People who hate it simply lack cinematic literacy. Which is fine, cinema isnt for everyone.
For example the number 1 reason people who dont like it seem to always say it was because it was boring... well that's all i need to know that they lack literacy of the medium if they felt that way because the depth of this story isnt told to you through exposition, it isnt even told to you through characters and dialog in some cases, every little thing you see in every shot is a story telling element. the way objects in the shot are aligned, the colors that are used, the lighting of a shot, and even a subtle blink and you will miss it change on the actor's face. THESE are the elements that tell the story. Not the dialog. They say it takes multiple viewings to even catch it all and i agree because there was so much to rediscover the second time i watched it and the first time i felt it was overhyped too until i watched it again.
There is a reason some of the greatest directors of our time like Steven Spielberg and christopher Nolan praise this movie as being one of the greatest sci-fi films they have seen in their carriers and put Denis Villeneuve among the greats like Peter Jackson and George Lukas.
if the reason is simply because you aren't a scifi fan and that fact poisoned your ability to enjoy it before you even walked through the doors of the theater, well then that's just a you problem and is simply an irrational bias you have. Because storytelling is story telling, it doesn't matter if it takes place in historical, modern, or future contest; all 3 categories can have great storytelling and bad storytelling.

This movie was terrible, but a lot of people are being gaslighted by the amazing cinematography and special effects and Austin Butler’s excellent performance. But there was barely any plot or story in a near 3 hour movie, and that is a ridiculous amount of screen time to waste. The movie expects you to have read the book to fully understand it, which means it’s a bad script. I’ve never read the books, tell me why am I supposed to care about Anya Taylor Joy’s character or Lady Fenring? I heard that a lot was cut from the book that would’ve made things much clearer for the viewer. I also noticed that if you search “Dune part 2 sucks”, UA-cam doesn’t save it in your search history 🤣🤣

I am dumbfounded by comments from people who claim to have read the books and think the movie was a masterful adaptation. "best one since LotR". It's a disaster in it's own right, if you've read the books it's an even bigger disaster. I came to the same conclusion as you did, waste of screen time. Besides no plot, there's no subtlety in the characters. What I loved about the books is how complex and nuanced motivations are described in a very rational way, also there are some really trippy scenes that are crucial to the plot. The movie completely ignores any attempt at making the audience understand who the characters and cultures actually, what the actual plot is about, and substitutes that with a very boring idea "Yeh revenge for my father we will go to victory. -Fuck yeah' said the Fremen. 'Lisan Al-Gaib' said Stilgar" with Zendaya's boss bitch attitude sprinkled to make it...interesting? The stupidest thing is is that it's 2.5h of wasted screentime and barely 200 pages of book material to cover.

I left the theater. I could not finish it. Maybe it is different for people who read the books. The acting was ok. The characters were one dimensional. The scenes were visually appealing. The plot was everywhere. They could have cut 30 minutes and still given you a less boring movie. I was waiting for things to happen, hoping something great would happen. They sped through areas they should have elaborated on and slowed down for sections that didn't need thag much detail.

While this film looked gorgeous in trying to be Lawrence of Arrakis, the movie's narratives was so stripped down and simplistic from the Frank Herbert's book that is could be called Dune for Dummies. I can see why the reviewer would be bored senseless and end up confusing Dune and Star Wars. Dune is really closer to Games of Thrones in every way and if it could be done in 10 or 12 episode tv series like GoT with all the backstabbing and byzantine treachery the reviewer would change his mind on that.

The trailer was edited in a way that made the movie look a lot faster paced, action packed from start to finish, spectacular and epic. The actual film, however, is complete meh. Not that I expected to be pleasantly surprised for once, but after all the rave reviews and glowing praise on UA-cam I was immensely disappointed tonight.
I absolutely do not understand the hype, never to mention the audacity with which they compare this to the LOTR trilogy´s greatness, and why they´re calling Part 2 infinitely better than the first part. Just because a film has excellent cinematography and earth shattering sound, it doesn´t deserve to be labelled as a masterpiece.
Zendaya always has been and still is a colossal miscast (have to fully agree on Zendaya always being nothing but Zendaya and just zendayaing all through any movie), there is zero romantic and sexual chemistry between her and Chalamet, and the character of Chani is atrocious in the second installment. They really could have spared us the angry black woman trope with the flared nostrils, and yet another woke "woman slaps (white) man" moment.
Florence the Pudge didn´t need to be a part of the cast either (as she has none of the physical and facial beauty, regalness and elegance which Princess Irulan is supposed to have).
Javier Bardem is Javier-Bardemming as in each and every one of his movies.
Christopher Walken is an Emperor on two packs of Valium and Xanax. George Lucas´s Palpatine would never!
The only two people who really shine in their performances are Rebecca Ferguson and Austin Butler. The latter clearly worked his behind off - not just in terms of physical and combat preparation, but also acting, voice and accent. His psychopathy as Feyd Rautha is an absolute treat, and it´s a pure joy to see him yet again totally transform into a character that is the complete opposite of everything he is in real life.
Dune 2, for me personally, was a massive letdown.

In all the supposedly epicness of this franchise the only epic goosebumps moment I got was in Dune 1 when we saw the Worms for the first time, they tried to replicate that and failed. Paul was just winning so damn much he went from Duke Son to Emperor in two movies. The only thing that will make these two films between for me is if the next films build our true hero up and Paul is the villain. I never even read the books is that what happens ? I hope.

@@josephbanks888Sorry to disappoint you. From here on out it´s basically a homerun for Paul (because they omitted most of Paul´s challenges and actual struggles in both movies). He faces some more tragedies until the book series ends, sure, but he essentially remains the unbeatable "chosen one" (Kwisatz Haderach) and Emperor.
This is why despite the childish, kitschy elements and corny dialogue in Star Wars, George Lucas´s story and characters remain superior - Anakin/Vader is an absolutely tragic chosen one/ anti-hero/villain/then finally hero in the last moment who loses literally everyone he has ever loved and then all of his limbs along the way, and his son Luke first gets his naive, unprepared ass handed to him and his hand cut off before he can evolve and become a Master Jedi.

I think no adaptation will ever truly satisfy you if you already know the source material first. When LOTR first came out, a lot of fans hated it as well since it wasn't what they thought it would be. Your imagination and your own interpretation of the source material will always be more preferable to you than seeing someone else interpretation of it.

A problem I found is that the emotional storytelling beats seem lacking to engage us so much despite the spectacular visuals. The motivations and conflicts of our characters didn't seem to be given enough time to be fleshed out to invest us so deeply and fill us with curiosity about what happens next to them.
The exception to me was the war council scene towards the last quarter of the film when Paul thoroughly convinces the Fremen that he is the Lisan al Gaib. That hit a lot of strong emotional notes for me since it's a great payoff to a lot of setups as we see the complete reverence in Stillgar's eyes as he gets on his knees and the sense of elation in Gurney's eyes as Paul dons his father's signet ring. It's a really fantastic moment.
Yet I think moments even remotely as engaging as this were very few and far between.
Take the action scenes as a simple example. If we analyze the action scenes in terms of visuals, they're arguably fantastic. Yet if we look at them in terms of the stakes and suspense involved, I think they largely fall flat because all of them are very one-sided. We just see the Fremen completely obliterate the Harkonnen and later Sardaukar without suffering any heavy casualties whatsoever. The only time we see the Fremen suffer heavy casualties is in the rather anti-climactic artillery bombings of Sietch Tabr, yet soon after, Paul drinks the Water of Life and completely conquers everything.
Book readers will probably point out here that this is the point: the Fremen are supposed to have completely overwhelmed the Hardokken under Rabban's inept leadership of Arakkis, e.g. And I agree, except this is why the books don't slow down the pacing to spend a lot of time on these action scenes, instead speeding up the pace through them to focus on more interesting forms of conflict (especially internal conflicts for our characters). It's not very emotionally engaging to see lopsided battles being won repeatedly, and this emotionally engaging aspect is what I think DV's films largely missed. The films instead really slow down the pacing to spend a great deal of time on these one-sided action scenes while largely rushing through the scenes especially focused on establishing the internal conflicts of our characters.

The books that Frank herbert actually wrote where masterpieces, inspired countless sifi, like star wars, alien plus more. Dune part one was decent, got me into the franchise. Part 2 wasn't all tha, visually was amazing, but was rushed and too many changes. Dune is famously hard to film, but alot of fantasy and sifi is like GOT, LOTR, but like star wars and Disappointney milking it, same is said for Brian herbert milking dune.
George lucas actually heavily inspired by the original dune books. The whole Spice drug, religious Warriors who use swords over guns, the chosen one, mind control, evil empire, clones of the best Warrior in the galaxy, desert world hahaha. I can go on and star wars is amazing always been a huge fan since I was young, but frank herbert was a genius, sadly he died of sadness like padme.

I find comparing Lynch's version to Villeneuve's so fascinating since they took such radically different approaches. Lynch's approach is very surreal, expressionistic, and fantastical while DV's approach is more naturalistic and subdued. I much prefer Lynch's overall approach since it's so unforgettable and trippy.
Yet above all else from a general storytelling perspective, I think Lynch's version does a better job selling the stakes and character conflicts.
For a very simple example, in Lynch's version -- and very unlike the books -- we open already with Shaddam and the Space Guild conspiring to destroy House Atreides and with the Navigator already mentioning right at the beginning that Paul Atreides must die. "Paul Atreides must die."
In DV's version, we open to Paul waking up and the Atreides replacing the Harkonnen as rulers of Arrakis. We get some dialogue hinting at the Shaddam's conspiracy for war through Paul's exchanges with his father, but his father already has plans to thwart the Emperor's plans.

Movie was meh. First half was good. After that is was boring. They tried so hard to make the Harkonnen dude seemed scary way too long. Plus, its way too serious. Crack a fucking joke or something 😂😂

And I’m very glad. I regret even watching this movie.

I thought it was just me... I feel asleep... I was thinking maybe I'm just getting old and need to see an earlier movie... but then I finally woke up and saw other people in the theater not to enthusiastic
The movie looks beautiful but its still boring... in my opinion.

I struggled getting through the first movie. Boring and the only thing keeping that one up was CGI. No problem about the bs people are talking about the white savior shit etc. Actors acted like they did not want to be there..or they are bad actors OR they got shitty script. Who the fuck knows. But this was not the worth of the hype in any ways.

The movie is BORING. Characters stand in the desert and whisper about drug control and planets. The action and casting are poor. Zendaya and Chalamè are OVERRATED. More effort was put into marketing than the movie itself.

Masterpiece is subjective. I know some people who think Zoolander 2 is a masterpiece. All I can say to them and here is it's in the eye of the beholder and I can totally see why some would rather take a nap than watch this movie in its entirety. I am just pleased this video didn't proclaim the movie is offensive or an example of oppression for whatever made up reasons. While I loved it, I'm sorry many folks felt like it was a waste of time, but I totally get why people would feel that way with out a deep interest in the story or its characters. Great review tho.

Im so glad I read all the books way before any of the movies (including the tv series) came along .... at least I know how the actual story goes and where it heads to .... which is so far away from this piece of crap version 🙄
... tbh ... if you want a better insight to the story of Dune without reading the books, watch the sci-fi tv mini-series which covers the first 3 books (Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) ... even thou the visuals are a bit on the budget side, its quite faithful to the books ... way more enjoyable than this new trash version 😃

Compared to what we've been getting out of Hollywood, Dune 2 was transcendent.
I will say that being a sci fi fan will help with anyone's opinion. It's pretty hard-core for that genre
