Huge Half-Life/Portal fan. My friend and I used to obsess over the ARGs, comics, and theories. Back then with Portal 1, people were just excited that we had something else related to Half-Life. The credits list the model for the main character and says that the main characters name is Chell. There were theories that Chell is a robot or theories that she was an employee and stuff like that. Portal 2 pretty much sets things straight though given that it doubles down in the story department.
I remember I wrote a fanfic for my friend that basically was the plot of Half-Life 3 where Gordon Freeman "freed" the "man" (people) of the world, Chell was a "shell" and protected the people using her portal gun (and plot points in Portal 2 that I won't get into), and Adrian Shepard "shepard" the people into the new world. It was cheesy, but I honestly wrote a lot of stuff like that back in the day for fun. haha.
The GlaDOSE and Gladys (Gladis) thing doesn't really matter I don't think. People still fight over it to this day. During the commentary tracks for the games, the different devs pronounce it differently. But I figured if it IS a play on Gladys, which it has to be, then you would say Gladys. But that's just me.
It's also super interesting that you had that much trouble with the game Matt. The problems you had were very common though back in the day, especially since it was such a different type of game then. Those room you showed specifically gave people trouble. I also had problems with it, but it was less frustration and more like...okay...how am I not placing this portal correctly. It acted more like motivation for me. But I also had friends that played it and was in the early Portal community so that was also a part of my enjoyment.

I bought Portal and Portal 2 and never played eirher. I've always viewed them as puzzle games, and I do not have puzzle brains.
Also, I swear I remember a Giant Mech Pilot cartoon from the 80s where the girl mech had torpedo boobs, but fuck if I can remember what it was called...
