As a kid, the movie opening always got to me. It opens with the scary bit where Olivia's father is kidnapped. You see her go out into the destroyed store, then walk up to the shattered window and cry out, "Daddy...!" The camera pans back, the London fog enveloping her as that sad little voice continues crying out "Daddy!..." into the cold night air, eventually fading out. As silence descends on the scene, there's this sense of hopelessness... And suddenly... THIS music kicks right in with the opening title appearing on screen. It's like the movie is telling you musically, "Don't worry, things are about to get good!" It always got my heart thumping as a kid and ready to watch the rest of the film. And recently, I rewatched this with my 5-year old daughter, and as the music kicked right in, it was like I was right back there, as a little kid, watching it. It's awesome how things like this can still hold up.
Brilliant comment. No other Disney movie uses this trick (downer beginning + triumphant main title to reassure there _will_ be a happy ending) and it's so great. Hope your daughter liked it.
+Rowan Sales not that I'm noticing =/ a lot of people is still swooning over Frozen and parents all over the world are rather having kids to watch that over such good stuff like this =/
Rowan Sales oh yeah? then how come both this one and The Black Cauldron never had a DVD or even a VHS release and any sort of merchandise in country where I live? And how come their position hasn't changed for the better?
Well, the Great Mouse Detective was released on VHS in 1992 and Oliver & Company was released on VHS in 1996. The Black Cauldron however wasn't released on VHS until 1998, and Oliver & Company had the most merchandise out of the three films so yeah. I hope I've given you the best answer I could.
OH MY GOD!! This Makes me So Very Happy! I could Dress up like a Detective and Skate to this Awesome Song switching from Fun and Adventurous to Calm and homey! This is One of my personal Classic Movies!
Been getting this tune in my head ever since I saw the movie as a kid, just watched it once and don't remember much from the movie but this tune...always gets in my head.
The problem was this was made after The Black Cauldron which tanked so badly, not many people wanted to see The Great Mouse Detective. Had they not done The Black Cauldron, this movie would've done fine.
Alivia Julfarinda Research and I'm a pretty big Disney fan so I know a great deal about practically every animated movie made by them. Live action Disney films...not so much. It also has to do with the fact that The Great Mouse Detective was technically supposed to kick off the Disney Renaissance because it was the first animated film known to use CGI (the inner Big Ben scenes). The Black Cauldron made everyone confused and disregarding of The Great Mouse Detective because they figured the latter was no better to the mess that was the previous movie. Then The Little Mermaid came out and by this time, everyone had almost forgotten The Black Cauldron so they were willing to give that movie a chance and it was a huge success. Timing and reputation of a previous movie can hurt other movies made and this was a classical case.
Alivia If the Black Cauldron did well, more people would have given The Great Mouse Detective more of a chance so there's a huge possibility that it would've been successful. The Great Mouse Detective was also well received so that even points more to the conclusion it would've made more than it initially did had The Black Cauldron not sank or wasn't created at all.

Anab Samatar You know, there was a rumor back in 2004-2005-2006 that The Great Mouse Detective would be a TV series on Toon Disney/Disney Channel, unfortunately this all turned out to be a hoax.

Nah that's more adventure and sea-fairing sounding. I believe this uses more authentic Victorian musical instrumental. Another similar type of score would be Jerry Goldsmith score for The Great Train Robbery, which was set around the same time period in England. Also Mancini's own Without A Clue, which is a Sherlock Holmes film.
