This looks great! I know my husband would like it. Today I made Calico Beans. Very yummy… and I cut up sausage with it.

On a long trip with my nephew age 3. My mother was driving and drinking a coke. My nephew said “Nana I’m telling the police you’re drinking and driving.” 😂 I love this recipe. My mamaw used to make this all the time except she used bacon.

Oh, Vera, this took me back to when I was five (almost 70 years ago). My dad was a pastor. I had gone with my mom to the doctor and she had to take me in to him. I remember him asking her questions and mom answered "no" to her questions about drinking. I interrupted. "Mom, you didn't tell him about the beer and ale." She was so embarrassed. We never ever had soda (cola, pop) in our house, but every once in a while Mom would drink some ROOT beer or some ginger ALE. Needless to say, I got a big talking to and a lot of education about the difference between the evils of alcohol and what she drank. BTW, I love this recipe and think I'll make it with some sweet potato slices.

I used to love when my mom made a dish similar to this. QUESTION: Recipe in description and on the website says “1/2 teaspoon (optional)” but doesn’t name the optional ingredient. Can you tell us?

@@gregscumberlachiakitchenno problem. Thanks for adding it. I definitely want to make this. My mom used broccoli spears instead of green beans, but green beans sound delicious and I usually have them on hand.

Hi Mama Vera…Happy Mother’s Day ! I would love to see a video of your family’s version of Jabalaya sometime. I loved my dearly departed sister’s, but for the life of me I can’t remember how it goes.❤❤😊💐🌸🌼🪻
