Wonderful gun. There's film of them being manufactured by Chrysler during the war. I heard somewhere that when the Air Force decided to mount Bofors guns on AC-130 gunships they had a hard time finding guns and spare parts. Odd, considering how many were produced. They wound up salvaging guns from M42 Dusters which were being used as live fire targets on an aircraft gunnery range.

1 thing I always wondered is. This thing was up for sale in 1931. Almost everyone had it during ww2 but they only decided to add it to tank over a generation after the war. This with ap rounds that could be scary vs 80% of the tanks used in ww2 head-on. According to what I heard they had ap rounds and it could punch in around 50mm of armor which is basically everything the Germans had when invading France. Not to mention how effective distance fuse rounds would be vs infantry behind cover.

Leveling the gun is important as because the gun will dip quite quickly towards the lower end if nobody is serving the gun. Can be quite the safety hazard as the barrel will swing quite quickly under its own weight. You can also use this to your advantage for leveling as you can swing the barrel to see where it dips to ensure it is leveled correctly.

Bufords are still in use. AC 130 gunships have one on board. I hear them from my house at night, Elgin Air Force base Florida.

Yup. Sergeant Andersson (aka yours truly) worked on an updated version of this one, with electric servo pointing system. And yes, fine for aircraft, and an APC is just another aircraft at zero elevation. Ka-BOOM. Four shells per second. BOOM BOOM BOOM bOOM.

7:11 In the background you can see a B-17 Flying Fortress disguised as a truck. A very rare model that was used slightly during operation Barbarossa where it failed to take off.

I have been shooting these cannons in the early 80ts (danish airforce) They were in reserve, but we were trained to use them just before we ended our conscription. normaly we used L70.

This really is an iconic gun from WW2. The US even built motorized mounts, usually on tank chassis. One such, the M19, was built on the chassis of the M24 light tank and was not developed in time for WW2 but was used for ground fire in Korea. The M42 used on the chassis of the M41 light tank and was used for ground fire in Viet Nam. In that conflict iit was usually nicknamed "Duster". After Viet Nam the Army was in the process of discarding the Dusters when somebody realized that 1) the attack helicopter had become a real danger on the battlefield and 2) we no longer had mid-range AA weapons that would destroy or deter an attack helicopter. The remaining M42s in the National Guard received a short lease on life, but finally retired. Bottom line is that the original Bofors design stayed in US service until the early 1980s!

I used to clean and be sure for their good condition and operation, of 4 separate same weapon systems ,when i served in the Greek army to an antiaircraft artillery unit ( we used them mainly against landing crafts, helicopters and ground targets ,we knew very well that this gun is not very capable against F-16 or F-4) , we had some 6- pounders too ( against landing crafts and ground targets mainly)!
I knew this gun ,like the palm of my hand ,when i was in service , but since 2004 Greek army ,send all those BOFORS and 6-POUNDERS for scrap and i believe that it was a very wise decision ,because all these guns needs a lot of crew and there are a lot of better and far more modern guns ,that need much less soldiers to operate and can easily bring far better results, that all those outdated weapons!
ANYWAY ,IT WAS A GOOD AND RELIABLE WEAPON SYSTEM ,BUT AFTER 1980s THEY BECAME TOTALLY OBSOLETE .....THEY WERE ONLY CAPABLE AGAINST LANDING CRAFTS ,SLOW MOVING PLANES AND GROUND TARGETS (ALMOST ANY TYPE OF GROUND TARGET WAS A POTENTIAL TARGET ,EXCEPT MBT TANKS).....THE MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT THEY NEED A LOT OF CREW MEMBERS AND THEY ARE NOT SELF PROPELLED ,WHICH ARE GREAT DISADVANTAGES TO A MODERN BATTLEFIELD !!

I once knew a woman who worked for Curtice in Buffalo during WW2. She told me that Curtice worked closely with the British to make sure they were all using the same measurements whether it was metric, Wentworth or the American SAE standards. The British had already reduced the number of parts in the Bofos 40mm as well as eliminating some precision metal turnings with cast pieces. American manufacturers reduced the number even further and developed some of the mass production techniques. The result: an American made part would fit a British plane or vehicle.

Surely at some point somebody must have mentioned that it is silly to give so many things the same name?
