This episodes boasts one of the finest songs of the series at around the six minute mark. The other episodes to watch out for, regarding the gorgeous and chillingly innocent and wistful songs that dot the programme, are The Cloud, Get Your Skates On and Moon Shot. They were written by TV composer/classical composer Paul Reade, who also did the music for Crystal Tipps and Alisdair, and are probably the finest pieces of music to have ever graced kids TV.
Eoin - No. Lots of people do. It's an aspect of kids programming that hasn't existed, I don't thinl, since the early 80s, but 70s kids programmes were really good for it.
Totally agree, and Freddie Phillips was amazing too - the Trumpton composer. They weren't afraid to use rich harmonies and extended chords in children's music, in contrast to the inane, patronizing crap that kid's TV is exposing kids to today. .
jnyc - It's probably why the younger generation now has such appalling taste in music. I mean, by contrast, listen to that out of nowhere oboe solo in Wheels Going Round, from the Get Your Skates On episode.
Yep in fact I would say that the musical taste of many young people these days never advances past the melodic sophistication of simple nursery rhymes, which is why the melodies of a lot of Top 40 crap have a nursery rhyme feel to them. Music in 70's kids TV - and I include things like Sesame St - did a great job of developing children's minds past the level of nursery rhyme harmony whilst still appealing to them as children. I produce a bit of music as a hobby and frequently encounter the ridiculously underdeveloped taste in music from young people on music production forums. And you won't get anywhere trying to broaden their musical horizons because they just call you an old fart and point out that "it's all subjective m8 innit"
Do you remeber the episode where Pootle thought he had captured the moon in a bucket but it was just the reflection of the moon in a bucket of water? Also im sure Pootle made a rocket in that episode.....
For an authentic experience of British Children's TV bac in the olden days, play this then immediately follow it with The Spirit of Dark And Lonely Water, pausing the final frame for an eon before an incredibly scary man says "...............That was a public information film" Then follow that up with Jigsaw, complete with that goddamn Noseybonk.
+matmc71 You're ALMOST there - Flumps aren't made of helium (THAT would be ridiculous), but they have a complex respiratory system whereby they exhale a very high percentage of helium, much like we exhale carbon dioxide. It's also the reason for their withered arms.
@@Jacam781 Interesting theory you have Dr Mat Mclean. I would suggest that it is the fur/hair that covers the flumps entire body, tht is the filtering mechanism that flumps use to process earth air into helium.
7:00 I always wanted to know what that green balloon was when I were a nipper. now I know that it was one of the first hot air balloons, they did look like that I'm sure of it.
+DarthEditous They did look weird. It was a very soothing programme, however. I actually think the intention was to make them look strange on purpose, because most everything in the programme looks a little out of whack. The environments are strangely pretty, but at the same time fairly grim, the programme was made during a period of working class uncertainty, and the blending together of unprettiness and gracefulness in the programme was essentially a way of encouraging people to make the best with what they had.
remember them well bring them up to date and have them getting into adventures whilst demanding the repatriation of immigrants and have them being spiteful to the handicapped.
I'm a 3 year old sitting in front of the tv watching this in my memory. Takes me back to my childhood. Very emotional. I loved The Flumps
I feel like i'm gonna cry just watching this, brings back so many memories
Sofia Fuentes totally agree
Sofia Fuentes omg same 😭😭😭😭❤️😁
I did cry....
Who could down vote this? I used to come home from school and watch this during my lunch , along with Jamie and the magic torch
Used to love this, much better than anything the BBC now calls kids' TV.
So many childhood memories.
I watched this as a kid and now it's bringing back so so so many memories!
Kids need to watch this every day!
I loved this as a kid. I just showed it to my 6 year old daughter and she ripped it to pieces.
I remember this episode almost word for word. Love it. But I think I need to move on x
My dad used to call me flump feet when I was little and I was so confused, the he showed me what he meant 😂
This reminds me of dinner time, I always watched this eating my dinner. Fabulous stuff 😉 Xx

Wow I'm not the only one watching old kids programmes for the music

Do you remeber the episode where Pootle thought he had captured the moon in a bucket but it was just the reflection of the moon in a bucket of water?

I loved Gay Soper's voices for this. Especially Pootle!

Gay was perfect for doing the vocal characterisations in the Flumps and singing the songs which featured in the episodes.

Bit misleading this, air doesnt make balloons float, hellium does. So unless the Flumps are made of hellium..... anyway, I bloody loved the 70s!
+matmc71 You're ALMOST there - Flumps aren't made of helium (THAT would be ridiculous), but they have a complex respiratory system whereby they exhale a very high percentage of helium, much like we exhale carbon dioxide. It's also the reason for their withered arms.
Oh ok. Did wonder about the withered arms... tonight I can rest, assured
+matmc71 Yes! Found the moon episode! Its called "moon shot". My life is complete.😊
@@Jacam781 Interesting theory you have Dr Mat Mclean. I would suggest that it is the fur/hair that covers the flumps entire body, tht is the filtering mechanism that flumps use to process earth air into helium.
