  • At a time when educators may face restrictions on what they can teach, a contest sponsored by the non-profit organization National History Day offers students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to explore significant topics of history. Correspondent Faith Salie talks with some of the young people using writing, performance art and documentary filmmaking to tell stories of the past that resonate today, proving that history never gets old.

I am a retired Elementary schoolteacher who has had a passion for History ever since my 8th grade teacher, Mr. Wilson, made it fun and interesting!
I really wish this event had been around in 1959...I would have been a participant. Kudos to all those who participated!! They are winners because they are better humans from their knowledge.

I’ve judged for regional History Day competitions, as part of NHD. It is so much fun and the students enjoy showing off their passions, research, and creativity.

My small county in western Massachusetts contributed the most members to the 10th mountain division during WWII, to any one unit they contributed 10 people from one town, all world class skiers, all award winners, some never made it home, I serve in the 10th mountain now. Neat little bit of history.

I pursued a history degree for a couple of years, before earning a degree in English with a minor in Humanities just five years ago. Plus, was a historical writer for a state-wide public radio show. Many people feel that history is boring, and all about wars and treaties. When in fact, everything has a history: movies, TV shows, pop culture, music, clothing, cars, food, etc. When you think of how history or historical items apply to your life-- perhaps you enjoy Art Deco architecture, or love vintage clothing from the 1960's, or enjoy old movies from the 1940's--then it's easy to find history appealing and interesting. These intelligent history-loving students have proved just that!

So wonderful to see this enthusiasm about history. My dad was in the 10th Mountain Division so I was thrilled that Aesop’s presentation was recognized. I would love to go to this event!

I wasn’t aware of this competition, but I’m already a fan of it! I’m a huge supporter of youth programs outside the typical 7-3:30 school day. Organizations like this and sports etc, all serve a critical role in development.

I did NHD and did documentaries each year. It was a blast. We did history, including handling original sources like letters from President Hoover from the Boxer Rebellion, learned writing skills, get better at using technology and learned teamwork.

Limiting history is a crime ,a big crime,it doesn’t do us any favors to ignore where we come from, so that we learn where we are going !
