    I'd just like to clear up that thing he said about "your diet being questioned on judgement day" around 19:00. Fasting in Ramadan is a way for us to be grateful of the food and drink we have at our expense in our everyday lives. There are millions around the world who go days without a sip of water or anything to eat. Ramadan is a means for us to humble ourselves and fast from sunrise to sunset, then break our fast, be grateful for what we're given and pray for those who have less than we do.

    • @btechninja4952
      @btechninja4952 2 роки тому +130

      I understand why you'd think that but its not really because of that. I guess that is apart of the whole concept but the main thing is to help us become spiritually stronger and to really re-evaluate how we live our lives for the other 11 months of the year. while you're fasting you're supposed to go above and beyond what you normally do in terms of praying and reading the Quran and thats why it is encouraged and there are major rewards for living everyday like we're in the holy month of ramadan (there is a Hadith on this I'm pretty sure as well).

    Major respect for this episode. I know it can seem silly I fast too can't say I'm the best Muslim I'm really not, but ramadan the point isnt to starve , you're meant to live your normal life , and its supposed to make you spiritually stronger which on my experience it does. Major respect to Lawrence for fasting during Ramadan. Fasting is something that Muslims do to help build self control, fasting is not something that we do just to Starve ourselves. It is done to build this self control, trying to better yourself. Like it Lawrence it helps bring clarity to your mind, for me it helps me think of ways I can be better and try to build good habits that may make better. Another way to look at is to build patience in life something that is hard for alot of people. This can be used in a religious context or in a worldly context.

    One of the big misconception that seemed to keep cropping up is that religious people are not critical thinkers which just isn't true. It's impossible to live life especially in the west and not have doubts and question your core beliefs, you'll anyone who is practing has had to wrestle with these ideas and may continue to do so. A lot of the aspects you guys seem to dismiss about Islam seems to come from just a lack of understanding, would be cool to see you guys do a video with someone like a Mohammed Hijab and explore some of these ideas further.

    19:00 To add more context to it Ramadan isn’t only about abstaining from food at water, but it’s also about refraining from sin and ill speech. The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said “If one if you is fasting, let him not utter obscenities on that day or raise his voice, and if anyone reviles him or wants to pick a fight with him, let him say ‘I am a person who is fasting.’”. Fasting is about resisting temptations of all sorts, improving your character, as well as refraining from food and water so that it strengthens your Imaan (faith) and brings you closer to god. It’s also about becoming more spiritual, reconnecting with the Quran, and increasing your good deeds as much as possible in the month and then carrying at least some of them further on in life. The restriction of food and water is just one aspect. May Allah guide us all. Ameen.

    I think brians main issue with grasping the whole concept of ramadan and just fasting in general is the ignorance to why we actually do it, and I'm not knocking him for it because its the same thing with me not having any interest in other religions and in turn being ignorant.
    we fast to become spiritually stronger and to have a stronger faith because we are encouraged to go above and beyond in terms of praying, reading the Quran and actually learning our faith even more. the other main thing that is supposed to come from this month is that we turn it into a lifestyle and not just one month out of 12, we're supposed to live every day like we're in the great month of ramadan.
    now, that was one of the most simplest ways I couldve explained it but there are a lot of reasons why we fast and why ramadan is such a great month to us and all of that can be found in the Quran. if you do want a place to start, id recommend to read the translation for Surah baqarah Ayah 185-187. I hope you can getter a better understanding of why we do what we do, great podcast!

    Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

There is not a verse (Quran) or Hadith (Propet's sayings) that prohibits shaving one's beard. "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness." (Quran 2:183).
    In short this is why we Muslims fast, it's an act of prayer, an obligation, that the Christians, Jews and all other people of God's religion were prescribed before us Muslims.
    Fasting is one of the 5 pillars of Islam, the other 4 being shahadah, the declaration of faith in Islam,prayer, the paying of zakaat (the obligatory tax, which 100% goes to helping the poorest and most needy amongst society) and Hajj, the holy pilgrimage to the kaabah, the house of God built by Abraham.

      That's really interesting, I've heard that Catholics take a percentage of the money for upkeep of building etc, where do Muslims get the money for repairs etc?
      Also can you give more information about how & who decides who are the most needy & any examples of how you help? I was too nieve in the past thinking that all charity is good & goes to the most deserving but seeing the ignorance, selfishness, or down right theft of some has burst that bubble. Obviously there are a still great many good causes & personally I support one which gives Christmas presents to underprivileged children. I am interested in the different ways charitable causes operate, so any more info would be appreciated.

    • @carm4849
      @carm4849 2 роки тому

      @@NotAnotherKuromi For repairs, Muslims usually get the money from charity tbh. They're not allowed to take the zakaat money to be used for anything else other than the poorest and most needy.
      A good example is when Umar (RA) the second rightly guided caliph, and second closest companion if the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), had conquered both Byzantium and Persia, the money they gained in those campaigns were exclusively from spoils of war. Umar gave very strict instructions that the farmers and commonfolk of each empire could not have any of their property removed from them, and what was earned in spoils of war was distributed in charity after counselling with Umar and the other Muslims, including the leaders put in charge of Byzantium, Persia and other countries under the Caliphates rule. He was known as Umar Al Farooq, which means The One Who Distinguishes Between Right and Wrong.
      Also on a side note, I'd urge you to read the story of the poor Bedouin Suraqah Ibn Malik and how he came to wear the Bracelets if the Kisra of Persia, something the Prophet Muhammad (s.a..w) told him he would do years before it came about.

    as a muslim myself, i can see and understand the points you're making, and I think thats the fun part of religion. Loz said it best. Its not about following strict rules word for word for no reason, but its more that you interpret those rules into your own rules and living by them with the main goal of essentially living a good happy life where you've been a good person. That is the reason I'm practising Islam. Another reason why I practice Islam is to have a purpose in life, which could be interpreted into something sad and deep, but I look at it as a beautiful thing. Reminding myself that the better of a person I am will increase my chances of a great afterlife not only gives me something to strive for, but it also gives me a purpose when I'm in my worst of days. I just want to leave this earth knowing I've been a good person. As Brian said, you don't need rules to be a good person, but it certainly helps you on your worst days. Brilliant podcast lads, I wish you'd do more of these open minded conversations

      You don't have to interpret Islamic rulings as the scholars have already done that who have dedicated their lives for the Ummah. A lot of the rules in the Quran don't really makes sense as it is a test from Allah to c if u will follow it. When yk that Islam is the truth, u try ur best to follow it to the T. Islam has a moral code to follow by. If there wasn't, then we would be making up our morals as we go. Being a good person doesn't have the same meaning for everyone. Vegans think that meat eaters r butchers and that animals shouldn't be killed for food. Hope that clarifies.
