Heartwrenching version. Joni is one of the best!👋
Emotion and tears for me.
That arrangement is not the one I'm familiar with, but still a good song. You may have heard "Big Yellow Taxi"
Try "Circle Game", "Woodstock", "Carey", "Free Man in Paris", "Help Me", or "Chelsea Morning" for classic Joni.
The "Hejira" album for jazzy Joni.
Yay! - a prime example of what I said in my comment for Ella Fitzgerald about liking singers in their later years. Joni Mitchell revisiting one of her own classics, covered by so many, with decades of life experience behind her to blow them all out of the water. And that must be Wayne Shorter on soprano sax. Lyrical. Angular. Has to be.
Joni: Covers, you say? - Hold my wine.
I hadn't heard this version so thanks for that. I will track down the album it came from and remedy that immediately.
Addendum:
In 2007, My favourite musician of all time, Herbie Hancock, released an album called River - The Joni Letters; covers of Joni Mitchell songs with amazing guest singers from Norah Jones to Tina Turner (in her best form) to Leonard Cohen and others and Joni herself singing "The Tea Leaf Prophecy" in all her later years glory. And whadya know, Wayne Shorter is there with her again.
Pat, Judy Collins has a good version of this song. Maybe check out her only big hit on Sondheim's Send in the Clowns in 1975.
Her albums, Court And Spark and Hejira are both brilliant.
This version is one she made later in her life. She needed to make an album to fulfill her contract. Please listen to the original version. Much different feel of the whole thing.
I agree.
I find this version much more heartfelt and moving. You can hear that she's actually lived what she's singing. Her youthful version is great, but doesn't have the depth and wisdom that this version does - at least for me.
This version is AMAZING.
The original title of this song was "Clouds".
More familiar with Judy's version..still one of my favorite songs and love Joni's voice ❤
I've always loved this song. Thought provoking. I'm more familiar with Judy Collins' version which is faster and more upbeat. This version is more contemplative. Thanks for the reaction.
You've got a good soul, brother -
Thanks for your love of song.
Try Amelia , a song for Amelia Erhard. Or Judgement Of The Moon And Stars, an ode to Beethoven. Cold Blue Steel, Sweet Fire. Or Blue.
_Love Actually_ really is such an amazing movie!
What a beautiful song. Her voice sounds mature and passionate. I've loved Joni's music since the 60's.
Another great Canadian singer and songwriter. Thanks so much for the reaction.
I love the juxtaposition of this original release:

and this live concert vid

It's truely this song from both sides, now.
Thank you for featuring Joni Mitchell. She will never receive the accolades she is due.
I would love to hear/see your reaction to "Amelia", "Shadows And Light", and "Cold Blue Steel".
Thanks for your great posts -
I'm loving this serie, and I really hope that you do a Women in Music, with Joan Jett, with the Black Hearts, in The Runnaways (where Lita Ford amoung others also played), her Solo Career. etc.
If you have the time I'd love it if you could react to a song by someone like Austin Jenckes, Midland or some more Ashley McBryde. Love the videos! Xx
I love this version of this song - give a listen to Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, Raised on Robbery, Hejira or A Case of You.
I absolutely love For the Rose's. Any of those songs are fab. A Case of You is my all time favorite. I also love He Played Real Good for Free.
Joni has said that, in the studio while recording this, she noticed members of the orchestra in tears during the session. I know it gets me every single time.
You have kids, try "The Circle Game" but have the kleenex handy lol
Help Me & River are great songs by Joni.
Another Great Female Artist is Donna Sommer
Absolutely Donna!!!
The most beautiful lyrics in music has been made by joni mitchell
After this, my favorite Joni song is "A Case of You". You should also check out KD Lang "Crying" MTV Unplugged. Better than the original by Roy Orbison. (I know that is taboo to say)
Not my favorite version but it was good to hear a version new to me.
4 packs of cigarettes a day.
I actually prefer to the original, which she recorded as a much younger woman. Her voice is not as pure as it used to be, but there is so much depth and experience in it.
Could you react to Blackbird by Alter Bridge (studio or live at Wembley)? Or Words Darker Than Their Wings live at Royal Albert Hall?
love ur flag
Haven't heard this version before. It's interesting but I think I like the original version better. In the context of the movie maybe this works better? I'll have to look for the movie.......
She has a bunch of good/great songs, you should explore her catalog.
I appreciate the pandering. How about including women on a regular basis so you wont need that ridiculous tag line.
Why is it "pandering" to do a series dedicated to celebrating female artists? Would you be happier if he did alternating male and female artists to make it absolutely equal? I think that he's doing a great thing here - there could be any number of listeners/viewers who'll be drawn in by the "ridiculous" tag line and introduced to women they knew nothing about - that they might have otherwise skipped over as just another reaction to an artist whose name they didn't recognize. Your hostility is palpable - why don't you stop being so militant and lighten up a little?
