 and WW2 technically both happened because a Prince from Austria-Hungary got assassinated by a Serbian man. And that’s literally the reason.
Finland and Sweden got big frenemy relationship. Especially in Finland, as long as we do it better than Sweden we have succeeded.

As a Frenchman, I can tell you the English-French rivalry is by far the most important and deep rooted in History. I could say the History of France but easily say the History of Europe too. We were at war for nearly 8 centuries... but because of this, we have more in common than most people would think. We are both imperialists, arrogant and proud of our own cultures and history, because this rivalry brought the best of ourselves to overcome the other.
Today, this rivalry is mostly seen in football and rugby, but otherwise it has cooled down a lot on the political and military levels. We are allies for sure, and maybe even friends :)
The French German rivalry was intense and brought two world wars, but it was on a short time, from Napoléon to WW2. Before, the French did not see the German as great enemies and after ww2, the european projects brought friendship, and today most French have no particular feelings against Germany.

As an Englishman learning about the history of England and France, I was very impressed about how committed the French were to screwing over the English. Funding the rebellion of the original 13 colonies to the point that it would trigger massive political and cultural upheavals back home… that’s impressive.
It’s also strange that the USA has a sometimes difficult relationship with France. If it weren’t for their funding (and the Louisiana purchase). USA wouldn’t be what it is today.

Buss Japan has had been more peaceful, unified and with less famine and war than China has had in the last 100 years and still has a higher per capita gdp and higher standard of living so show me your data that backs up China being more advanced ??????
Japan ain't doing better then China now though
@@danielkelly1335 No that's just wrong. China has been united mostly. If you do the math China was united for 1630 years out of its 2132 years of imperial history. And that's not even including the Jin (sometimes combined into the Northern and Southern Dynasty period) and Yuan (Mongols were beyond just China, and fractured quickly) dynasties
As for Japan, it was a collection of small states that didn't unite until the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603. It was very scattered and separated prior to that. In Japan today it is Oda Nobunaga who is celebrated as the father of united Japan. Not Yoshitsune.
Japan has only been more advanced than China after the Boshin War concluded in 1869, when Japan rapidly industrialized. Prior to that it has always been China. A tiny island nation with a small population and few natural resources could not compare to the large, diverse, expansive Chinese empires. Why do you think it is Japanese culture that is heavily influenced by the Han Chinese, and not the other way around?
Canada’s whole national identity is based on being different from the United States. Even Canada day was created because the Americans who lived in the British-American joint ruled Oregon territory before they drew the border would celebrate the Independence Day and their Canadian neighbors were upset/jealous so they created their own holiday that eventually became Canada day, just to rub it in the Americans’ faces.

Can't believe you didn't mention Denmark (and therefore by extension Norway) and Sweden.
Denmark and Sweden have had more wars with each-other then England and France have.
And well, most of those wars included Norway in some way or other.
Often Norway was a part of Denmark-Norway in a personal union (same king).
Other times the wars where fought on Norwegian ground or there was proxy wars here as a part of their rivalry...
And so one and so forth...
Yeah but let’s be honest which pair are more significant on a global scale
OK. I'm lost lol
@@ala0284 It's a worth record.
That's worth mentioning in itself.
No other pair of countries in the world has had as many wars as Denmark and Sweden (at least not using that definition of war) yet today the region is among the most peaceful in the world with everyone being on good terms with each other except for the occasional joke and some sports competition.
The world can learn from this.
If nothing else it means that there's hope even for the worst of diplomatic relationships.
Also, regarding world power.
Sweden was considered a greater power then Russia for quite a bit of this time.
And Denmark had a big enough navy and merchant fleet that England thought they had to deal with them when their intelligence services found out that Napoleon (and therefore) France had plans to force Denmark-Norway into the war on their side.

Funny note about Argentina and Chile.
For both of them, the other is the only neighbour they have never went to war with.

Im a German who did go to school in England for a while when i was younger and from my experience there is nothing more bias on how they teach English history, especially when it comes to their eternal rival France.
My favorite is the hundred years war. They like to talk about Agincourt all day but ignore pretty much everything what happend after. They also build up this narrative that it was „England vs France“ which is more wrong then true. The hundred years war was a conflict between the French kings of the Angevin empire vs the French kings of the kingdom of France. Most people fall into this trap thinking it was a conflict between "England and France" when it really wasnt. We are not talking about a nation annexing another like Germany annexing Poland in WW2. This was the ruler of the Angevin empire whos also happend to be the king of England, as head of the French house Plantagenet pressing a claim on the French crown. Funny enough, lets say Edward secured it completely and set upon the French throne. He was also the head of the main Valois line through his mother Isabella. Once he was on the throne its most likely he would have made France his primary title, as it was the larger and more prestigious one. Something like an English kingdom de facto didnt even exist. Like i mentioned, it was called the Angevin empire and the Angevin empire doesnt really fit into modern perception of what „England“ is. The Angevin kings tended to be French dukes of Aquitaine and Normandy first, being also the king of England was „nice to have“. Not to mention they all spoke French.
The English have an identity VERY centered around their island.
The idea that medieval England (post William) was focused on the continent is alien to them.
And to be fair, in France we also have a romanced way of learning about the 100 years war (less than what you're describing though.)
The 100 year war brought about the true national identities of the two countries. Nationalism did not exist to the same extent as the modern era and these wars embedded into the psyche of the two countries. The beginning of modern countries.
You know more history about my own country than I do. Maybe that’s because I went to school in New Zealand and they just teach us the same couple hundred year history every year. I wish they taught us world history instead of teaching me about the treaty of Waitangi every year!

I don't really agree with Germany and France, as that rivalry has been really short (Napoleon -> WW2). Before that, there wasn't exactly a Germany, even less a nation that really could compare with France.
I'm a Brit, but France has better food, a better climate, better scenery.
France is surrounded by the Mediterranean, Mediterranean cultures could be considered to have the best scenery and food due to their climates. A warmer climate resulted in nations like France developing a more exciting food culture, while Northern European nations could not due to chilly climates. I don't think most Germans would really consider Poland as a rival,
At most be annoyed at the occasional polish "you live in the same country as the nazis so you are Nazis" comment which isn't really a rivalry but more some politicians trying to weaponize one of the most horrific events in recent history to push their agenda of hate which would be quite ironic if it wasn't so dangerous. I mean there are of course stereotypes but not really anything on a Nationwide scale, it's mostly just a country with some nice nature, cheap superhuman workers and where anything ever stolen ends up.
Although to be fair I do live in the western part of Germany so there might be some more local rivalries going on, but not really anything on a Nationwide scale like England.
Ok, lemme say some more rivalries: Greece was once the Byzantine Empire which was really big and maybe wants that territory back, but Bulgaria once had an empire which would own half the balkans so Romania, Serbia and Greece dont like Bulgaria, Serbia also hates Kosovo and Bosnia, meanwhile Hungary isnt in the Balkans but still pissed about Trianon, Greece doesnt want Macedonia joining anything and Serbia also thinks that Macedonia and Kosovo should be theirs but Bulgaria also wants Macedonia, and Croatia once owned Bosnia and so did the Hungarian King while in a Personal Union with Croatia
Thats the Balkans for you
EnderKiller 62 come on its far more complicated that, don’t even try explaining the savage land of the balkans- also you didn’t mention that Greece also wants a chunk of turkey and vice versa, Romania wants Dobruja back, Hungary is still bitter over Transylvania, Moldova used to be part of Romania, Greece also kind of hates Albania, the Croats hate the Bosnians and the Bosnians hate the Serbians and the Serbians hate everyone around them the Serbians are rivals with Albania and Slovenia is pretending it’s not part of the balkans

@@kerryxu119 First of all, what do you mean by "hate"? The goverments or the people? Specifically speaking about Serbia here, "Serbians hate everyone around them" that is not true, Serbs have great relations with their brothers in Montenegro and very friendly relations with Romanians, also they have mutually respectful relations with Hungarians (which mind you, are big minority in the North and they are treated like everyone else), with Bulgaria they don't have any real problem (in modern times) and relations are genuinely good with Macedonians if you don't bring up Greece lol, also relations with Bosnia and Croatia aren't as bad anymore, only real bad relations Serbs have with their neighbours, are with Albanians.

Ukraine has a lot of Rivalries
Russia (obviously)
Hungary (minority/language issues)
Romanian (territory)
But i think that Ukraines main rival is poland
For the most part its not very serious, more just a friendly rivalry
But historically the two nations and people have butted heads and today there are some issues over certain events that occured in ww2
as a Pole I can understand the Ukrainians, as I go back to 1933 and the starvation of milions in Ukraine, and it was obvious that poland has been buying cheap stolen from ukrainians people food. Poles knew whats going on that time in Ukraine, and didnt have any moral breaks to buy tons of their grain etc. History is crazy, first of all we shouldnt judge anyone from that time, because we dont understand those times and never will. Ukrainians were treated like shit by soviets, they had no other option than to join the germany during ww2... important is to seek the peace today.
You missed the one that's closest to you. Ireland and the UK. Alright to an extent on paper but there is still bad blood.
I would like to correct that China was doing much better than japan since the ancient times til the beginning of the meiji restoration of japan, both economically and technologically, in fact during the ancient times for example China’s Tang Dynasty japan would often send scholars and diplomats to china to learn their knowledge and cultures, that’s why their cultures are so similar. But of cause after meiji restoration japan brought more advanced foreign technology making their military and economy more advanced (I wouldn’t say stronger since China ultimately still has the numbers and land) Edit: before japan had meiji restoration japan don’t even have their own standing army yet, they’re still using the feudal system where lords each have their own troops, while china has had a standing army since about 2000 years ago. Just showing how much more ahead china was

Well Japan invaded china. In the early 1900 they murdered most lots of chines in a genocide. Japan and the US are close allies from being invaded by them, the US and China arn't. Also, there is the small thing that china has for almost all history been the most powerful country on earth, It didn't just leapfrog Japan, Japan is still richer per capita through.
Yes per capita japan is still ahead but the fact that china went from a country that has an economy smaller than canada to an economy that is closer to US and japan’s economy today is still the same as in the 1990’s.
I wouldn’t say Japan is doing better than China nowadays besides human rights and HDI china is still far behind

Wow, he is so wrong on so many perspectives on the commentary of Japan and China's relationship I am honestly repulsed. Did this person even do proper research on why the Chinese hate the Japanese so much? Furthermore, Japan has not been richer than China for most of its history, rather Japan was fragmented by a group of feudal lords until the 1800s till the Meiji restoration. He has little to no idea of what history is and it seems like you have some kind of Island people "superiority" belief.
