This is a fanfic trailer I made for a fanfiction called A Touch Of Sin by Pettey. You can read it here:

Author’s summary: After his transfer to a quiet seaside town, Jeongguk was prepared to face a year of uneventful CID work, but found himself dealing with a series of strange murders instead.
I have so much to say about this author, she’s absolutely brilliant. And I’m not just talking about this one story, that I love to bits, but every single one I’ve read by her is incredibly well-written with complex characters and exciting dynamics and themes and perfect pace and structure, and very original settings, and the details always blow my mind... There is so much dedication and talent it’s unbelievable. I read this one comment from the author herself, which I think summarizes this fanfic perfectly, but also happens to reflects her writing style and her preferences (read over themes etc.): “Introspective and more screenplay-oriented than a straightforward linear procedural. It's about human condition, so it unfolds accordingly with that theme, through JJK as an unreliable narrator. It's ptsd and certain stigma, isolation, corruption, cultural repression, misplacement, dissociation, and painful process of trust; toxicity of confined communities; generational tensions and war guilt; human cruelty and the issue of how we perceive time and project our insecurities on others; coming to terms w/ self beyond the definitions that others are so inclined to put on you and use you as they see fit.” Yes, this is the type of quality reading you’re about to get if you give it a chance. These stories are the reason why I love being in this fandom. Thank you so so so much, Pettey, you’re one hell of a writer and a little bit crazy, but impossibly cool and I love ya and your thoughts and everything I get from your stories ;). I hope you like the trailer, I tried my best, promise.
As for the video, I gotta say, this was quite an experiment. It’s far from perfect, or the way I’d truly love to depict the story, since as usual I had to make some changes in certain scenes due to lack of usable BTS footage. But overall, I hope the message is there. The things I presented in the trailer were the ones that stood out to me throughout reading and which I found essential to character and relationship development. It’s edited purposely vague, so if you wanna understand exactly what’s going on in the trailer, pick up the story, will ya ;). And for those of you who like to read about the more technical details of my editing (since I always get messages about how to make storytelling videos) - I chose this instrumental composition (and I got chills the first time I heard it, let me tell you), because you can look at the fic through multiple lenses, but for me the overall feeling I got, especially close to the end, was hugely influenced by the supernatural. I’m not sure if the author would agree with this choice, since it’s not exactly ‘tribal’ music, but I went with what I imagined Jimin and his strange ‘aura’ to be like - almost inhumane, close to a Siren (Music name: Sirens of Pandora), and because it was Jimin who’s basically the guiding element and a huge influence for JK and also pretty much the reason he does what he does. Also, I wanted this video to be more of an auditory experience in general, visually too, but the auditory aspect was important for me to get right for sure. The author has this really vivid style of portraying scenes, and very vivid descriptions, so I aimed to reflect this fact in the video. Hence the 12 layers of sound effects (I’m not joking, I know you probably can’t tell, but trust me, I was close to flipping my shit), and this type of music (the singing voices esp.) was just perfect combining all sorts of sounds and blending (gun shots, machine gun shots + that techno music for dancing, police sirens and boat bell, seeping gas, Jimin singing + whale singing, ghost sounds, water sounds etc etc). I tried to depict that both JK an JM are very different, but yet a lot in common, hence the sort of linear storytelling, but switching the POVs both visually (e.g. through parallels) and through the voiceover. There are some double meanings. Obviously. Cuz no spoilers hopefully x).
Hope you like it, guys. Please, go give the author some love, she definitely deserves it ;)). And again, constructive criticism for the video welcomed ;).

I just wanted to let you know, in case you're not aware, but this type of thing can pay good money in the book industry. I used to work with a lot of indie authors, & that's they new thing now is for them to pay people to create movie trailers for their novels. They'll pay a pretty penny too. So if you ever wanted to consider, that could be a market you could go into & make money from. You're edits are far better than most of the ones I saw making the circuit in the indie book community too.

You know that actually is something I've always wondered about, because I was aware that there prob is a market for someone with my skills and interests, but I've never really looked into it. Can I ask, do you know how the whole process works then? Are there companies who specifically offer both the production (hiring actors, shooting the footage etc.) and then the whole post-production (editing footage, choosing music etc.) and all that for a reasonably good price for an indie author? I'd guess that a big problem would be that the cost for high-quality camera, good actors or HQ copyrighted music could be too high, so the company would have to settle on something less impressive to make the end meet? You know, in my case with fan editing I have a certain degree of freedom, since the footage I use comes from high-quality production, music as well. Or is that too simplified? Do the companies invest in HQ equipment and then still are able to offer a good price for an author? Any idea how much such authors might pay? Sorry, I have a lot of questions, but really any info at this point would be helpful. Thank you
Honestly, every author I know doesn't go w/a company. They're all self-made editors & set their own prices & honestly, none of them hire actors. They literally just use footage & stuff like you do in these. So if you ever wanted to get to the point of hire actors & the works, that'd give you an edge up, but it wouldn't be necessary at first honestly. As for the more detailed aspect, like figuring out what type of footage you can use & "sell" per se to an author & not get in trouble would be something you'd have to look into, because I have no idea. I was always on the buying end, not the production end of these edits. But I have seen some use footage from mainstream movies & stuff in sections to fit whatever plot the story has before. Whether they're supposed to or not, idk. But it's been in many of the trailers i've seen for authors before.

Yeah, the footage is the biggest problem, because obviously everything is copyrighted. I'm not well versed in law in this area, but I have a hard time believing what they did was strictly speaking legal. The footage might have been from official trailers I guess, which could be regarded differently under the law. But still, it sounds a little bit sketchy tbh :0. All in all, if I could actually make money off of this, I would do it. Making these sorts of edits are my absolute passion. But man, the legal stuff. I'd be scared shitless if I were to sell a product that could potentially lead to a lawsuit for CR infringement just to make the price more affordable for an author. Thank you for the info, though, I appreciate it :)!
Yeah, that's why if anything, you could charge more because the author wouldn't have to be worried about being drug into a lawsuit too. I figure there's most likely something out there like ShutterStock.com but for video clips. Shutter stock, & similar websites, are places where people, & a ton of authors, get cover photos. They're cheap, the only downside is that hundreds of people could buy the same photo & use it, but they can all be edited differently of course. I don't see why there wouldn't be something like that for video clips, you know? Buy many different clips for cheap & then use those & filler pieces, etc. It would be a place to start if there's a website for that stuff.
Sapphiamur just stopping by and i recently saw some videos where they were sponsored by a site called storyblocks/ video blocks and it apparently has clips/photos which can be used royalty free? i don't think that it'll be as impressive as some film footage but there's a 7 day free trial period so you can definitely check it out if you want to!
Like many of your other fanfic trailers, this one has rendered me speechless! It's sort of like reading the blurb/summary of a book and getting that thrill and excitement, the feeling of wanting to read that book except its actually visualised so that you can see the theme, idea, concept, etc. of the book.
You have an incredible talent for editing, and I love watching your edits :)

Now that I'm watching your trailer I can truly say that you got the "essence" of it and put it in a video, because wow.. that sums it up so well. I'm reading this rn because of your trailer. Idk how you did it, but you managed to capture that uneasy eery ambiance that is woven through the beautiful prose of the entire story. Even in the most mundane of scenes, nothing feels quite right. And you're never sure what is real. You perfectly captured the mystery. And Jimin's voice at the end! So haunting! I literally got CHILLS down my spine. This trailer is absolutely just as stunning as the fic, a true piece of art. Idk how many times I've rewatched it. I'm currently on chapter 7 and I can't wait to finish, but also am dreading it because I know it's absolutely going to destroy me. Like that line, "long time no see" and "black water pulled me down" that you incorporated here just made me so emotional. I just know I'm gonna cry.
