Starting in April, citizens from over 30 countries will be required to have a visa to enter Namibia.

- Citizens from over 30 countries, including the US, Germany and Japan, will need to obtain a visa and pay approximately $90 (€82) to enter Namibia. Can the tit-for-tat move make things fair, or will it backfire on the southern African country? '#dwafrica #flipside
It will not affect anything, if anyone wanna visit Namibia, that person will make sure they get visa, visa requirements doesn't stop people from traveling especially if they have high chance of getting that visa, people who think it Will affect traveller they are just fear mongering, fear of unknown, fear of nothing, Namibia should collect that visa money and use it for benefit of Namibian
Exactly my point.
❤
What if all African countries do the same? What will be the impact?
@DWAfrica Visa free for all African countries. Everyone else should pay visa fee. The impact would great for the continent. Not even rocket science.
@@DWAfrica The impact is that we will embrace intercontinental tourism. Where as those that boast of their passport being the strongest will see a staggering drop in the so called passport power.
It never made sense to me how a citizen of Ukraine could enter Namibia without Visa while Ghanaian citizens and many African countries required a visa to enter Namibia. The worse part is that Ukrainians require visas for Namibians. How could you allow yourselves and your citizens to be treated like this. We Africans are our own enemies. The time has come for us to promote tourism amongs ourselves, the young generation is waking up. We really need to love ourselves, dear Africans. This is a step in the right direction. Take an example from Ghana, we require visas from almost all EU countries, and this is fair and reciprocal. All African countries should do the same to all EU countries. Stop treating the EU as a country, Namibia is way better and developed than certain EU countries like Lithuania, Latvia and some small insignifcant countries that hide behind the EU to flex the muscles. Respect yourselves and your citizens.
How can free movement be effectively implemented in Africa?
@@DWAfrica My idea is simple: Africa should stop treating the entire EU as a single entity. Instead, the EU should be treated as individual countries with varying levels of economic impact. In this case, Namibia should analyze data from ports of entry to identify which EU countries contribute significantly to its economy through tourism. If the data reveals that German citizens, for example, are the primary contributors, it would be fair to grant German citizens easier access or a visa waiver to Namibia.
However, I doubt that citizens of countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, or Romania contribute significantly to Namibia's economy. Visa restrictions should be applied to those countries. Why should a Namibian citizen go through the hassle of acquiring a visa to Ukraine or Romania while their citizens can freely travel to Namibia?
Take Ghana as an example. We operate on a reciprocal visa regime with any country that requires visas from us, yet this has not negatively impacted our tourism. Ghana has opened its borders to the whole of Africa, generating substantial revenue from both intracontinental and intercontinental tourism.
It’s absurd that even our PhD students and scientists often face visa refusals to EU countries, while their citizens can easily enter African nations. This imbalance needs to be addressed.
@@oetprepAddressed you say ?? Our leaders who carry diplomatic passports that grants them only access to Europe and elsewhere freely won’t fight this cause for us - you amd I know them .
We must make sure also that we ask for refunds of visa fees when our applications are rejected for no reasons . We can’t continue to be the old Africa .
@ I am hopefull that the young Africans understand the injustice that has been done to us. The more young people take charge of Africa the better our continent will be. Africa will rise. Look at Ghana, we require visas for all Western countries, however, our tourism is booming.
If you think Namibian is more developed than Lithuania and Latvia you have lost it my g
As African, while I support this move, i think it would be move effective if all the SADC countries maybe all African countries do this together.
Great idea!
It's simple. Most Europeans go to Africa for a holiday, most Africans want to go to Europe to stay permanently.
Holiday can be overstaying too
@@ardi08so what? That foreign money is not welcome? They pay for their stay. They don't ask for hand-outs and charity from and create problems in your country.
Not true there is also Europeans doing shady things mercenaries others
Perhaps insert “simplistic” instead of simple and that’s the end of this sweeping generalisation
Africa should unite and do this all together! In Indonesia, we used to have free visas for almost all countries to boost tourism, but many people abused it and it invited a lot of unruly tourists. Now visa free are only for ASEAN members whom we have regional agreement with
ASEAN has a lot to offer tourism wise! :)
Namibia did a wonderful job here ❤🇳🇦
Will it be practical if every African country does the same?
@@DWAfricaabsolutely Yes 💯
Namibia is actually nice to go to. @@DWAfrica
@@DWAfricaNo. Nambia Botswana and South Africa, kenya or even Tanzania can do but not every African country.
Is it practical for a german to Russia, Belarus, Transnistria? Or even Brexit UK?
Other countries : "We can go band for band"
Namibia : " F**** that, we can go Visa for Visa "
😂
Namibia has nothing to lose, it won’t affect it interests, if I really want to go I will get the visa.
What about people who cannot afford the visa fees?
@@DWAfricathen they shouldn’t be traveling in the first place ..the visa is fee will be less than their flight ticket so if you can’t afford the fee then why are you even travelling ?
@@DWAfricaEU countries visa is loaf of bread
@@DWAfrica what about those from the "developing world" that have to shell out thousands of dollars to to travel to North America or Europe for legitimate purposes - no one ever asks if persons form the "poor countries" can afford it.
Great idea I think every countries should do the same to European countries why they get the benefit to come to our countries and we do not get the same benefit
You can not spe@k proper English . Abdul 😅
well done Namibia i encourage all Africa to do the same to any country that require visa from their citizens.
Fantastic move
This Mensah guys is full of it, why should we struggle for respect just because we are a small Country, it is only fair to respect each other.
South Africa Should acknowledge and follow in the footsteps of Namibia.
All of africa we should do this.
Do you see that happening anytime soon in SA?
@DWAfrica Under the current circumstances the country find itself in‼️its not possible because we got President actually we are on Autopilot...Leadership standard in South Africa is very poor.
Good job Namibia
I agree with both sides. Yes, Namibia should work on a visa-free policy for other African nations just as Ghana did to boost intercontinental tourism. Also, if they feel as if their citizens are getting treated like secondhand goods then why not require visas for these nations? A lot of African countries allow non-AU citizens to travel visa free but it’s not the same for Africans. Best of luck to Namibia 💚!!
That will never happen
They don’t get the point about visa’s, the main purpose of a visa is to reduce the illegal migration risk. This is the criteria the US uses, even though sometimes can be used as a diplomatic weapon. I am pretty sure the risk of illegal migration (into Namibia) from countries in which they ask visa to the people of Namibia is much lower compared to that to the illegal migration from Namibia. They are shooting themselves in the foot, reality might be unjust but is reality.
Namibians don't break their backs to try and enter into Europe or USA. Just because you hear the term "African migrants" doesn't mean you understand how it really goes. In all those illegal immigrants that Trump is deporting, finding a Namibian is like finding a needle in a haystack.
@Komeshokakunanwene I get that and don't know much about the migratory flows, however we are speaking about a country that is 149 in the rank human development and it's natural for outgoing migration to be higher than developed countries in high places of the rank of human development.
My comment was deleted. But let me go ahead anyway. Me I know. What you are saying is a perception and not a fact. We don't break our backs to enter those countries. We only go there if the opportunity arises. Meaning, only unless I am married to one of their citizens, I am a scholarship student there, a diplomat or a relative of a diplomat. All those rankings and statistics that are used to strengthen the narrative are not the absolute reality. For example, when they say we live on two dollars per day, they are ruling out the fact that as a household, we typically produce millet, beans, nuts, pumpkins, melons and so on. And in some countries, they produce cassava, bananas, pineapples, maize and we own heards of cows that produce meat and milk, in addition to having access to fresh fish.
All African countries should be visa free. The West should apply for visa just like they require African countries.
Sounds reasonable to me.
How many Europeans claim asylum in Namibia? Small minded and short sighted policy from Namibia
Big mistake on their behalf imo, I think Namibian is a cool country to potentially visit one day but requiring to apply for a visa means that it will drop to the back of the waiting list for me sadly
Stay where you’re!!!
Somethings go beyond economic calculations and the decision makers are not making an economic point here. They are making a diplomatic point.
This makes perfect sense and should be adopted by all AU countries. Reciprocity is key, its also about mutual respect, not one-sided privileges! Furthermore, the AU's visa-free policy for all Africans needs to be implemented without further delay!
i wish my country Botswana could do the same, by the way botswana citizens and Naminian citizens dont need passports to travel to each others country only a ID is required😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It will not do nothing to the Country We are Africans we are not Europeans
Very interesting news. Thanks for covering this 👍

European imperialism tools against native African……………
Mensah is talking rubbish. Namibia is doing the pragmatic thing. Of course, they must have a reciprocal visa regime. Visa requirements do not stop anyone from travelling to where they want to go. People simply comply with regulations/requirements. The little scare tactic 'they might go to South Africa instead' is absurd. In my observation, tourists often visit multiple countries when they visit the SADC region. Packages often include stops in Nambia, Zimbabwe, and SA or Botswana etc. And there is little chance people attracted to Namibia will ditch it all together for crime infested South Africa. I certainly would not. Those countries without visa requirements should follow Namibia's lead.
Good move
Can all African countries do the same ?
That is the problem - unity !! We must unite and ensure that our voice is heard cos thats the only way . Namibia doesn’t have the muscle and leverage to fight this alone , it must be an AU wide struggle but since our leaders dont carry the same passports as us and they have easy access to Europe and elsewhere they don’t care .
i wish all african countries could adopt the same policy
African countries should charge all these discriminatory countries 3 times what they charge us. We will begin to implement tougher policies and stop the predatory west from their dirty games with visas.
Foreigners come and spend money in Namibia.
The job of the Namibian govt is to make that easy.
It's not
Then why don't Europeans value Africans spending money in Europe?
@@EasyMoney-p8kbecause of illegal Muslim migration
For Namibia’s move , you must question it disregarding that the western countries moves are discriminatory against us Africans as well .
This cause must be championed by the entire continent of Africa - we must be respected by the west .
I support Namibia
It’s fair and is not problematic. Americans can easily get visas and the cost is irrelevant.
Can Namibians easily get visas to go visit America?
Doesn’t mean they will, might dissuade a lot of people, especially impulsive travellers who book last minute. Namibian is just throwing foreign tourist money away
@oliverqueen5883 Americans don’t go to Namibia on a whim. Maybe to Aruba or Cancun or Rome. Not to Paraguay or Papúa New Guinea or Botswana. Those who do are well versed in getting visas as needed and there are visa expediting services in the US.
Greeting From The Philippines, Hello People Of Namibia
I salute Namibian government for insisting visa reciprocity. It`s time to face the so-called giants and so-called entitled nations! There`s no playing field when it comes to travel! Everyone has the right to travel anywhere!
Thank you for your comment!
Perfect.
This policy should have been adopted for a very long time... African leaders give too much privilege to europeens.
it's time to make end to that nonsense
Botswana should do the same
NO to giving privileges not afforded to our own citizens!
This should be the case all over africa. Africans should be able to travel in Africa without visas, but people from anywhere else should have visas, same ways nearly all african countries require visas to travel outside of the continent. Good job Namibia, praying other african countries follow suit
And you really think it matters? If I want to visit a country and need a visa, I apply, pay and visit. What's the problem?
@@JG-zb4mzWell for weathier ones, yes, but some ppl would consider paying for visa is bothering
Yes I support Namibia, more countries should do this. Reciprocity. But if you enter on a tourist visa you should be prohibited from seeking asylum or immigration. These countries just need to amend their laws so tourists can freely visit.
I support the move 💯%. The government is very correct.
Good policy from the Namibian government.
All Africa countries should put also copy this, since also they give Africa hard time to get there visas.
If Namibians were not traveling abroad to stay illegally, then other countries wouldn't have the need to require visas to Namibians. Namibia needs to improve the lives of its citizens and reduce corruption, so Namibians will not have to escape seeking low wage jobs in other countries.
Do you know what you are saying? The term "African migrants" does not necessarily mean Namibian migrants. 😂 We are not the ones on those Mediterranean boats.
South Africa must do the same too.The playing field is leveled folks y'all got technology and capital we got the raw materials. Nobody is superior than the other we all loose and win at the same time.
Could it harm the country's interests? No European country that imposes visas on developing countries ever is faced with such a question.
This move will hit Namibia's tourism Big Time. The reason that the UK and other Western countries impose visa requirements on Namibians is that a significant number will overstay their visas and attempt to work in the West. The same does not apply to most Westerners visiting Namibia. I would have liked to visit Nambia but it's now off my list as I can't be bothered to apply for a visa when there are plenty of other great countries that don't apply silly tit-for-tat rules.
A developing country cannot expect to have the same level of attractiveness as a developed one. For example: why do hordes of migrants want to enter the US, Germany, Australia or England and none want to do the same with Somalia, Niger, Afghanistan or Yemen? Does it make sense to impose an equal entry status between both groups? Anyway, it still makes sense to request visas from citizens of regions without the economic means to enter another country, as is normally the case with the visa policy worldwide.
Nonsense Namibia has 3 million people and only small numbers would want to visit Europe i understand why large countries like India can not visa free enter but not countries with a small population
LOL Easy. We just won’t go to Namibia. They want to come to America to stay. We’d just go to Africa to visit. That’s the difference, so just like that lady said, we can just go to South Africa. It’s probably more interesting anyway.
Namibians don't bother to go to US of A and stay. If you see a Namibian in USA, it's either he/she is married to an American citizen, a diplomat, related to a diplomat, or studying on a scholarship. They are not the type to sell their things just to come and struggle in the USA. more over, Americans are not our major tourists, so we can afford to axe them.
Namibians have no desire to Travel to America
Not come for holiday, some come for the minerals...that's the difference
@ I won’t lose my dignity by responding to your fatuous comment
Namibia we are behind you. It's time
Honestly, I think it's a good move for a political statement. But I think it doesn't change anything as the European or American tourists that go there are the rich ones anyway so nothing changes except the state gets some extra income.
😂 The whole point is not saying that those tourists will be banned from entering Namibia. It is rather saying they must go through the process we Namibians go through when we want to enter their countries.
Namibia is a country of less than three million people. The country should encourage more people to visit Namibia instead of trying to compete with other countries that are bigger and more prosperous than itself. Namibia is a niche market and is not on most people's radar. South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Tanzania are the top destinations in Africa.
Well done Namibia 🇳🇦
Good luck to Namibia. I’ll go somewhere else.
No, get the visa, it's not difficult. Namibia is magic. You won't regret it.
You're just broke nkt
@@darkgalaxy5548 I've been many times. Visas are a pain in the neck and a severe deterrent to tourism. Shame because I really like Joe's beerhouse

Just as the lady said, y'all can visit South Africa. If you don't see Namibia worthy of 90 dollars, few documents and your time then don't visit
The Germans already feeling the heat 😂
i get where they're coming from, but namibia needs the west, not the other way around. simple reality, innit?
That's just what you think. Change your mentality
😂😂😂 3 million population country needs the West?? For What?? Namibia largely trades with South Africa/China and when oil production starts exports will increase significantly
this is a daft move, and it won't last long because it will definitely backfire. in the mean time, South Africa will stand to benefit from some extra tourists who will opt coming here instead shelling out for a visa
So instead of standing in solidarity with Namibia in the name of Pan Africanism, South Africa will try to squeeze out extra money for itself. This sell out mentality is so disappointing
This is a commendable measure, but tbh Namibians need western tourism $$ more than the other way round. To reciprocate you need to be on equal footing economy wise.
But GL nevertheless.
Being an India Namibia has done right.
Will Nambians also need a visa to travel to Namibia?
Namibia is the new frontier in oil and gas, they stand to benefit more from the new restrictions. Soon every oil/gas hungry country will be begging to invest or set up shop in Namibia.
Other smart non-corrupt African leaders will do the same. As an African, especially Black person, if you try entering another country, they make it clearly they don’t want you there with obstacles and bad treatment.
Some other country with visa free access will just gobble up the tourist Namibia just lost..
Fantastic! Hoping that other African countries will follow too. We as Africans also need visas for most countries, especially for Europe. South Americans do not need visas for Europe and can stay for 3 months. Why are they pinalysing the African countries with these visas?
I hugely support this.
I understand the sentiment, but for tourism, there are lots of choices and a premium on convenience. I expect many would-be tourists to Namibia will just go to South Africa now.
Understandable. But Namibia is still allowing tourists the option of a visa on arrival. Is that not a motivating factor to still visit the country as a tourist?
Way to go namibia let all westerners get Visa just like your citizen have to do.i ❤👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🇯🇲
And what's your point? Or what's the problem? Get a visa and travel. End of story.
That’s a good thing
While I do agree at certain point of reciprocity, but Namibian government also needs to be proactive in expanding diplomatic negotiation to many developed countries in order to strengthen their passport, especially the EU, particularly schengen countries only give visa free access through negotiation, so it should be the Namibian government homework to be proactive in approaching the EU for visa free travel agreement.
Consequenses first, negotiations later
Nono, we are not going to begg EU or those schengens, to give us visas when we give them visas. If they are also serious with diplomacy, they know what to do. Infact, all of Africa should just follow Namibia.
Visa free movement among African countries. Just like the European Union.
It is fairly fair
Yeah but Namibia needs foreign investment and tourist with dollars . So Namibia loss and South Africa gain.
its a good move, if Namibia had asked South Africa and Botswana to do the same, iut would have had more impact. The analyst is very much out of his depth on the issue.
Namibia is right and all the countries in the world should do the same , open borders just facilitates the movement of criminals that commit a crime in a country and move freely to do same in some other country.
Today you don't need to go to the embassy to apply and pay for a visa you can do it from your mobile or pc.
That’s reciprocity.
If u travel there , I’m sure you will get the visa
That's the way to Go
For all the Einsteins applauding this move. Do you realize what this is going to do to Namibias tourism sector?
The countries with tourists are the ones now going to require visas. Perhaps Botswana and Zimbabwe. Will reap the fruits of this stupid move?
As it should be
Just charge the U.S citizens more just incase trump slaps with tariffs simple
Perfekt
If your income gains from tourism are that important, you do not put obstacles on that income. It’s plain stupidity.
And we are not stupid. We made our calculations just like people who sanction others make their calculations and go ahead and sanction.
Please I agree to this. No arguments
It wont affect citizens of first world countries.

No, it won't! It's called Diplomatic reciprocity. And it's certainly long overdue!
No it won’t, most people who can afford international travel can afford to pay for visas.
@@theyjustwantyourmoney4539 that doesn't mean that they are also willing. Namibia will most likely lose a lot of international tourists to SA from this. There is a reason why developing countries especially do not go for this sort of policy, and they will find out the hard way
I don't know where you from. But are you aware Nambians require visas to visa the EU? Besides, there is a high rejection rate for Namibians citizens. Why do you think people who put restrictions on Namibia are entitled to just walk into Namibia while requiring Namibians to pay exorbitant fees for visa and after face devastating visa rejections? The time has come for we Africans to promote toruism amongs ourselves. It is high time we Africans treat ourselves with respect. It makes no sense how people boast about having strong passports without even taking a second to realize that they only have strong passport because some countries have decided to allow them in visa free. As a young African I will rather holiday in Namibia and be treated with dignity than to go to a place like Dubai.
