  • Hector Camacho v Edwin Rosario 1986 Boxing.
This is a great battle between two world class fighters. Unusual in being two Puerto Rican's pitted against each other for a title fight...something that had occurred only three times before.
Edwin Rosario was a stiff punching no nonsense fighter. This was his attempt at regaining his title (no spoilers who he lost it to) He wasn't flashy and didn't reduce himself to trash talk.. He put the gloves on and got on with it.
Whilst Hector "Macho man" Camacho achieved great things , he was a wayward young man.. The streets made him and the streets eventually would take him, but there was no doubting his extraordinary talent for fighting.
The Rosario fight brought a change in his whirlwind style.. It was the first time he had really been hit and hurt to the point of nearly being stopped.. He came through it but he didn't forget it.
The self claimed "Macho" tag would serve to haunt him too when he would be taunted for not standing toe to toe and slugging it out when under fire . In his very next fight with former Super Feather weight champion Cornelius Boza Edwards, he would lose the respect from both pundits and fans, for being more concerned with avoiding any close quarter engagement, than living up to his adopted ring name. Yes he "won" the fight but it was obvious the "Macho" persona was taking the night off.
He would go on to defeat two great legend in Roberto Duran and Ray Leonard.. (fights that never should have happened had it not been for the much needed payday by both.)
The Macho man would have to slug it out in a couple of fights near the end of his career when legs could no longer get him out of harms way.. I will save the rest of his story for your own research. For me the "Macho man" brought razzle dazzle and skill to the sport at a time when it needed some. Thanks Hector.
