I would've liked to have seen what Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1997 I AM LEGEND would be like if it hadn't been cancelled due to the budget costs.
Stephen King highly recommended the book, said it was a huge novel for him, and I must say, after reading it I could see a lot of inspiration for King in the style of writing.
Love the book and my favorite adaptation is the first one because it follows it more closely. It is the one that should be called “I am Legend”. The title makes no sense in the 2007 film.
2007? The title absolutely applies. He's still a lethal nightmare for the infected. Their diminished mental faculties don't prevent them from knowing who is trapping, kidnapping, or outright killing their people. To the other point, the title can definitely be a double meaning, as he will certainly be regarded as a legend by humanity for finding the cure. I'm curious to know the reasons behind thinking that the title doesn't fit.
I had to pretend the Movie wasn't trying to claim being connected to the novel, much as I did with I, Robot, before I could enjoy it for what it was. Hollywood schlock, but entertaining. The Novel is a masterpiece, and I would kill to have a modernized Film or Miniseries that was faithful to the core and spirit, even if not a 1 for 1 adaptation.
I feel about this the way I feel about The Poseidon Adventure VS Poseidon (Kurt Russell). They are the same subject but a different adaptation. Though Poseidon could never touch the original, It was a great altered adaptation and I love it too. Same with I am Legend. there is just nothing that can touch Charlton Heston's version. It is just a piece of cinema history untouchable, as most are from that era. BUT that doesn't mean I cannot love the "newer different take" on the same basic story that is I am Legend. Just like the 2 Poseidon adaptations mentioned, I like the earlier ones more but also love the newer ones. The Omega Man just can't be touched.
What's ironic is that Will Smith turned down the opportunity to play Superman, saying that he learned from the failure of The Wild Wild West that "you don't mess with white people's heroes", yet he goes and plays a white character named Robert Neville In I Am Legend.
Love all 3 Films but as you mentioned, my first introduction to R. Nevel was also the Omega Man, I remember seeing it in grade school while decorating Easter egg's. But currently I watch Last Man on Earth the Cinema Insomnia Valentines EP each year & in short order Omega Man & I am Legend & Soylent Green just can't get enough of Mr. Heston...m.❤🎉
Ever since I was a kid, I've had the "last man on Earth" fantasy. I'm anti-social. So having free reign of the planet is like a dream come true. In reality though, I'd spend all my time maintaining quality of life, with no time to enjoy it. Need some helper bots first. Safety anxeities aside, I would make a great space explorer.
The mannequin scene is one of my favorite scenes of any movie. It’s a horrifying scene that has much meaning. Will Smiths acting is fucking amazing. His train of thought immediately goes to “did it movie by it self” then to “it’s a setup”. Very scary stuff.
The ending of the story is just iconic. It is sad they did not carry that over to this film. The first half of the film is excellent, but IMO, it falls apart after the dog dies.
They should have named the movie something else since it has absolutely no likeness to the original story other than the names. I agree the ending to the story is iconic. It's thought provoking and ironic. The ending to this movie is incredibly dumbed down. They could've named ANYTHING else and it would have been a just ok movie, inspired by I Am Legend.
I like them all but my favourite has to be The Omega Man with Charleton Heston. I especially liked the early part where he roams around Los Angeles. The music in that version works very well also.
Here's an idea for a future WTF Happened to This Adaptation? Wolfgang Petersen's *"POSEIDON 2006"* Originally - much like the *"CARRIE"* 2013 remake - the initial cut of the second remake of *"THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE"* was 25 minutes longer than its final cut, at a length of 123 minutes. 20 minutes of said deleted footage involved character scenes at the beginning before the rogue wave struck the ship on New Year's Day. Sadly, no Extended Cut of the film has ever been released as Wolfgang Petersen saw the 98 minute Theatrical Cut as his preferred Director's Cut.
This movie gives me the same feeling as when I watch Phillip K. Dick adaptations. When you watch it on its own, it fine. If you know the source material it makes you want to punch the screen.
🤌🏽Read the book last year. Love the ending. But I hated when the dialogue would happen “Blah blah” Nevel said “Blah blah” she said “Blah blah” he said. Was distracting
Correction at 7:15 they were allergic to garlic not phobic of it. Mirrors and religious symbols were the phobias because of their denial of being vampires
Imagine if the Dark Seekers had won and fed on all humans and animals, what would there be left for them to do then 🤔? Would turn to cannibalism or separate into 2 rivalry groups.
@@basilexposistion9211uhhh obviously appearance….and its not rare to add different characteristics to such things. Thats why it’s called a movie😳😳🤦🏽♂️
The book is definitely one of the most haunting sci-fi horror stories ever written. Although “Hell House” is scarier IMO, I’d never not recommend the vampire classic Matheson penned. On the movie front, the Omega Man is a fun time capsule of the ‘70s and its changes aren’t bad, just kinda goofy. The ‘07 version I’ve never really liked, but I don’t hate it. I’m kinda biased on the ‘64 film since I’m a huge Vincent Price fan (thanks Mom 😂)
2:15 Why bring up movies that he made AFTER this one for his resume? like. He had this first son. But Also had 3 others. but more about his first son. In the context of the movie, the others do not matter to this.
You really dropped the ball by not at least giving a small shoutvoutvto studio ADI and the bts photos theyve posted of what the darkseekers wouldve looked like if the mivie was made back in the 90s and they used actors in makeup and prostethetics.
Never seen the other versions or read the book but I Am Legend with Will Smith has always had a special place in my heart. Not only is it one the first movies that really scared me as a kid, I still cry at the dog moment to this day…. 😢
There have been four movie versions of the book so far. Every one forgets about the other one that also came out in 2007. It was called I Am Omega, and had Mark Dacascos. And was the worst of all four movies.
This wasn't a bomb? This really should've been camped up, with how bad the creature design was. They just looked like rabid Moby clones... Even by that time periods standards, hard pass.
its all good until those cgi vamps showed up. they could just kept them more in the shadows, more creepy but noooo they had to show it all full detail 😂😂😂😂
The CGI looks so dated looks like cartoons and Will Smith and I don’t think the movie was dark enough like the book I didn’t feel bad for will smith and a sequel this late it’s not good do good in theatres they should just do a more book accurate rendition of book with better cgi it would do better that way
Having read the book after seeing the Vincent Price film on a late night Creature Feature--it was on the same night I discovered John Agar's film Swamp Creature--and I am sorry, the dog's death was, for me no where near as sad as the deaths of Ol' Yeller; Flagg the deer in 'The Yearling' or the pair of dogs in Where the Red Fern Grows. Good try though.
Another entry in a very long list of movies that completely ignores the point of the book cuz a dumb ignorant scared greedy studio executive was worried about ticket sales. Number 1: Starship Troopers.
My biggest complaints of this movie was the casting of Will Smith, who was, at the time, not credible as a scientist, and the CGI creatures. The story also went down hill after the dog died.
I got some bad news man none of those guys you’ve seen acting as scientists know anything about science but yea shot movie, I just watched gaurdians of the galaxy 3 and I wondered multiple times when Hollywood is gonna stop using the exploitation and deaths of animals for a quick cheap emotional payoff
The 2007 adaptation was one of the biggest letdowns I've ever experienced. Only surpassed by World War Z. The definition of Hollywood always going with the bigger is better, more is more approach.
As far as the adaptations go, I prefer The Last Man On Earth for its faithfulness to the original story. The Omega Man felt "too 70's" for my taste, and I wasn't a fan of how much the Will Smith movie alters the story's ending and its meaning. Plus, it seemed way too super-convenient how Will Smith's Robert Neville was a military virologist who also just happened to be immune to the virus.
An entertaining, but flawed movie that was really undone by horrible CGI. I've read Hell House multiple times; I guess I need to switch it out and read I Am Legend next.

The book is so good I hope it gets a faithful adaptation one day
The opening with Will Smith acting alone was very well done. Pretending that the mannequins were real and coping with his dog were great.
I had to pretend the Movie wasn't trying to claim being connected to the novel, much as I did with I, Robot, before I could enjoy it for what it was. Hollywood schlock, but entertaining. Saw it on the big screen, hungover, on a Sunday mornin. The best thing about it was the trailer for the Dark Night. That semi truck flip...
I wanted to love this film when it came out, but the CGI was awful even back then. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t use practical effects.
I REMEBER THEM SHOWING THE TRAILERS TO THIS FILM ON TV NON-STOP.
I wish they had went with the alternate ending instead.
