One of the popular things to do with these to keep them mostly stock looking, but race ready was to get the 302 model, but put the crankshaft of the 289 in it. Then, to gain back some of the loss, they'd increase the cam size and lope separation angle, then use ported and polished 351 heads with a larger carb. They would scream over 7,500 rpm.
