      Does taffy 3 qualify? The American side had destroyers and escort carriers against several battleships and cruisers and more destroyers than the USN had ships and still tired the Japanese navy back but predictably lost most of the destroyers and a few of the carriers or is it just a last stand that actually worked?

      First video on this channel I've seen and its very underwhelming to be honest. Couldn't get past Borodino part, as it was just regurgitated standard narrative garbage. Ooooh, the battle, aaaaah the retreat. And no mention that the French suffered most of their losses on the way TO Moscow and just half a sentence on a completely screwed up logistics of the invasion. Almost 40% of the whole French army and over 50% of the actual losses occurred BEFORE Borodino, through hunger, decease and desertion. Out of nearly 700.000 strong invasion force less than 200.000 took part in the battle on the French side. Partially due to some parts of the army unable to join the main force in time, but largely due to casualties already suffered. Yet the video's author repeats the simplest of narratives that is too outdated for Wikipedia even. Invasion was lost before it began due to underestimation of the logistical challenges involved, but the author needs Borodino to be the decisive factor, so he bends the facts to fit his narrative. Presentation is nice, but the content is questionable.

    I wonder if Chancellorsville would count! Lee's greatest victory, but, he lost a horrible amount of men in his understrength attacks, plus Stonewall Jackson..I have also heard that Lee himself suffered a minor stroke as the battle was much more closely fought than is given credit.....and that led to a certain indecisiveness at Gettysburg.

    • @williewonka6694
      @williewonka6694 Рік тому +1

      Confederate assults and the invasions certainly lead to losses that could not be sustained. Additionally, Gettysburg, Antietam and Franklin are examples of overwhelming Confederate losses resulting from attacks. Confederate General Johnson lead the defense of the west by preserving the army as long as possible, by trading land for time. Jefferson Davis tired of that strategy, and replaced him with the hyper aggressive Hood, who promptly destroyed the army at Franklin through repeated assults against overwhelming odds.

    • @mglenn7092
      @mglenn7092 Рік тому +1

      I’m not so sure that the problem at Gettysburg was “indecisiveness” - rather, General Lee was too determined to keep fighting, to keep seeking victory, when he should have retreated after the 2nd day, instead of continuing to attack on the 3rd day at Gettysburg. Continuing to fight after the 1st day might have been a mistake too - perhaps Lee should have pulled back and looked for ways around the Army of the Potomac, instead of throwing his troops at the Army of the Potomac on day 2. Lack of reliable intelligence may well excuse Lee’s mistakes (if there were any notable ones) on the first 2 days, but he had to know the score on the morning of the 3rd day, and he still ordered that infamous charge anyway…

    • @williewonka6694

      @@mglenn7092 Day 2 might have been successful for the confederates, had the advances of the rebel right and left flanks been coordinated. The attack by Longstreet was delayed, yet was nearly successful in flanking the Federals at Little Roundtop. Had the rebels arrived there hours sooner, things might have turned out differently.

    One of the most fascinating (at least in my opinion) aspects of military history is all the "what ifs" that you can find. Some times a simple flanking maneuver from 1 side could have made a battle go totally favorable for them instead of it being a disaster, other times its making a split second choice in tactics on the fly which turns what was going to be a defeat into an unexpected victory.Of course then there is all the potential alternate histories that can spring forth when one envisions a battle play out differently then it did historically.
    It mind blowing to think that at some point in history someone simply saying "march right" ended up setting a chain of events in motion that helped form the world we know today.

    • @iansneddon2956
      @iansneddon2956 Рік тому +5

      Yes. Take the battle of Midway. If the USN code breakers were unable to learn the target, would the US carriers have been already at sea. Nagumo wasn't stupid in re-arming his planes. He was coming under repeated air attacks from planes from Midway which would continuously tell the US Fleet where he was and would be disrupting his flight operations while he was trying to engage the American carriers. It was reasonable to expect that the element of surprise would give him time to deal with Midway first before a US fleet steaming from Hawaii would reach him. If he had knocked out Midway and was able to locate the US carriers before they located him it would have been a different battle and people might have been talking about Nagumo's brilliance.
      Or just take the situational awareness of Dick Best, realizing that another squadron was attacking the Japanese carrier he was supposed to attack, he pulled out and took three other dive bombers to attack the other squadron's target. Akagi. Without this quick thinking there would have been the air wings from two Japanese carriers launching the counterattack and this might have been enough for Japan to win (taking out Yorktown in the first counterattack, and another carrier in the second).
      I'm glad USA won this battle. I am just struck how the Japanese plans might have worked.

    2 things that weren't mentioned about Napoleon's downfall:
    1. The Russian Cossacks constantly destroyed and looted Napoleon's supply lines, leaving his army without provisions from his territory. Because of the scorched earth tactics, Napoleon also couldn't live off of the land.
    2. The summer Napoleon decided to invade in was abnormally hot. In the summer, Russia becomes a land of bogs and marshes, perfect conditions for disease to spread if warm. Napoleon's army lost a majority of its fighting capability due to disease; the winter just finished them off later on. The winter is more famous because of the fact that Napoleon basically abandoned his camp followers who were not as affected by the disease or battles. Also, Hitler's invasion accentuated Napoleon's failed invasion.

      @@kaihiggins725 I think Napoleon wasn't planning on staying, only bringing the Russians in line with his Continental system.
      Hitler was planning on a German occupation, but the problem was being over-optimistic that they could defeat USSR in four months. The limited German supply chain was geared to supplying the army enough to achieve this victory. It could then transport the several hundred thousand sets of winter clothing stockpiled for the occupation. But with fighting still going on with the related demand for resupply, they were stuck. (1) not enough winter clothing for everyone, and (2) limited transportation capacity (Food, ammunition, winter clothing.... pick two!)

    Actually by per cent-age of population, the 30 years war was more destructive than WW I OR WW II.
    I sat this according to a book that explored violence through human history, including death tolls and how they ranked as a percentage of human population. He concluded that violence has been steadily decreasing as civilization spread and evolved. Not only that, but the genocide during WW II though terrible and which should never be re-conceived and allowed to go forward, was not new. In fact, many mass genocides have occurred through history.
    Here is the book by Steven Pinker: The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined.
    I recommend it, if you are interested in the topics I mentioned above.

      Building a fleet wouldn't help without experienced sailors. The French had killed a lot of the more experienced naval officers during then Revolution, prior to that they had been in par with the British. Then the British used the tactic of blockading the French ships keeping them bottled up in port. Its actually hard to do that with the ships of the time and the result was the British crews becoming very experienced while the French were doing nothing. The British also encouraged their captains to use their initiative since they could trust them more. Before Trafalgar the French had a pretty good idea what the British plan would be but couldn't effectively counter it due to the quality of the French and Spanish crews. Building another fleet without finding a way of addressing this seems unlikely be a good strategy. Plus Napoleon repeatedly showed he had a poor understanding of Naval warfare but insisted on giving direct orders.

      @@trevorprinz7805 Pyrrhus invaded Rome in 280-275 BCE from Epirus, which is in western Greece, and he destroyed a series of Roman armies in several major engagements, assuming that by crushing their forces in the field he'd force the Roman Senate to negotiate with him. But they refused any negotiation whatsoever while his troops remained on Italian soil, and they just raised new Legions to face him. Each battle he won against the Romans was so costly that, while he was never technically defeated by them, he ultimately had to retreat back to Greece because they could sustain these absurd casualty levels and get replacement troops, and Pyrrhus just couldn't replace his losses.
      As Red Star Legion pointed out, there is an anecdote where one of Pyrrhus' generals was congratulating him on his great victory over the Romans, and he responded with a line along the lines of "Another victory like that, and we are finished."
      Pyrrhus is considered to be one of the greatest generals in Antiquity though, given that he won nearly every conflict in which he took part against anyone other than the Romans, and displayed a level of battlefield tactical understanding that astounded his contemporaries. When talking about the skill of Ancient generals, a common ranking is to put Alexander the Great first, Hannibal of Carthage second, and Pyrrhus of Epirus third.
