As much as editing is driven by passion and artistic drive, we can't ignore the elephant in the room: likes, comments, and followers partially provide us with motivation to continue producing content. This can be tricky to navigate, as we may start basing our sense of self-worth, success, and productivity off of these numbers.

you’re so right about getting too used to the attention because my editing account blew up after 4 posts and my recent edit got less likes than usual, but even though it was still around 1000, I couldn’t help feeling disappointed even if I know that’s still so many likes.
this is so true, back in 2019-2020 i was on that editing "high" receiving lots of likes/followers/comments. but now my hype has kinda died down and i dont feel that motivation to edit anymore

i love this so much, lauren you’re someone who understands not just the editing process extremely well but also the social and algorithmic aspect of it that is impossible to avoid. hearing you speak on things that we all experience brings a needed feeling of solidarity to the editing community!!

Thank you Lauren. This came out right on time just as I was doubting myself. I joined the editing community wayyyyy too late and I always thought I’m never going to live up to big editors. I really want to stop thinking that way because I do love editing and I love taking the time to create something for a character/celebrity or whatever who I love and appreciate. I’m definitely adding this to my Spotify!

honestly, a podcast abt editing is actually a good idea cus there's so many things abt it that people don't talk abt. also, I'm not really into podcasts, like I watch/listen to it occasionally but this seems really cool ❤
when u spoke about thinking abt it from a third perspective IS SO REAL. ive always flopped bc it looks good to ME is complicated to ME but to a non editor they would just be overwhelmed or confused which is why velocities do so well bc it looks good to them
And this is a good idea for editors that feel demotivated and feel like editing is not their thing but editing is for everyone we all learn.
What you said about validation increasing your motivation to edit is very true- however, I feel like (personally, at least) whenever an edit gets a lot of attention suddenly it can lead to massive imposter syndrome (especially if it's an edit that you didn't care for as much) and this can often do the opposite and put you on an editing rut (basically thinking "oh, this is just a fluke- I'm never gonna get this level of exposure again even if I really like the edit so what's the point?")
I am definitely putting my thought process on blast here but yeah

ngl i think the problem for me is i just dont know who to edit, if i edit what i like, its gonna flop, but i dont wanna edit "popular" things at the time. the stuff thats popular rn are like new shows and movies velocity edits edited with capcut. i 100% prefer transition edits, the editing community was full of creative transition edits back then, now its just velocities and anything other than velocity edits WILL flop. editing was just so much more fun for me in 2021, now it just feels forced.
What you just impeached is so true; i am an editor for 3 years already and I never get a million likes nor views yet. Even if some people appreciate my edits in instagram, I still get the feeling of not being satisfied with 1K-10K views and feel like it’s not enough yet. But now, I just decide to focus on people really appreciating my edit instead of just going for the likes and views.

everything you said here is SO TRUE, i literally edit like multiple fandoms so they all never do well bc i don't consistently edit one fandom, but every time i edit, i just want to like, improve, y'know? and i'm glad u're one of the reasons i do, i look back at my older edits and see I've improved massively and i don't really care much for the likes anymore, i just want ppl who i care for to like it, and if they do, i'm glad!

Thank you Lauren for this because it is so true what you were talking about and people definitely don’t talk about this side of running an account. I used to have a TikTok account with around 500k (not editing) and I remember feeling like I would always have this attention and it started dictating how I felt for any given day because I was too caught up in the numbers and not how the videos made me feel and if I liked them. And the one day my account was completely banned and I finally understood how it’s not here to stay and I shouldn’t seek my self worth in strangers on the internet.

I relate to this so much. I used to be an insanely popular editor in my country from 2018 to mid 2021 and then it crushed and now whenever I post I get max 5 likes. This made so unmotivated and now I edit every 3 to 4 months and just post it on a smaller account for my friends but I still kind of hope that it will blow up just a little bit. I went from being commonly known in my country’s community to a no one within 3 months and I cannot recover from that, but I still love editing nonetheless :’)
the same happened to me, but it was in a smaller scale, i wasnt that well known but my account was growing really quickly. it lasted around 2 months and it all came crashing down. i did stop editing for like a month coz of the lack of motivation and whenever i saw edits, i would just feel empty and upset. now i restarted editing and i dont care THAT much about likes and views now.

my style and your style are incredibly different but at some point i just started making edits for the fun and just going crazy with something different in every edit with excitement

The conclusion of this video according to me "nothing lasts forever". Your good time in editing wont last forever. Your bad time in editing won't last forever. Your followers wont last forever. Your fanpage wont last forever and even you won't last forever. So just try to cherish the little validation you get rather than being upset u got 100 likes as compared to last 500 likes u got. Be grateful for it :)

yesss, i love this podcast idea. i’m definitely someone that needs something in the background while editing/doing other things. also! i just started using ae a few days ago, you’re definitely one of the editors that inspired me to take that step and stop being kind of afraid of how “intimidating” the layout of after effects is. now i’m still kinda intimidated but i’m figuring it out and i’m genuinely proud of myself :))

I love this so much as an editor who was in the high for two years and one random day it went crumbling I felt i was losing everything because i would dedicate everything into editing for views. Later i went into hiatus and after i lost that account and i felt horrible but it was honestly a blessing in disguise after i told myself i wasn’t going to edit ever again but i missed it a lot. A few months later i opened a new account but on a different app (insta) and it didn’t start well but it didn’t bother me as much b4. Later i switched fandoms and i felt happier because it was something i had more interest it and now i’m getting a good amount of views and posting on my own time when i want instead of a planned time. Thanks for this talk it was very relatable and relaxing ❤
