    When I was determined to buy Mizuno blades ( 3 years ago) I went to a shop in Dubai and spent trying all different sort of clubs for a complete afternoon I actually came out with clubs I never thought of: the Srixon blades Z965. Still no regret , still I love them. Great blades - and by the way, playing blades is not at all as difficult as soooo many people say and blades just look fabulous.

    The notion “nothing feels like a Mizuno” refers to their blades. I’ve tested all three MP-20 heads and the HMB was a distant 3rd vs the MB and MMC. From a practicality/playability standpoint, HMB should have been a JPX series club, but I get that premium forged hollow head is the hot class of clubs now and the MP series carries a higher brand value.

    • @lookaquarter
      @lookaquarter 3 роки тому

      I think a small possibility would be that they did the HMB in the MP line as a tribute to the late 80's QUAD irons they made, which were one of, if not the first forged hollow body irons. I was lucky enough to get a set for 50 bucks on ebay, and Im amazed how good a 40 year old iron can be. Wish I had the money for the modern ones haha

    Rick, I just found this video in 2021 and I was fascinated with your results. I have played a set of 845 knockoffs that I built many years ago. My brother had a set of 845s he was playing and we met at the driving range. We swapped clubs back and forth and really couldn't tell which was which after 20min of hitting. I was a 7-8 handicap player and he was a scratch golfer at the time. Since the look was identical from the hitting view, the shafts were stiff flex (mine were True Temper Dynamic Gold), we determined our thoughts in our minds about the club we were hitting made all the difference. Now I have to hit some Mizuno forged irons...

  • @heysolley

    The reason Mizunos "feel" so good is the high-carbon Japanese steel that is used. The type of steel used in a club is as important as the process of forging it.

    • @joelafives
      @joelafives 3 роки тому

      That's a interesting comment. We used to curse Japanese steel used in the bolts on our Japanese motorcycles in the 70's. They would strip extremely easily.

      Try standing closer to the ball

    Nice test! Another YT vlogger (initials MC) recently (in May) did a test where he blindfolded the golf pro and had him put on ear muffs with music to prove that "feel" is mainly sound at impact. He assisted the golfer with lining of the club. The outcome was the golf pro had no idea if he was hitting the forged or cast iron. In fact, he was unable to discern feel at all.

When I went for a fitting the feel was a big factor in my decision. I've been playing golf for 23 years, starting later in life than most at 32 years old, and I absolutely fell in love with the game. I played off the rack or cheap clubs for years, mainly the most economical set and went through a bunch of different irons. Name brand irons such as Wilson, Taylor Made, Callaway, pretty much everything including some knock off clubs. It was all about price for me back then. I'd trade or sell one set and try another, always looking for the short cut to a better iron game, got better eventually over time but I still kept searching for the magic formula. Six or seven years ago (can't remember), I finally got fitted for irons by a PGA professional for the first time. He spent four hours fitting me for lie, loft, length and flex of golf shaft, hitting ball after ball with different brands. He had me on the monitor the entire time, asked me for feedback on how I felt, everything. It was fantastic and I really enjoyed the process. In the end I was fitted for Mizuno 825 irons, standard length, regular 105 flex shafts and 1 degree toe up. Best thing I ever did for my iron game. This year I was fitted again, went through the same process, different professional, same result. Mizuno again. Fascinating and just as enjoyable as the first time. I now play Mizuno 919 forged irons, same specs and absolutely love them. I will always be opened minded about my clubs, but until another company proves to me they can produce a better iron for my money, I will always begin with a Mizuno bias.

    I first got into golf about 9 years ago. Just for clarity of my point I was building a swing at the time. I was using a new starter set of Walter Hagen clubs. I would go to Golfsmith in Orlando a lot and just try equipment. I gravitated to Callaway X-22 & X-24 irons instantly because of how they felt at contact. The next thing that stood out was how good Mizuno felt at impact too. Every year I like trying the new equipment and always found Mizuno as a great feeling iron. I play Titleist irons right now, but would not hesitate to own a set of Mizuno irons.

  • @banditbaker1675
    @banditbaker1675 5 років тому +5

    Interesting test and results, although what golfers interpret as "feel" is actually the harmonic resonance of the metal of the club striking the ball so it is sound rather than feel.
    If you were to repeat the test with the golfers wearing ear defenders, they would struggle to differentiate between any of the clubs.
    So Mizuno's tag line should really be, "Nothing sounds like a Mizuno"

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 5 років тому

      @@shiifty1622 I totally agree that some golfers can detect a difference, but the difference in harmonic resonance between Irons when they hit a ball is predominantly detected through hearing the sound. If you try hitting any Iron whilst wearing ear defenders you won't detect any difference in "feel" because you won't be picking up the sound waves.

I have been playing my Mizuno TP9's for nearly 30 years now and have never felt the urge to change. I bought a custom fit set of Mizuno Hot Metals, 6 to LW, in spring of 17. I used them for 2 years. They were by far the softest, most forgiving irons I ever hit. As a legally blind golfer, feel has even more importance that to a fully sighted golfer. This spring, I got a set of Warrior Tomahawk Pro Edge Irons and wedges to try, and later to keep free from Warrior. (This company's integrity is through the roof.)There is no comparison. Much as I loved my Hot Metals, the Pro Edge clubs are much more forgiving and softer with a larger sweet spot. I am now back to hitting a 4 iron with confidence. I have since purchased the driver, 4 wood and 4 hybrid from Warrior. All have improved my game markedly. I would like to see some reviews of these clubs

    When I got fitted for clubs 4 years ago, I tested multiple different irons. One was the mizuno jpx irons. Never hit a mizuno iron before nor did I ever hear this line about them having the best feel. After hitting the mizuno irons, that was the first thing i said about them, how awesome they felt! Been using them since and out of all the irons i have ever hit these have been my favorite by a mile. I've had taylor made irons, titleist ap2 irons and titleist ap3 irons and none of those were close at least as far as feel goes. I've went back to my mizunos even after having the newer titleist ap3's. Can't wait to get fitted for my next mizuno set next spring!

    great vid Rick. jumped from JPX900 to Lynx VT and had to say Lynx were a good feel just got flyers of them from a pure strike. I know have the Wilson Model blades and don't think they are as soft as Mizuno but my stats are better with them. for me feel is in the swing, correct shaft and head weight combination, that is what gives me confidence, by the time you hit the ball its too late is you have got it wrong.

    Great video Rick, that's the perfect way to work out what iron "feels" best for you, I had a driver fitting at the start of the year, and I was given an iron to warm up with, I loved hitting it, it turned out to be a Srixon Z565 7 iron and I loved how I hit it and how it felt, I'd never hit a Srixon iron before, (long story short) I got fitted for irons a few months later and I went with the Srixon Z585, they're brilliant ☺

    30 years ago I was a golf caddy for 15 months (just club players, not pros) in Japan. I saw players using many different brands, with mizuno and Honma being very well represented. I own 2 sets of mizunos and live them both, but I'm not good enough to really judge them against all others....but I wouldn't swap them either! Mind you, those Honma's were bloody beautiful too...

    Ive played mizuno irons for 20+ years. 3 sets of irons over that time and this summer I switched over the to M5 irons by TaylorMade. Distance, feel, forgiveness, amazing....still sad about making the move because Mizuno really is the best but after testing a few sets the M5 with the C-taper shafts were the move I needed to make. Now I just need to find the time to actually play!!!! Great review!

    Recently went for my 1st fitting ever. 8 Handicap and I think my order would be Mizuno MP20, TaylorMade P790, Titleist AP's on feel. Unfortunately, I am a lefty in the middle of South Dakota, USA and it is about impossible to find a place that can do a fitting here with a variety of lefty clubs. Those were the only 3 options I had. I ended up choosing the Mizuno MP20 with KBS Tour S 120 shafts and stock grips (side note my old irons were Titleist 762's from 18 years ago so probably a much needed upgrade). Mizuno seemed to be the most consistent out of all of them that I tried and you are always looking for accuracy in irons not distance.

    I went to Mizuno this year for the first ever set of irons i would ever own from them. Feel was sensational however, the biggest deciding factor in trying them in the first place was the shaft options. It was the first time i was fit into a product and didnt just have 3 or 4 shafts to choose from. I hit about 10 or so different and they're all no up charge. Had the best fitting results ive ever had!

    I’ve used mizuno well since early 80’s Silver Cups until Sandy Lyle won the Masters with TP 9’s then used those until treated myself in 2003 to a set of MP 33 which I still use now. Faces on all of them are worn to the metal on the 6 to wedge. I’ve tried others but they never feel quite as good, the ball seems to jump off the face of them leaving a feeling of not being in control and distance is inconsistent, where as mizuno a centre solid hit distance will be spot on 😊

    Have played a couple of Mizuno's, the JPX 825 Pro Forged and now the MP-18 SC. When fitting for the new set, there was no iron that had the feel, looks and sound that truly challenged the MP-18. Callaway Apex Pro Forged and Srixon Z765 (very similar design to MP-18 SC) were closest.

    I'm a high handicapper (probably, never calculated it) and I've been slowly upgrading my bag. I mostly look at performance as a clubs appearance at address doesn't really matter to me. I went to my local 2nd hand golf store and was looking through the clearance bins. Found a couple Mizuno sets and was going to buy one, but then I decided to try out a Cleveland VAS set. I had much better dispersion, same distance and a much higher average spin rate. And they were $40 cheaper.

    I spent about about three hours trying out different sets of used irons and found some Mizunos. Put the 7 iron against everybody including Ping and Taylormade. 161 carry with a 3 yard draw. Mizunos feel great when you are chipping as well. You can feel the ball leave the club.

    Played Mp-14's for years, but re-grooving them thru years took its toll. I currently play MP-68's, they have a little more off-set than the blades with very little off-set. Played many other companies irons in between, but always preferred the feel and workability of the Mizunos.

  • @stevef4010

    I used to lust for Mizuno MP-14s decades ago. Finally got a 2nd hand set I could afford in great condition. They felt good from what I recall, but ultimately they were very short heel/toe length and didn't make me play better. I don't like offset irons, so my choices were limited. Been playing Hogan Apex irons for a long time and no desire to switch. Also graphite REGULAR shafts. Club sales people always push you to stiff shafts (regular often are special order), esp if you are a good player (I was a 3 handicap at one time). I did some testing and decided I liked regular flex better (on irons) Higher ball flight, less overswinging. Stiff on woods. I'm sure they vary from brand to brand. I also think I was a forged iron snob and though Ping Eye 2's were 'too easy' to hit and I wanted to make golf even harder playing forged irons and insisted on using a 2-iron (I was pretty good with it at one time). But I did also find pings wedges balloon too easy for me, but they go very straight. Did I mention I also wanted to work the ball both directions to make golf even harder and more frustrating? I used to have a consistent fade, but I had to fuck around and work on hitting draws and spin the ball like Greg Norman and it really messed up my game. Started playing Army golf ever since (Left, right, left. Left right left).

    Hey Rick! I tested out the Mizuno MP-20 MMC’s today and instantly fell in love. I put them against my Hogan Ptx Pro’s and also tested the Wilson Staff blades, Ping Blueprints, and the new Titleist CB’s. Those Mizunos in the KBS $-Taper X shafts were so pure I was beside myself. Consistent performance and numbers on TrackMan, but the feel was unreal. I love the Hogan’s but the Mizuno’s may have to go in the bag!

    When I purchased my irons this year, my lean was heavily on Mizuno's feel. But once at the fitting and trying multiple clubs, the Mizuno Forged became #2 in feel and performance. Callaway Apex beat out the Mizuno in both those categories and loving my clubs since. Feel is quite subjective, and both did feel great!
