I’ve been thinking that one way to look at all of this is that once Claudius brought instability to the crown by poisoning his brother, it was inevitable for the whole system to collapse. Yes, young Hamlet starts off as a hero and ends as a villain/murderer, but wasn’t it all set into motion by Claudius?
Maybe it’s a comment on the fragility of monarchies, on how, regardless of all the power and wealth they hold, they are actually very weak. Once poison enters the system (starting w old hamlet being poisoned), it can never leave until all involved perish.
Idk. Not sure if people suggested that before. Hamlet should still be held accountable for his actions and is a complete hypocrite to do what he does to Ophelia, to Polonius, to Laertes, to R & G etc.
I will go back and watch the videos from the other acts. Thanks so much! ❤

Thanks a lot for your series - going through every scene of this great play, where you share lots of insight, reflections and ideas!
Branagh's movie some twenty years ago made a huge impact on me and I regarded then this as "the only good movie ever made" :-)
Not having an English background (I'm rather of Fortinbras' descendance), I have learnt to love Shakespeare's play as a grown-up, and I find it so fascinating to read and listen to people with so much knowledge combined with reflections around his plays.
Especially interesting has it been to listen to your - a young woman's - reflections around the various characters in this play. You have given so many more ideas and much more understanding of Hamlet's (and the other character's) personality than anything else I have read.
Your students must be proud :-)

I really like the way you came up with your own theories along the way and explained the most important parts...I can see why you became a teacher! Thanks again!!!

Around 6ish minutes when talking about the possible meanings for "foil," couldn't it also be to foil one's plan? Like how Hamlet fighting and then winning against Laertes ruins his plans? He foils the plan.

Love the scene by scene interpretation but the interpretation of Hamlet's character is very weak. He dislikes Polonius is because Polonius is the associate and advisor of an evil person. The interpretation of Hamlet's character does not take into account how perturbed he is by the royal intrigue
