    It is beautiful. I had one and added land snails. you will love them. They don't eat the plants. I would drop a piece of lettuce in and they would clean it up. That is how I got back into the hobby. Terrarium, frogs, land snails....gave them to a friend (who still has them) and started a fishroom. easy peasy............. lol and... Here we are!

      Yeah, remember, it is illegal to take any plant, moss, fern, grass, or flower out of the ground in all public lands in the U.S. This includes national forests, national parks, national monuments, national grasslands, bureau of land management lands, and wildlife refuges. Many state parks and state forests have similar no-picking laws. There may be exceptions for certain harvestable products, like mushrooms, which requires a permit. But harvesting any kind of plant is usually illegal.

    This video gives me a crazy idea that will probably take so much of my time. Kind of like a terrarium, but, more like a complete mini ecosystem, including tiny houses and structures and a flowing stream (using pumps and cleverly hidden tubing) and various little bugs and mini critters. Maybe even tiny human figurines. The problem I see is, the way I see it in my head, it would be a lot larger than a 10-gallon tank. Would probably take up a footprint of maybe 5ft x 6ft x 4ft. Probably thinking too big, but, sounds pretty cool. I probably need to start with a 10-gallon terrarium since I have never made a terrarium lol.

      Thank you. honestly Other than trimming a few of the faster growing plants on occasion it needs minimum care. I could let it go a month without any care and be okay. All I do is about 15 min of light trimming and a small water change every 2 weeks.

    • @WoodsandForestsMedia
      @WoodsandForestsMedia 6 років тому +4

      Wojo 77 you would want to do a water change more then every two weeks if your toad uses the water. That's a way the toad could get sick. You should add Isopods they help with the waste too. You might want to be careful with the toothpicks because toads burrow deep in soil and it could dig down to your rock layer and potentially get stabbed by the toothpicks. I'm interested to hear how the toad is doing and how much it explores in the enclosure.

  • @cattfishing
    @cattfishing 4 роки тому

    May I ask what the egg crate is being used for? I am assuming to help keep the structure and help prevent erosion? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question. I am still new to terrarium building to this degree. I thought the egg crate was to help keep the substrate from contacting the water to prevent soaking the substrate. But its usually used with a mesh material to keep the sub. From falling thru the ec as well.

    • @Wojo-88
      @Wojo-88  4 роки тому +1

      Your thoughts are correct. I used it to help hold the soil and moss in place. Window screen mesh can also be added to hold even smaller soil particals in place. In my experience the egg crate alone worked best because as the plants matured the roots wove in really well. Also not having the mesh allowed for easier planting.

    • @cattfishing
      @cattfishing 3 роки тому

      @@Wojo-88 thank you so very much for your response! I just now seen that you replied. I'm glad I chose to do as you did anyway and go without the mesh as it did exactly as you said. Thank you so much. I have a small tank I used mesh in and it's been a pain as far as maintenance goes and the roots grew all into the mesh to where it had to be all ripped up and destroyed the roots of my plants. Glad my larger tank wont have this issue. Anyway. This is definitely one of my top favorites. Such a great design and build Tfs!

      @@lukecassar4416 it's different in a smaller environment, with out a completed food chain there is nothing to control the population of mites and they can become a serious problem. Some springtails, isopods and even snails/ brine shrimp could be added to this vivarium (video is titled incorrectly btw) to help keep ideal conditions for your pet. I noticed there was some mold build up in the front left corner that could be potentially harmful. Thank you 😊. The entire lower level of the tank is filled with water. That is what the sand is there for. The sand can stay saturated without turning to mud. Then the plastic grid sets atop of the sand (right above the water line), then the moss and soil top everything off (all above the water line). So this way anywhere you create a spot below the water line in the tank it will fill with water.

    I think somewhere there is a book that says something about building your house upon sand. LOL I would have removed the sand, put gravel on bottom then eggcrate then charcoal, then oakleaf and topsoil moss. The set up sure looks great though. I pray it lasts in the long term. :-)

      i think the sand helps to prevent scratches on the glass

      He isn't housing giant digging cichlids. The soil and gravel ain't going anywhere... not held in with all of that stuff like egg crate and toothpicks. Eventually, just as in nature, the plants and roots will help keep everything contained.

    Cool demonstration. Are you going to add any aquatic plants to the stream and stream bank, or snails or shrimp or micro crabs to the stream? Or add some micro crustaceans like daphnia, cyclops, triops, seed shrimp, red tailed fairy shrimps? All of those micro crustaceans can be gotten online from eggs. All you need to feed them is some spirulina powder or natural algae in the water.

      I was thinking he could even add some isopods and earthworms along with the sping tails into the terrarium area. So a combine aquarium and terrarium is called a paludarium.

      Shaden0040 would the Worms not mess up the sand creek?

    • @Shaden0040
      @Shaden0040 6 років тому +3

      possibly. but worms don't like deoxygenated water so might avoid that layer. it is why they come to the surface when it rains, rain has little oxygen in it.

    doesnt the water get stinky and full of bad bacteria after a while? or does the coal filters it enough on long term?

      I put a small pump in there at one point. It would keep the water moving and from getting nasty. The plants actually processed the water to a degree. That being said I would still do a water change at least once a month.

    Wat water r u feeding the plants..?!? Since normal water might b rich in salt n minerals, will that do good for a closed terrarium plants?!? Or, the terrarium might get accumulated of these minerals n salts, like overdose?

    Where does he get the small plants from?? Is it just grass

    • @Wojo-88
      @Wojo-88  3 роки тому +1

      The clumps of grass are a wild dwarf grass that grows in my region. You can find alot of ornamental small plants at garden centers or buy terrarium plants from your local fish shop.

    No need for some sort of water filteration process or just add few water or does everything comebind and it last "forever" in a sense?

      I'd say the toad has to be fed and seeing how dark the soil was, it would definitely cause alot of plant growth that should be trimmed.

      You can use anything you feel comfortable with. I would recommend avoiding anything with active rot/ decomposition in it.

    Also, hi i hve one another question... I have a fish tank which has a mild crack at one of its sides, can i use it for terrarium? Won't that affect the humidity and temperature of terrarium? Also, it rests on the side of a wall where it can receive no form of sunlight... The tank has artificial lights that would come with the fish tank... Plz help me

      You could collect wild springtails (I have them in my yard) but that would be a difficult task. The batches available on Ebay are $15 or less and save you a lot of time.
