  • Epic LED Growlights have sponsored me a new SF1000 and Grow Tent to try out some Orchids and other plants in. I'm hoping this space will function as a recovery zone as well as a higher humidity haven for some plants. Note that I'm a beginner with grow tents so all comments and suggestions welcome.
We also have a quick beginner's chat about photosynthesis and light requirements for our houseplants (including orchids) as these all tend to be tropical under-story plants.
See below for links to Epic LED's website and don't forget to use the discount code if anything catches your fancy.

This is exciting. I have a shelf that also came with a clear tent that I will be putting on in the fall to house all my orchids as I keep my home on the cooler side of things. That set up is from Uline. I am interested to see how things go and change in your grow tent. Looking forward to the updates. Enjoy the grow tent and all the changes and growths that will happen. Have a great day.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Why not pop some leca beads in the tray to help with the humidity, they will not only break the surface tension, but also give a larger surface area for evaporation. Keep a close eye on the jewels in there, they may find the light a bit too much.

Pebble trays should help with some humidity! This is going to be fun!😀

I used a growtent years ago for orchids. The problem is that you can’t enjoy your orchids unless you are in the tent. Some have small windows but limited viewing. I wish someone would make models with a huge view window or clear walls-I have only seen an awkward corner one. Since marijuana growers want no light to escape the tent I doubt that we will see larger viewing windows. And indoor greenhouses lack what growtents offer... a floor attached to the walls.
Yet, my orchids thrived in the tent. So did my carnivorous plants. And you can create microclimates in the tent. I had a huge growtent that I could actually put a chair in. Lol.
    Enjoy!

Haha a chair!! That would have been fun, grab some Sunnis and a coffee, go relax in the grow tent 😂. Mines sooo small, the opening is the window, but I could peak in via the bottom vents if I wanted I guess. Understand the benefit in a large tent though!

Spider farmer/Meizhi are crooks! They would not honour their warranty! It may be an ok light, but if you have problems with it...good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Can I ask what the fault was and how long ago? I heard the same about mars hydro a few years ago but it’s better now because of more international service centres. Also buying from a third party like this may also help... not sure though..

Very interesting video on artificial lights. I totally agree with you that nothing beats the sun, specially the australian sun. And I like the fact that artificial lights give light steadily throughout the year regardless of weather or solstice. I use both for my orchids☀️ 🌸

Definitely, it’s just all all or nothing between winter and summer with the sun on my back deck, the lights have been a huge help!

Luckily that light is dimmable because that is powerful at full strength.

Extremely bright. I’ve started at the lowest setting and keeping it there for a while!

Score noice...improve humidity by pebbles added to your tray of water to break water tension or better a empty clay pot that soaks up and releases it to the air with your moving airflow.

Love it , thanks Matt. It actually just hit me, I've stacked 2 open crates, so under the bottom crate I can easily put a big tray of water... and I'll definitely take your advice with the pebbles... never thought about breaking water tension & increasing surface area, but of course, you're spot on!!

They sell tiny humidifiers that can go on a timer.

one can put in a screen on the sides and grow mounts

Great idea! I’m still hesitant with mounted orchids due to watering needs in summer but it might be fun to try in there!
