  • My inspiration came from What's the Mashup? ( • 100 Movies Dance Scene... ) but I didn't manage 100! The idea was to do the same for movies from the Golden Age - meaning no title later than 1953 (although there is one at the end.) Oh, and none of these clips was sped up or slowed down.
    Turn on subtitles to find out the film names.
    PS. I write books as well. Here's two very reasonably priced ones about movies:

    Film Editing is the one art form unique to the cinema. All other constituent parts of the medium derive from something else that came before.
    Writing and composing had been around for centuries; production design, special effects, acting and directing all came from the theatre, and sound was a later development following on from the phonograph. Even cinematography had an ancestor in photography.
    But editing had no ancestor. It was invented by the cinema and remains the essence of it. And yet now the Academy has decided - in its ever decreasing wisdom - to relegate this award to a highlights reel.
    Disgraceful.

    Every six months or so I have to come back to this one. The editing, in selection, in cutting, and never missing a beat, is just incredible, the general mood is tremendous and it sustains throughout. It's a fun love letter to old Hollywood: musicals, follies, comedies, and everybody's happy and happy about being happy. it's about the perfect length, it can't get old. This video basically justifies the entire existence of UA-cam.

      Very true but the studios had very shrewd executives and producers who TOOK CHANCES and developed people that they knew had "something" special. Debbie Reynolds was not a dancer, was scared when they assigned her Singin In The Rain and look at her in it. Fantastic. They trained her and spent months rehearsing and you see the result.. Most (not all) producers/gatekeepers now are just money people--they're not interested in DEVELOPING talent, just exploiting it.

      That was from the film "Yankee Doodle Dandy". Jimmy Cagney was aged up at this point in the film - the finale.
      There are those who say he was an actor who just mugged it when dancing in his early films. This scene shows that's rubbish.
      Only a highly skilled hoofer could have done this sequence of tap steps. Here's the scene, the short sequence starts at: 2' 23":

    It's amazing how Hollywood has changed. Once upon a time you not only had to be either beautiful or handsome but have talent as well. Most of the big stars of the 30s, 40s and 50s could sing, dance and play an instrument along with outstanding acting chops. How many in Hollywood today can do much more than act? Or maybe the movies these days don't allow them to showcase all of their talents. One of the reasons I like old movies so much.

      Ananias, James and Warren Berry.
      See the whole routine at ua-cam.com/video/fBP1C_kcvok/v-deo.html
      The whole contiuous take starts almost 30 seconds before this with them doing the splits, twirling canes and running up the stairs, before leaping from the balcony.
      So many things could have gone wrong to spoil the take (including throwing their canes from out of shot for them to catch at the end). God knows how many times they had to reshoot. The one on the left (Ananias, I think) looks like he's about to lose his hat on landing, isn't quite in position to receive the cane cleanly, and trips on the step (!) on the way off stage at the end. (I'm still not sure whether the trip was scripted, adlibbed or a goof.)
      They were not credited for the movie, Panama Hattie. Ananias died less than 10 years later.

      I think it says something too about the timeless quality of the dancing and a song like this. So many "younger" people these these are so "ewww" about anything not the most recent. Stuff evolves but retains what comes before. I think the best performers are the ones that can appreciate what came before.

      @esmeephillips5888 4 роки тому +19

      That was Fred Astaire's and Hermes Pan's contribution. Fred said: 'Either the camera dances or I do.'
      Notice that this compilation omits Busby Berkeley's massed spectacles, which were more about cinema trickery and editing than choreographic or performing skills. The aesthetic of the music video owes more to Buzz, although he did not try to disguise lack of talent with fast cutting.

      @Otakumichibi 4 роки тому +9

      @@esmeephillips5888 Interesting, thanks! Too bad both aren't used more equally. Though I do get using camera edits in case the actor can't quite get the moves or to draw the eye.
      Celebrity casting or not, an actor/tress can mostly be trained, so I hope the static camera returns one day. I also miss it's use in action films like Jackie Chan movies so to look at the great fighting stunts.
