    I worked as a surveyor on Oroville's sister twin dam, Eagle Creek just West of Indy. We used compacted concrete on the upstream side of the dam. It was 100 ft wide and 50 ft thick stair stepped up the slope. 25 ft below to 25 ft above the normal water line. Each layer was bonded into the previous layer by the action of the rollers chewing up the top 12 inches and you couldn't tell one day's work from the next. From the top of it to the top of the dam regular soil was used and bonded to the top concrete layer by the chewing action of the compactors just like every other layer in the entire dam. The slope was shaped with bulldozers days later. It was hard, but not like concrete in a street or a driveway. It could be shaped and graded like real hard compacted soil.
    It was to prevent wave erosion of the dam around the permanent pool level. It was made in a pug mill (like a big mixer or shredder) using screened material excavated right off the stream bed, screened for large rocks and mixed with cement. Rolled in with sheepfoot rollers just like compacting the soil for the majority of the dam. It was very dry, as concrete goes, just slightly more moisture than the soil for the main dam.

      Sounds about the same way Oroville is going to be done. They got 1.7 million yards to work with. Some one said Friday they already have a crusher / screen working on site.

      @johnlucas2037 7 років тому +1

      Different mix designs will have different characteristics... using a sheeps foot roller over a smooth drum would certainly leave a rough surface... If they were able to shape it with a dozer yours sounds like a very lean mix.. maybe similar to a dry version of CLSM?

      Thanks for that info. The spillway is the obvious problem. What can you tell us abut that? What is under the spillway? What strength concrete was used? What is the rebar and configuration? I don't claim to be an expert but these are the questions average people ask. More important, what shortcuts were taken and who was paid off to okay it?

    • @johnlucas2037
      @johnlucas2037 7 років тому

      I think it's obvious that the spillway was built on a hillside comprised of rock and dirt... it appears to have been mostly dirt in the area where the failure occurred. There does seem to be sections where the slab varies in thickness. I'm not sure what minimum thickness was called out on the plans but in the center (where the failure occurred) it appears to be 1' or less. If the contractor didn't follow the plans then they are at fault. Also there should have been some kind of inspector on the project so I guess whoever was inspecting that phase of work would also be culpable. DWR has the original plans.. I'm pretty sure they know what thickness the drawings call out... although I doubt if we will ever know the real truth.. Also why was the DWR patching cracks on a spillways with water seeping out from behind it yet failing to investigate what was going on under that slab is a real mystery and I imagine they will cover their asses on that one... BTW I had some crane operators who worked on the dam and they would tell some crazy stories about what it was like to work on that project... One story that sticks in my mind was a crane / dragline operator who was a bad alcoholic.. one day there was nothing to drink so the guy started drinking gasoline as a substitute for his booze... Another thing that happened a lot was fights.. you didn't get to work if you weren't tough as iron... Lots of good ol boys on that project .. I can see how some minor detail like the correct thickness of a slab could easily get overlooked.

    • @bobsmoth7837
      @bobsmoth7837 7 років тому

      John.... Apart from varying thickness and QUALITY of the concrete, some of the earlier reports on the core drilling suggest that the concrete is much thicker ( over 4 feet ) than was called for in the plans. By comparison airport runways are 4 feet concrete and they take a much greater beating. They would have prepared a road grade road bed and poured the concrete on top of that. One thing with concrete is that once it's poured you can't overwork it or it goes bad, and there are no tests for that. The actual pressure on the spillway is not that great. 27 feet of water is only 12 psi, less than one atmosphere. It's moving and a live load, but still.

    Juan good sir,another well done report and I agree that you certainly do the human interest storytelling too. Naturally! I'm a avid outdoorsman myself but with disabilities and even some help from other Veterans and friends sometimes it's just too much at one time. Here is my point; Have you ever considered doing any documentary projects? Any documentary genre at all because you're certainly gifted and as honest a person I have ever seen.

    Woohooey! Snow tubing with the little ones is too precious for words. Brings back my childhood memories of doing the same, in the same area, but no fees. No lift, either. That looked awesome, wish they had that back in the day.
    We used to visit family that lived in Donner Pass, and I well recall the high snow bluffs piled against the cabins. We all knew what happened to the Donner party...
    What a beautiful day you filmed there, with new equipment for an intrepid citizen reporter bringing us the real news.
    The Oroville Dam crews sure have their work cut out for them.
    Thanks Juan and Team Blancolirio.

    Takes me back to 1945, when I was the 8th grade at the Lake Van Orden school in the snowsheds on Donner Summit. My parents worked at Rainbow Tavern and I lived with C.B. Crampton and his family at Crampton's Lodge (across Hwy 40 from Hampshire Rocks State Park on the bank of the Yuba). Thanks for the memories. I also enjoyed making Spot Landings with you in your Luscombe. Long retired from flying, I still carry my Commercial SE&MEL ticket.

    RCC uses less Portland cement per mass of aggregate but achieves greater strength due to low void volume. Just like gluing a wood joint where high clamping pressure results in a very thin bond line, LESS cement and high compaction makes it stronger. Approaching the strength of the parent rock of the aggregate. Cylopian mortar method achieves strength due to the macro aggregate (boulders).

    Your reports about the Oroville dam are the Best. I have been watching them for weeks now. It's good to know just what is going on there. The national news never says anything about the problems that are still going on. Most people think that the worst is over. There's big things that have to be done to permanently fix the spillway.

We had 2" of rain from our rain gauge in Oroville where we live and are keeping am eye on inflow/outflow data every day, my concern is getting it rebuilt the correct way now, up to current standards & since I'm one of the average people looking for answers,that will satisfy me with being inspected and passed when finished.
