Being objective and from a marketing consultant perspective without letting passions rule my judgement, if anyone ever thought the show was about talent, you only have the capacity to see the frosting and not the cake. It's all about image, it's all about, who they can turn into a star that's appealing to the masses that buy the products of the sponsors behind the production of the show. Image it's primary to them, while some talent desireable and required because if you already have some talent it's a matter of honing your skills with acting, singing, and dancing lessons. They're going to spend money and they want to make sure they have an image that lives up to the investment they make. In fact, this guy looks a lot like my favorite singer, Greg Graffin from Bad Religion, a guy with an amazing voice that although's been singing punk rock since 1980, has a PhD and plays piano and can sing acoustic, but it's not and never will be the image PepsiCo (or any other of the show's sponsors, for that matter) wants for their commercials. It's tough, I don't condone that practice, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

Edit: As a matter of fact, this entire clip is heavily edited and inaccurate to real life. His performance was way longer and a lot of people were actually cheering during it. This is just a good reminder that everything you see on TV can easily be manipulated to create a false narrative for the viewers.
