The automatic subtitling regularly transcribes "I'm Tom" as "I'm job" This time it fused "I'm Matt and I'm Tom" in "I'm an alarm job" and it got me giggling like an idiot
Am over 30 as well. I only have a Facebook acct so that some of the folks who don't have the attention span for email can send attachments or links back and forth with me. I'm not the following type and I certainly don't expect any followers of my own.
I'm liking how normal this podcast has become. It started off with "WELP HERE'S A THING HOPE SOMEBODY LIKES IT" to "Maybe we'll continue" to "Here's the new podcast!" wait why am I calling this a podcast it's clearly not a podcast WHATEVER
I am so happy that my teen years were pre-internet. By the time the internet became publicly available (i.e. not just academics) in the mid 90s I was in college, and while still something of an idiot then, I wasn't teenager stupid.
As far as I can see, snapcodes work in a similar way to ShotCodes or indirect QRCodes. They can be less complex (or more error correction) than QRCodes as they don't need to encode a full URI. Just look up the ID (which can change) and get the reference to the real account/object/URI. Perfect for a closed system like SnapChat, less useful in a wider world scenario like ShotCodes tried and Microsoft Tag failed at.
Snapchat has been my favourite social media since it came out, but I almost exclusively send direct snaps and don't use "my story". The problem is that it takes me about three minutes every time I send a snap to go through my contact list and select the people to send it to. I wish I could create groups or lists of friends so I could quickly send snaps to the usual people.
Tom getting into Snapchat all these years ago is fine. As long as he doesn’t say he’s getting into TikTok. I feel like TikTok is the worst parts of every social media app but dialed up to the max.
***** thank you, I was looking for a word to give as an example but I couldn't come up with anything. But, on the other hand, I've heard that word misspronounced many, many times, so although it's a good effort, I still would like something better. Thank you again.
I still don't understand what snapchat is ... And stop with the bogus "snapchat vs twitter vs other social media" nonsense ... they all do fundamentally different things.
This coming from the person who doesn't understand what snapchat is? :D. I do agree though. They all serve a purpose I guess. I tend to use all of them.
Came across an Insta story that mentioned Northaw and I'm like "Why have I heard of Northaw? Small place, nothing has happened there." Took me a solid ten minutes to remember this video (and the others filmed here)
As someone who doesn't use social media, it's really bizarre to hear you guys talking about wanting to use platforms like Twitter when you don't want it broadcast to the world. Why does a public service need to cater to that sort of use when there are so many services actually meant for it?
3 years later here you go northaw is the village name, Matt was suggesting the origin of its name was a portmanteau of north and thaw. Thaw meaning to defrost essentially. So Southern people would come north to thaw.
Agree with Mr Finley. I think Reddit's single username policy counts as Federation. At least the Wikipedia page on "Federated identity" certainly seems to agree with that.
I don't understand Snapchat to be honest. My college friends use it to chat, yet the messages only last for 10 seconds, and that confuses me. I use Facebook and Twitter, yet Snapchat is a step too far for me.
I am 19, I guess the 'target age' and I've never touched Snapchat. I have it installed on my phone because I thought I should but have never opened it. It doesn't sound interesting for me, I'm not part of the selfie craze so it doesn't appeal to me. Now I feel out of touch.
Exactly the same here. Maybe except that I am 18. And there is one more reason why I never opened it - because I don't use cellular internet. So I could only use it when on Wi-Fi (home and school), which feels like not a lot.
Here I was, as an American, happily thinking that I knew the definition of bellend...only to find out when I looked it up that it is not, in fact, about any part of an actual bell.
I love how Matt points the mic at Tom IMMEDIATELY after making a terrible joke in order to capture every exasperated irritation noise he makes.

I like how shabby their best kept village sign has become...
It has become the very thing it swore to destroy
Do not lecture me Mihovil BeckV.
I see through the lies of the Best Kept Small Village of 1999.
I do not fear the shabby sign as you do.
I don't see the point of jumping on every social networking trend because it's popular. Hi, I'm over 30.
I'm 14 and agree. Different types of people I suppose
When you're an internet personality, you need to be on the trending platforms for marketing purposes.
I'm unpopular and antisocial. I guess that explains it. :P
Am over 30 as well. I only have a Facebook acct so that some of the folks who don't have the attention span for email can send attachments or links back and forth with me. I'm not the following type and I certainly don't expect any followers of my own.
Yeah I agree. See you on Friendster!
We didn’t think it was appropriate to post this yesterday but hopefully it’s some light relief to the gloom in the news -Matt
:)
This is the first time I've ever been really disappointed by my own country. I only hope I'm wrong about my gut feeling about the future.
I agree Maxx B. Great video anyway chaps! It did offer some light in dark times.
As an American, I find that that happens every day. (in reply to Maxx B since there seems to be no indication of that anymore)
I'd be interested in a 'Park Bench' video where you talk about 'it' and about your thoughts about the future now.
5:53 this is so wholesome. 10/10 amazing content
Matt has such infectious laughter! 😭😭
Bounciest man on the internet.
"It's..."
I could kiss you both. After I'm done trying to not fall out of my chair laughing.
The link has gone dead, anyone happen to remember what this was?
im with you. hurt my throat with laughing at that
Matt: "It's-"
Me, out loud, two years after this video released, in the middle of a lecture theater at 9 in the morning: "You bastards!"
I'm liking how normal this podcast has become. It started off with "WELP HERE'S A THING HOPE SOMEBODY LIKES IT" to "Maybe we'll continue" to "Here's the new podcast!"
wait why am I calling this a podcast
it's clearly not a podcast

Because it works like a podcast. It's basically a podcast.

Tom Scott is figuring out all of the little ways Snapchat is inexplicably brilliant.
You could see the exact moment when Tom got where Matt was going with that joke at the start of the video
I am so happy that my teen years were pre-internet. By the time the internet became publicly available (i.e. not just academics) in the mid 90s I was in college, and while still something of an idiot then, I wasn't teenager stupid.
@Matt and Tom
This is really funny to watch from summer 2023
The Monty Python reference took me by surprise XD

I looked back at my old tweets from 5 years ago when I was 14 and it's hilariously awful
0:42 Well, there it is, Matt. The one pun, that *I* don't think I have done worse than. You've beat me. Well done.

I always figured that "enyay" was a reference to act of making people happy :P
I was having a good day until i googled "bellend" and clicked images. :[

Hey! I'm 50 and I am the goddess of social media! You should be ashamed of yourself branding older people like that.
haha.
My dad is 62 and uses far more social media than I do!
"Enyay" isn't slang - that's the name of the letter in Spanish. (Yes, in Spanish, n and n-with-a-tilde are different letters.)
At some point I thought maybe he's a fan of "Enya" :D
***** Probably!
Yes, it is. The problem is explaining the sound of the "ñ" for non latin-related speakers.

Don't worry, I'm 17 and I don't get Snapchat.
Kalobi I'm 15 and I feel you. No clue whatsoever. It's annoying because of the people at school, though.
I had it for 3 days and then I deleted it because of how cringeworthy it was.
Now that you’re 19, have you gotten it?
The music really improves the quality of the video. It fits nicely.
I still don't understand what snapchat is ...

Snapchat? It's for sending naked selfies, apparently some people are misusing it for other things though
I'm only slightly joking...
It's funny because it's true :)
That doesn't mean you can't compare them. And the differences aren't all that fundamental, you take a picture and share it with the world somehow.
+hairyneil Are you talking about Apps or naked selfies? :)
You should have face swapped for the intro and said each others' names!
Tom should've face-swapped with Matt's shirt.
I used Snapchat for a few days and literally all I used it for was taking pictures of random daily objects and captioning them with "look a door".
8:08 Oh, no...my Google+ page...
At least you know that nobody's seen it
I really enjoy your snap stories Tom, I added you as soon as you posted on Facebook you made on. Matt, I'm adding you right now.

Matt is not wearing blue, but Tom is wearing red.
Snapchat is excellent for keeping in touch with people
and now, 2021, every social media has "snap" feature in it.
Don't worry, some of us millennials don't have it and don't care
Can someone please explain the joke at the beginning? (seeing Toms reaction it propably isn't worth it, but I'd still like to know ^^ )
3 years later here you go northaw is the village name, Matt was suggesting the origin of its name was a portmanteau of north and thaw. Thaw meaning to defrost essentially. So Southern people would come north to thaw.
11:20 Well I didn't know the UK slang "bellend" but I know the anatomical term "glans"
That was terrifying. The face swap.
Loved that you put the monty python theme over Matt thinking

It's interesting, Tom's hair looks particularly grey, in this lighting...
...probably the lighting...
5:25 next we know Tom’s parents are getting a divorce because Tom’s dad has been talking to someone else on Snapchat
I want a social network that is a loosely federated set of forums that anybody can connect to. So basically, I want usenet.
Subreddits, perhaps?
+Anolaana Seranaar Subreddits aren't federated.

Hey, could you two make a video about "Brexit" and your opinion about it? I believe it would be interesting.
I make that monty python reference every time someone pauses after they say 'it's'.
The "It's" man once had his own Wikipedia page, I do believe:
Tom, if I go to your page and then hit videos I still get /user/enjay/videos so clearly it's still the way youtube knows you.
So what you're saying is that Snapchat is interpersonal communications rather than broadcasts?
Matt, whats so funny about intros? You always laugh
the liberty bell!
That python bit was great.
Ooooh unexpected Python in there
The face swap!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm ashamed, it took me multiple seconds to understand why Monty Python theme started to play :D

I don't understand Snapchat to be honest. My college friends use it to chat, yet the messages only last for 10 seconds, and that confuses me. I use Facebook and Twitter, yet Snapchat is a step too far for me.
Everything but UA-cam is a step too far for me. I don't understand any of it

What is your opinion on brexit?
It actually sits there as "pending", we know when you have it set to "friends only" in the snap options.
What's the title of the music you put over your snapchats? It's very catchy and goofy.
I spent about an hour looking for it: It's "About That Oldie" by Vibe Tracks. It's in the UA-cam free music audio library.
When will people realize that social medias lately have been really catering to old people, young people don't use social medias anymore.
tggt00 I don’t think you understand social media... It’s the complete opposite to what you said
I have snapchat and it's the thing that has highlighted that I've finally become out of touch. I don't understand it at all.
Here I was, as an American, happily thinking that I knew the definition of bellend...only to find out when I looked it up that it is not, in fact, about any part of an actual bell.
I deleted Snapchat because the face tracking used to recognize my cat, then an update broke that and it just wasn't worth it anymore.
