May I suggest checking the local SCORE organization in your community or neighboring community (retirees with business development experiences), they usually offer zoom trainings with good to know business development trainings. Or search for your local college’s small business incubator programs, or entrepreneurs/ mentor protégé programs within your area to gather information on becoming a state recognized business.

Serious question: What/who/how do you determine if you are a minority? Father from Mexico and White Mother from USA, = 50% Hispanic/Latino. Or, in a case where on Father's side, Grandmother is black, Grandfather is 1/4 Native American. How is this decided? What about a case where a person is 25% black and 75% white - Non-Hispanic? Great question, yes the MBE certification is for black men. The application will require that you be compliant in filing taxes so I would encourage you to get those done before submitting an application for certification. If your business is just starting out then yes your w2's will be sufficient.

Hi David, you actually can get certified as a sole proprietor, dependent on the type of professional service that you offer. If you are offering a true service (ie construction) or product it will require you to be structured as a business entity. To bid on contracts and even sometimes as a subcontractor to the prime contractors require you have to hold special insurance and bonding to qualify for these projects.

Generally speaking the federal certifications are for federal contracts only and the state/city/county certifications are for state/city/county contracts. States do not put out federal contracts they put out state contracts.

This is a great question, yes you can still bid on contracts but the self-service registration on SAM is not the same as being certified as a MBE. The MBE certification allows you specific opportunities, for instance a contract may have a 5% spending goal specifically for a minority business, in order to qualify getting that opportunity you have to be certified as a minority business.

According to the application for National Certification as a Minority owned and controlled business / Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), under Ownership and Control it states: Presumed Minority owns 100% of the assets of a sole proprietorship and 100% of the control of a sole proprietorship. Hi Brandun thank you for the question, the difference is the designation, but as a minority service disable veteran you are able to get both. What I can say, is the SDVOSB has lower utilization than the MBE certification; so as it relates to the diverse spend requirements in contracts there is typically spending goals for both minority owned businesses and veteran owned businesses. Not that I know of, a lot of the information is pretty personal specifically the financial statement information, lease agreements, business filing paperwork, etc. But there are some documents that can be produced for you like your résumé, operating agreement, and meeting minutes.

I have a question just a curiosity. Or is a person considered a minority person if they have significant disabilities, if senior citizens, or if they are a woman, I am not a person of color, but I’m wondering about my status as an entrepreneur as far as being eligible for grants and loans considering the fact that I am physically disabled, deal with several other disability the same thing issues or situation, and like I said I am quotation I am Caucasian, not a big Dr skin, but I have all these other issues that I have to deal with including communication, as a podcast or being blind
This is a great question, there is actually a certification specifically for business owners who have disabilities. So you wouldn’t qualify as a minority business, you can get certified as a disabled owned business and still get contract opportunities with that specific designation.

Serious question: What/who/how do you determine if you are a minority? Father from Mexico and White Mother from USA, = 50% Hispanic/Latino. Or, in a case where on Father's side, Grandmother is black, Grandfather is 1/4 Native American. How is this decided? What about a case where a person is 25% black and 75% white - Non-Hispanic? Great question, yes the MBE certification is for black men. The application will require that you be compliant in filing taxes so I would encourage you to get those done before submitting an application for certification. If your business is just starting out then yes your w2's will be sufficient.

I started the application process- went to the county seminar and ended up on the city’s page somehow not realizing it until 30 pages later 🤦🏾♀️ And just abandoned ship in 2019. We all know what happened in 2020. Now I’m reconsidering starting over

Hi David, you actually can get certified as a sole proprietor, dependent on the type of professional service that you offer.
If you are offering a true service (ie construction) or product it will require you to be structured as a business entity.
To bid on contracts and even sometimes as a subcontractor to the prime contractors require you have to hold special insurance and bonding to qualify for these projects.

Can I be Federally certified in NC and do business in other states for federal contracts?
Generally speaking the federal certifications are for federal contracts only and the state/city/county certifications are for state/city/county contracts.
States do not put out federal contracts they put out state contracts.

If you're registered in the SAM system, you're self certified, can you use that to get federal contracts?
This is a great question, yes you can still bid on contracts but the self-service registration on SAM is not the same as being certified as a MBE.
The MBE certification allows you specific opportunities, for instance a contract may have a 5% spending goal specifically for a minority business, in order to qualify getting that opportunity you have to be certified as a minority business.

How's does MBE certification differ from the SDVOSB certification? Would you know what the advantages and disadvantages are?
Hi Brandun thank you for the question, the difference is the designation, but as a minority service disable veteran you are able to get both.
What I can say, is the SDVOSB has lower utilization than the MBE certification; so as it relates to the diverse spend requirements in contracts there is typically spending goals for both minority owned businesses and veteran owned businesses. Because the are less certified SDVOSB than MBEs the competition among SDVOSBs is less (meaning greater chance of wynning the contract)

I have a question just a curiosity. Hi there, great question. In order to be certified you do need to be a citizen of the United States. So unfortunately you will not be able to get certified with a social card and a work permit.
