I'm so glad I stumbled on this video. I have ruined all of my boots in the past because I keep applying brown polish on them and they lose the light brown color. Now I will start using the right material for my boots in the future.
What we used out in the desert was coconut oil. Mix in a little petroleum jelly and then add a layer of beeswax. Been using this mixture for 15 years. However these are all work/combat type boots
In my personal experience, creams are used to help maintain the look/color of the leather where as oils help maintain the performance of the leather. So: Work/outdoor boots = oils Dress/casual boots = creams
I always use the mink oil paste on my boots. I think it looks better, and keeps them in great condition. I also apply it with a toothbrush, and you can get it exactly where you need it without over application or wasting it. You can always add a bit more if needed to any part of the boot. If needed, I can buff it with a cloth or brush.
I personally did for my Iron Ranger 8111s: 1. Boot brush/Welt brush for dirt 2. Leather Cleaner/sponge to clean (wipe with cloth) 3. Dauber brush/Leather Cream in circles to get all over boot, used finger to get near the base of upper (cloth to remove excess) 4. Boot brush to even out 5. Leather Protector to final. I took inspiration from your video first and some others. So thanks man!! In particular the cloth tips about it having 2 sides, since a lot of people seemed to complain about lint.
Thanks for sharing.I am doing my redwing collection now a couple pair a day.My redwing roughout 8886 are what im experimenting with now.Last night i used the cleaner /sponge redwing brand 2 caps to 3oz h20. I applied the leather cream that comes in the jar a white cream. It says it has neatsfoot oil blend on front of jar label /redwing brand.I am letting dry for a few hrs and later today i will apply the all leather natural conditioner to give it the more soaked in darker coat protection.Long story short i am using both procedures you used which i believe will condition and protect.I just used the boot polish on my black beckmans last night and the neutral polish color for the cigar beckmans.I also did my 8138 briar oil ones last night and just used the mink oil but after that wears off i will go to the liquid oil redwing brand also.I think i will oil for conditioning and apply mink oil for water resistance from time to time depending on season or weather.I am going to wait 6 months or more to do anything to the 877 oro legacy due to the oil that is tanned in now is so dang good from factory.I like the 877 most due to overall quality and the full lleather footbed like a moccasin inside the boot vs just the toe box and heal on the shorter 6 in heritage versions. The entire footbed just forms to the foot.I still have the amber iron rangers to do and black cherry beckmans and one to experiment with will be the my next favorite spitfire roughout black blacksmiths. What a great boot and leather.I have had my favorite work boots 606 for years since i retired from airlines a couple years ago but now back as contractor i get plenty of use with my redwings and danners.I was doing the pecos for years due to quick pull on at o dark thirty every morning for quick and easy on/off.Now with more flexible hrs and doing home inspections on the side i have time to tie laces lol.i just tie up to the 8th hole on the 877 and leave 2 which works for me. i would add 3 or 4 speed hooks if i had to tie all/ill end here since so long. Thanks for all the vids and info.
I think the cream works better in a place that doesn't flex much, like the toe box. I once used it on the whole boot and it left it feeling slightly tacky. It buffed out into a nice shine, so I will probably only use it on the toe box from now on.
Would totally use the boot cream on my 8119 (ox blood) and 8086 (charcoal rough and tough) iron Rangers. Just to keep some of the natural patina up and not letting them get too dark. Thanks.
I've always applied the Redwing mink oil/beeswax paste to my boots, just using my hands. I feel I can work the product into the leather more effectively that way. Thoughts?
In my opinion, by hand/palm/finger is the only way to apply a wax or cream to leather. If you're putting lotion on your skin, do you first put it on a rag, then apply it to your skin, or do you put it on your palm then work it in? Leather (being skin) should be treated the same way. That's why I also use only Saphir polish/waxes, as they're not harmful to the skin like a typical petrochemical wax like Kiwi or Lincoln. If your shoe polish stinks and burns your skin, then you don't want to put that on expensive leather skin either.
For leather goods its always suggested that the leather should first be dry before adding a waxy/oily agent. I think the leather conditioner should contain water in its ingredients in order to really hydrate the leather otherwise I think one should dampen the leather prior to adding and oil or waxy substance which doesn’t contain water in its ingredients. It is skin after all and it’s what we do to our own living skin.
I prefer to boot cream on light leather. It doesn’t change the color and it does actually condition the leather. I use it only on my light leather boots
Check stride wise. If irc leather cream is neatsfoot which is boiled down cow bones or something horrible. The other is mink oil and pine pitch and bees wax. It will darken the other wont
I know this is an old post, but did TheBootGuy do a followup where he explains to his wife how her pretty boots are actually improved by making them dark?
OK weird question but could you use the conditioner on the leather, but from the inside, and then apply the cream on the outside? Would that give you the benefits of the conditioner without changing the color?
Hi. Thanks for the video. I've got a leather cream with ingredients listed as carnauba, water, ethoxylated synthetic alcohol and synthetic oil. Should I be worried about the synthetic ingredients?
Not being disrespectful but a Boot Guy should know that conditioner restores the dry leather and if there is mink oil in the conditioner it will also darken the leather. The cream polishes and brings the luster out after conditioning .if conditioning is needed.
I have ridden horses all my life and to take care of my tall field boats I always used boot conditioner first and then applied a boot cream on top. However, I have never used the Redwing kind so that might be slightly different.
Great video! What’s the difference between mink oil and all natural leather conditioner?
7 років тому
Mink oil first of all has silicon in it (wich some say can dry out the leather) and is just mink oil. One can debate if its real mink oil or not. All natural leather conditioner is a mix of Pine pitch, mink oil and beeswax so more natural. My personal opinion is that the conditioner get absorbed more into the leather as the mink oil just kind of stays on the outside. (Could suffocate the leather, leather need to breath). With roughout suedes like the muleskin leather from Red wing the mink oil is better. but all rough and tough leathers should be interduced to the conditioner. Oil-slick leathers and the amber-harness leather from Red wing (basically all oil-tanned leathers) should have boot oil applied to them. Hope this helped!
Just subscribed, I bought The Red Wing Heritage 1907 Boot yesterday so I want to learn more about boot care. Love your videos. Is minimal heel slippage common until the boot breaks in? Thank you 👍
I see that it is opinion, but I personally like the boot cream, which does not have the milk oil, as I prefer to color and patina over the darkened color. But again, I do understand that's all preference.
I have a question that I am confused about. I bought Red Wing oxblood color boot iron ranger 8119...My question is what's the best thing to put on them? I was told NOT to use boot oil because of the leather by the person at the red wings sales person. I see UTube videos of people using boot oil on iron rangers so I am confused....lastly I don't care if the color changes so what your opinion! Thanks in advance I,learned so,much from your Chanel by the way....
+Gary Gary In defense of Retail salesman staff everywhere. It's hard for them to be up front and honest. It's an oil tanned leather. So boot oil would be fine. The color will change. You might just end up with a brown boot. You can always test it out on the toung or the back side of the eyelets and see just how dark it will be. Since the leather is dyed/ curred to the color it going to return after time. But, your only going to add more oil to it when that time arrives. Worst case scenario. You end up with a whole new color of iron Ranger.
TheBootGuy Thanks so much for your info I so appreciate it. I don't care if the color changes and your right the color should come back after a wile. I just want to protect the leather....
I hate to criticize people who are doing their best, but it's just goddam rude and greedy to waste people's lives like that in order to jam in another ad. That was sheer hell. After the first four minutes of "Blah, blah, blah," I just skipped forward until if got to "leather conditioner." Then I hit dislike, wrote this criticism, and off I go to make sure I never see another one of these waterboarding videos again.
great review bro. i just got the iron ranger 8085, what should i use with my IR 8085??? the red wing boot cream or the leather conditioner...would be of great help...

All-natural leather conditioner (it will darken the leather) all cooper rough and tough leathers are recommended by Red wing to be conditioned with the all natural leather conditioner. I've got the Moc-toe 1907, same leather. Didn't want to loose the character of the leather so i've been going with the neutral boot cream and i find myself doing it ALOT. The cream doesn't condition the leahter as much as the Natural conditioner will. So i'm saying screw it.... putting the conditioner on now :)

First off let me thank you for hitting that like button it's hard working subscribers like yourself that keep channels like mine alive even though one might start to consider what's an average lifespan of a project such as this I know what hardworking men and women like yourself we can keep the channel alive. Now to your question. There is nothing made that will preserve the color.
Your welcome, keep doing and share good knowledge about stuff like this, very good content, well deserved more like and subscriber.. oh and one thing.. if you had iron ranger 8111, what is the type of conditioner/oil would you choose for your shoes?
I don't know if this answers your question, but I suggest you try Bickmore's 4 Leather conditioner. It's the only conditioner that I've used that doesn't darken leather.
I use conditioner on silicone base. Red Wing also tan there leather with mineral oil. Why using good natural oder mink oil on not natural tanned leather?
How would you recommend I condition my boots before I wear them for the first time? I was given mink oil paste and was told by the store owner to only use it nothing else. But after watching several videos, it seems like I there is more I should be doing. What do you recommend?
Upper leather. Cowboy boots. Old West is the maker.

Jay Baptiste if it’s just regular smooth (perhaps chromexcel) leather then just go with a basic clear conditioner if it’s oil tanned I would go with a boot oil or perhaps the all natural leather conditioner that’s in the video. Most mink oils contain added silicon that can dry up the leather (suffocate it) because the silicon closes of the breathability of the leather. Best regards A random cobbler
Hey Boot Guy, I recently purchased my first pair of Redwing #914. In the past I've always used Sno Seal on my work boots but I asked the clerk what the best product for my boots would be and they suggested Natur Seal liquid formula. What is that stuff and is it really the best product to protect my Redwings? Thanks.
Hi, i have red wing 8176 irish setter, i prefer the color to be much less the same with it's original color (black doff with a little shine on it), and i don't want my boots to be shiny like black dressing shoes and too supple, any suggestion?
7 років тому
Neutral Red Wing boot cream. Don't buff it to much with brush. More buffing more the shine.
Now I'm wondering how this relates to the mink oil (I only use it on my muleskinners and oxblood) and the all natural boot oil (used on my oro but made them super super dark)
So which one do you recommend for the Ted Wing copper rough and tough finish? I’ve seen conflicting descriptions of that finish as both oiled and rough out.
What can you do or use to maintain the leather but also keep the light brown color look. I do not like the dark brown look and prefer the light tan look
Boot Guy or anyone. I just bought some Georgia wedge Barracudas and I do NOT want to darken them. Would this work on the Barracuda Gold without darkening them.
Used the neutral boot cream on my copper 1907s and there’s like a weird white layer on parts of my shoe. Makes the creases look ashy and dry. What should I do? Very noticeable on the toe area of the boot.
Best way to soften new calfskin leather dress boots? I just picked up a new pair of Allen Edmonds Daltons and the squeaky leather is kinda annoying. Any tips would be great!

Neutral leather conditioner or just baby/athletics powder on the squeaky areas.
Lejames Bron I have never cleaned suede before So with out first hand information I can't help. you should ask brian the boot Maker what he would use. sorry If you don't know who he is He has a UA-cam channel where he rebuilds old boots.

I like my boots lighter. My 1907's have a copper light brown color to them so I would definitely go for the cream
Im about to apply some treatment to my Iron Rangers
In my personal experience, creams are used to help maintain the look/color of the leather where as oils help maintain the performance of the leather. So:
Work/outdoor boots = oils
Dress/casual boots = creams
yep. and that's why i dont understand why some people use a natural coloured shoe cream for a one tone shoe.
Your comment helped me to decide what to use for my boots, thank you very much!
A new pair of boots, wolverine, by the way, steel toe, when needs its first oiled? I find someone saying at unboxing... what do you think?
Roquentin new pair of boots should be oiled about a month and a half after start of wearing
Thank you, my friend.
Boot cream looks better to me. It keeps the character of a nicely used boot.
Paul Valas I agree. I like that mottled look. The conditioner looks like you stepped in a puddle of water to me.
I always use the mink oil paste on my boots. I think it looks better, and keeps them in great condition. I don’t like to darken the light tan leather so I think I am going to get some boot cream. Fantastic video. You helped me decide.

Just a thought. I think you should recommend very dry and beat on boots to allow oil or cream to sit overnight to really allow for the best results.

Fast forward to 5 mins. It's where the video should start.
I've always applied the Redwing mink oil/beeswax paste to my boots, just using my hands. I feel I can work the product into the leather more effectively that way. Thoughts?
Frank Fattore I can see how you would be able to massage it into leather better with your fingers for it to be absorbed.
Frank Fattore I do that too. Works great!
On those boots, I would clean them first with a very damp washcloth, then apply Lexol conditioner liberally.

Thanks.
I have of brown red wing blacksmiths how often, roughly, should I use the wax conditioner?
A little heat and plain boot oil.
I use artisans son products. Start with leather oil then condition. All natural but without the cheap oils .

Hi, i have red wing 8176 irish setter, i prefer the color to be much less the same with it's original color (black doff with a little shine on it), and i don't want my boots to be shiny like black dressing shoes and too supple, any suggestion?
Neutral Red Wing boot cream. Don't buff it to much with brush. More buffing more the shine.
Now I'm wondering how this relates to the mink oil (I only use it on my muleskinners and oxblood) and the all natural boot oil (used on my oro but made them super super dark)
i prefer the cream boot , the second one changes its color !!
I know this post is pretty old, but I have a question about a product that's been around for a while: Huberd's Shoe Grease. thoughts? Thanks!
Stridewise did vids about Huberd's. He thought it was a great product, but like Red Wing leather conditioner, it darkens the leather.
haha...he said shaft.
Man, I miss the days of being stoned watching UA-cam. Thanks for the comment “ rub it hard!”
@@TheBootGuyreviews Honestly...I just got high before I conditioned my red wings. Your video helped a ton btw.
So which one do you recommend for the Ted Wing copper rough and tough finish? I’ve seen conflicting descriptions of that finish as both oiled and rough out.
Rough and Tough is oil tanned. If you want to maintain the original colour use the boot cream.
What can you do or use to maintain the leather but also keep the light brown color look. I do not like the dark brown look and prefer the light tan look
Cream
Boot Guy or anyone. I just bought some Georgia wedge Barracudas and I do NOT want to darken them. Would this work on the Barracuda Gold without darkening them.
The color on that boot is unique that nothing on the market will preserve it .
Boot cream all the way

Hello Sir, I have a ? Can I use Scout boot cream on my cars leather seats? thank you
I have never used Scout boot cream.
Used the neutral boot cream on my copper 1907s and there’s like a weird white layer on parts of my shoe. Makes the creases look ashy and dry. What should I do? Very noticeable on the toe area of the boot.
Is obenauf's any good?
conditioner first, then you apply the cream.
Miguel Chavez
can you elaborate on that?
So, Now I have to mind my Beeswax 🤗
Best way to soften new calfskin leather dress boots? I just picked up a new pair of Allen Edmonds Daltons and the squeaky leather is kinda annoying. Any tips would be great!
Neutral leather conditioner or just baby/athletics powder on the squeaky areas.
How often should this treatment be performed?
When your boots look dry Or when you have nothing to do.
TheBootGuy is there something I can clean suede weekenders? Or just the nutbuck?
Lejames Bron I have never cleaned suede before So with out first hand information I can't help. you should ask brian the boot Maker what he would use. sorry If you don't know who he is He has a UA-cam channel where he rebuilds old boots.
Nubuck suede cleaner. Red wing also have a video on youtube you can check out if you're in doubt.
