I started British as my 3rd nation and I was surprised how good and fun their 1st and 2nd rank is. Especially the 1st, they don’t have a single bad vehicle there. Regarding solid shot, it very much depends on the actual cannon and specific solid shot ammunition used. Some solid shot configurations are pretty much identical to aphe and others are really underwhelming, primary example of bad one would be churchill mk7 with the 76mm. Primary example of good one would be Achilles with the 17pounder.
Yeah, the Mark VII (7) Churchill’s *75* is basically an American 75 copy but with a little more muzzle energy and only solid shot, because ofc Britain, ofc it is. The main focus on the Churchill isn’t the gun and instead the practical invincibility when angled against literally everything you face. The mantlet 152(0.98x) + track 20(0.75x) ≈ 164 mm, not accounting for angling. Even the Tiger 1 with Pzgr 39 has trouble going through, not to mention the actual good and mainly used shell the Pzgr. which has lesser pen for more filler, Ofc the Panther would have almost no trouble deleting that but the Churchill’s armor is insane for a 4.7 vehicle. Yes the argument of the low mobility and low damage+penetration can be made but i disagree in the use of the Cannon. See from the Jumbo 75, the gun doesn’t have much pen for things like Panther or Tiger *BUT* having a quick reload, good enough damage, it can remove gun barrels and tracks in mere seconds. I suggest doing the same for the Churchill and your more heavily armed Sherman Fireflies may assist you in the kill.
@@inkycat7167 I understand the value of churchills armor, in fact I used it to complete something like 30x Adamant BP challenge, but I found the gun to be so inadequate in terms of both pen and post pen damage, that I always have it in my head as primary example of solid shot meme. But I didn't have churchill in mind specificaly, that gun, which is also used on Valentine and Cromwell felt equally as bad on the other two, regardless of completely different BR.
plus that thing (and the AMX M4 aswell) got buffed a whole lot a couple of updates ago with the pen increasing by a good chunck and remaining at the same br.
I've grown to quite enjoy playing the Brits, after finishing 7.7, the British have became pretty damn good with the full stabs and APDS, it just takes ages to get used to
As someone who’s played Germany, Russia, and Britain at Rank 3, Solid Shot is completely passable. You just need to play it like it’s solid shot, and not APHE. If you play it like it’s APHE, that’s when it becomes a problem.
The way solid shot calculates spalling is dependent on how much pen the round has left after pending the armour for example if you have 90mm of pen and shoot an 80mm plate you get little to no spall but if you shoot a 40mm plate, you will make a ton of spall This is the whole reason why some solid shots are amazing but some are crap and unreliable
It felt nice to have the Avenger and the Firefly against the KVs after using the pathetic 75mm against them and doing absolutely nothing then the struggle to stock grind the meteor and challenger......
played both some britain and france and it was pretty good tbh, the extra pen on solid shot is pretty nice, the one issue ive had is like KVs when side on dont have enough space for the cone to spread out to do significant damage
Personally i had bad experience with solid shot only on most smaller cannons, cause i enjoy overkill cannons, even aphe on smaller cannons wont work for me cause i dont usually enjoy them, using the US T34 made me see solid shot as powerfull and mostly consistent, i just dont like needing a second shot when one should be enough
Experienced Brit player here. If you want the best way to play mid tier with solid shot... just play France xd at 5.0 they get solid shot with 200+ pen and a Sherman (fl10) with a 5 second autoloader. Yes you lose your low speed stabiliser but practly everything you point at get obliterated.
solid shot is alright. french and british vehicles get some solid APCBC on most of their tanks that do plenty of damage and just require a bit more aiming. french vehicles are especially strong in this regard because they usually have autoloaders, so you can deal followup shots if your first one isn't a kill. uncapped AP is just straight up unusable GARBAGE. it SUCKS. there's no redemption for it, it's a completely useless slug that you only use because it's a stock shell. APCR is pretty much the same. you'll very rarely ever use it because you'd be better off just flanking or disengaging from whatever you can't pen with your main shell frontally. and if APCR is your main shell as a stock round? im sorry for you. APDS is alright. some guns seem more consistent than others, like the 105 on the centurions. APCBC, APC and APDS are alright. you can get one shots, but they do require more careful aim. sometimes you do genuinely just get gaijined in a a way no amount of aiming would fix. ever shot a guys ammo point blank and turned it red? or better yet, turn the ammo black and he doesn't explode? yeah.. happens a lot more to solid shot than APHE imo.

Solid shot isn't bad, but when I played this BR i hated the reverse speed, Challenger, comet, Cromwell, it was absolutely miserable.

if he's playing britain instead of doing the grind again he could go with the firefly, pretty similar, not as good but not half bad with 190 mm of pen
