I always thought he combined the elegance of Astaire with the athleticism of Gene Kelly, and danced better than either one of them. He was an acrobat, gymnast, tap dancer, ice skater, and had ballet training...and it all showed in his dancing. I don't think I've ever seen a more graceful person. He could also sing (Although his voice was dubbed in this Lullaby of Broadway, he did his own singing in a number of other films.) and was an excellent actor. You can have Astaire and Kelly. I'll take Gene Nelson any day.
Absolutely, Anea! I have been saying this for years. There is a marked difference in Gene Nelson's dancing to the two 'greats' Astaire and Kelly. Both A & K were marvellous dancers but I always feel there is 'effort' behind everything they do. Just watch Gene Nelson and everything is effortless and natural as if the dancing is coming from him instantaneously without thought or contrivance. His natural acrobatic and balletic talents shine through. I agree with you....the word is 'graceful'! Thank you for giving me the chance to highlight this, sometimes under-rated, artiste.

When you watch Nelson, however, you look for the "wire", because he's so light on his feet and effortless that you think he's somehow being levitated...but of course he's not. He was just so effortless and natural, as you say, that it all looked so easy. I don't think I've ever seen a more natural athlete or dancer, and when you come right down to it, dancers ARE athletes. Great musical movie from the 50's with talented actors. Doris singing and dancing, Gene with his great taps, and the supporting actors S.Z Sakal and Florence Bates bringing in the comedy.
Me, too, MGE. I was definitely born about 30 years too late ..... The first film of Doris's I saw was 'LULLABY OF BROADWAY' when I was about eleven years old. I fell in love with her (like thousands of other young guys) right away! I have followed her career avidly ever since. She was a lovely person besides being a great talent. One of my favourite films of hers is 'LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME' withJames Cagney,. Her fabulous singing and great acting are unforgettable! In an earlier era, ALICE FAYE IS MY FAVOURITE ......very like Doris I think! Thanks for your comment.

After reading some regrettable comments about Doris Day, I feel I must share this anecdote: She gave an interview on NPR with Weekend Edition host Scott Simon back in 2011. At one point he mentioned the famous quote by Oscar Levant, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin." Doris Day laughed and Scott Simon asked her if she had a comment about Mr. Levant, and she said, "I always thought Oscar was really funny!" I thought at the time, "Now THAT is class!"
Maybe, if she's human....But I bet she prefers her life now to the alternative if she didn't have it. Gene Nelson is gone from this world. She is still here.

Though he was a fantastic dancer with a range that comprised ballet, gymnastics, tap and soft-shoe, he was modest enough to tell a reporter that his favorite male dancer was Tommy Rall. Doris Day, once considered Hollywood Royalty, was a fantastic actor [even in dramatic roles], dancer and, above all, singer. My one grouse against Doris is that her hairdo in the early Warner Bros. flicks was very unbecoming, bordering on the ridiculous. That silly page-boy hairdo may have been in fashion at that time, but it clearly didn't suit her. See how pretty she looked in her debut "Romance on the high seas' and My dream is yours when she wore her hair shoulder length or piled high. Nevertheless, she is one hell of an actress who is dearly loved even today.
If I had never seen the version in Gold Diggers of 1935, I'd probably think that this was okay, but the version in that film captures the true spirit of the song. All of the musical numbers in that movie are great, though the film itself is mediocre.
All this Hollywood and Broadway glamour is VERY appealing. But unfortunately it is a short-lived escape from the realities of life; which could lead any individual down the wrong path. The things we should appreciate are the things that made America strong: hard work, thrift, perseverance, and faith.
Whilst I can see what you are saying here, Clarence, I cannot agree. All this glamour you speak of, and that these films portray, is not meant to be an escape from 'real 'life' but entertainment.If all life consisted of work we would be living in a dull world. Often, music lifts the spirit and oils the wheels making the hard graft easier. I have loved these musicals from a very young age ..... Lullaby of Broadway was the first I saw t the cinema. I was 11 years old. it certainly hasn't sent me down my wrong path. it has just made life cheerful.

She isn't a soprano but more like a mezzo-soprano. This is speeded up (I think) so it is higher, so she sounds more like a soprano here...
