The boarder constraints are just a product of the woodblock printing process - its just typical of the historic versions of this deck we have access to. Its hard to perfectly align things when woodblock printing so you often see cards off center like that or the engraver simply didnt not center their composition as each of these images were hand carved onto a block of wood. Its that handmade touch! :)
Oh, I’m so excited to be watching this! I saw this beauty on Kickstarter and thought it looked lovely, and it looks even better being handled. ✨ (Also, I’m watching this with my partner and when we saw La Papesse he said “Like Lisa! La Papez!” 😂)
I have read a very interesting fact about the Latin numbering written that way in "The way of tarot" by Alexander Jodorowsky and Marianne Costa. It's not just another way of writing, rather than a very concious choice. Writing four like IV means five minus one, it's like implementing that this number preceeds five. Instead, by writing four like IIII means that it succeeds three and it gives a feeling of moving forward. (That of course applies to every number, eg VIIII instead of IX etc)
I don't really resonate with classic type Marseille decks (the art isn't something I enjoy) but for some reason this one really excited me and I backed it. I think the colors are sublime and I love the linen card stock!!
