  • Today I spoke with David Fitzgerald, a renowned atheist activist, historical researcher, and novelist whose books have been pivotal for the deconstructing community as we work to understand the origins and evolution of Christianity.
We touched on many topics, including:
    • The inspiration behind studying mythicism, which challenges the historical existence of Jesus and other religious figures.
    • The various patterns seen across different religions.
    • The inconsistencies between the Gospels and how they depict various versions of Jesus.
    • Uncovering common mythological elements across religions, including parallels between figures like Jesus, Buddha, and Muhammad.
    • The influence of Zoroastrianism on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
    • Recent archaeological and scholarly discoveries challenge the conventional timelines of the Old Testament's origins.
    • Understanding that religion is an evolutionary process shaped by historical and political factors.
    • The influence of Egyptian, Babylonian, and Persian traditions on Jewish scriptures.
    • How early Christian figures like Paul had differing visions for the religion, contributing to its diversity.
    • How religious leaders manipulated Christianity to shape beliefs and control narratives.
    • How understanding the origins and evolution of religion can aid in healing from religious trauma.
Many thanks to David for sharing his story and insights!

I love listening to David Fitzgerald, his book “Nailed” was one of the reasons that made me look into the evidence they say we had for Jesus. What he shares and the amount of research he’s done is simply amazing. Thanks for this interview Tim!! Video gold

I suspect that the reason why many scholars, specifically non-believing academics, don't want to think about, look into, or accept the idea that Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, Buddha, etc, either didn't exist or were nothing like the accepted stories is because it's a bridge too far. It ventures into the potential realm of offense.
It's one thing to discount the supernatural aspects of the stories and beliefs, it's something altogether different to say either this person was nothing like what's described or was a complete fiction.
Western, non Muslim scholars studying Islam have feared for their life for presenting such an idea that Mohammad was either a mishmash of a couple people or a complete fiction.

I've taught a few Zoroastrians, who were surprised that I had heard of their belief system (which has great respect for dogs), but, a few years ago, in an episode of "The Simpsons", Millhouse mentioned it to Bart, re the god's name being Uhura Mazda, but didn't mention anything else.
Re masculine gods, a senior US military psychologist did some research, and discovered that societies with more masculine gods were always more violent societies.
Even as a little kid, calling god by the male pronoun just sounded so very wrong.

Wow! Great video conversation. Thank for the effort you put forth here and your questions, Tim. Many of us may have some intuitive sense about David's viewpoint, but it is terrific to hear the expanded version with supporting facts. Interesting to consider that human history and philosophy are all evolutionary too, not just the science of organic life. Seems so obvious, but filling in the blanks on how it happened was difficult to figure out. After hearing this video, many questions answered. Thank you!

Good mention of Zoroastrianism! I'm comparing the name "Abraham" and the name "Ahura Mazda" and I'm realizing that "Abraham" could be derived from "Ahura Mazda"!
    Ahura Mazda ---> Ahura M. ---> Ahuram ---> Ahvram ---> Avram ---> Avraham ---> Abraham

An interesting thought i had recently is that… if you remove the religious context from bible stories (adam and eve, noah, david and goliath, etc) these stories clearly have the texture of fairy tales

I take issue with the idea that Daoism is the same as Buddhism. There may be common ancient cultural roots, but the fundamental philosophies are very different.

Ran out and got Vol. II of Playing God after hearing him mention it elsewhere. (Already devoured Nailed and Mything in Action months ago.) David was my introduction to mythicism on a call in show with Traci years ago.

It’s refreshing to hear from someone who didn’t fall down the rabbit hole like me; someone for whom it’s all just interesting and kinda fun to look at. Listening today I wished that the canon of scripture had never been formed. Would fundamentalism have gotten off the ground if the Gospel of Peter been kept with its depiction of the Cross of Christ speaking as Jesus carried it having risen again? In light of this the formation of the canon is a more calumnious affair in as much as it sought to abet passing off this religion as based in historical fact.

There should be a magnum opus about the “evolution of abrahamic mythology and religion”. I am sure it will be best-seller but also the most criticized book among Abrahamic circles lol cause this is revolutionary i think!

Is the zodiac really a set of twelve - and only twelve - INDIVIDUAL star clusters or did the ancients just PERCEIVED this division (i.e., they could have just have easily "seen" 11 or 13 or any number you want)? I know that what stars seem as adjacent are only that way as seen from the view point of earth.
I am amazed at how they could see say 10 stars and imagine it represents a complex design when often some of the stars appear to be peppered into their imaginary design. More like someone shot buckshot at a drawing and then claim the buckshot by themselves produce an image. Like someone could claim there are only 8 signs, with signs for Snow White, Dopey, Grumpy, and so on.

    Great interview.
I don't think he ever answered you about a possible reason for patriarchy to take over all the religions. He kept going to the origins of monotheism, and I do think those are connected. But hypothetically, it would have been possible to have a monotheistic deity that was female. (I've known even a few pagans who adopted that view for themselves.) Yet it never happened on any scale in human history. I suspect that the chances were lower because the most primal thing one can say about the female sex is that it makes babies. So it's inherently relational. Madonna and child images, the Isis and Osiris images they came from, and pregnant women images -- these all include both genders by their nature. If you're going to divorce a deity from all the rest of the universe and divorce one gender into superiority over the other, it's probably going to be the male gender.
Also, of course, it tended to be males who set themselves up in power over others at the top of a hierarchy. Men participate in war and violence more often than women, and very few people who violently seize power are going to tolerate worship of a monotheistic deity of the opposite gender. The person at the top wants to be the representation of the most high deity on earth.

It is often the women who are encouraging the fighting - both in situations with individual people and at societal level. The white feather movement is one example. And the wives of male conquerors

Literal interperpetration of the bible didn't come to full fruition until the protestant reformation and th enlightenment. Christian docrine and theology is mainly based on allegorical readings of the bible.

Forgot what part of the video it was because I was listening pretty intently and now I gotta go back a lot and listen to it again just to find it....... But you said something about faith being a blessing from God and that if you don't have faith that God didn't bless you with it and that was honestly my biggest problem with the Bible.
One of the biggest problems for me was the passage where it talks about pharaoh's heart being hardened by God himself that way he may not enter the Kingdom of God and he can make a point to the jews that God was really for them and no 1 else 😂
And then they want to say God is not a regional God and he cares about everybody which is hilarious because Judaism and Christianity were a fairly local religion for a very long time. It makes you think if this religion was real then how come God somehow wasn't able to talk to the other side of the world at the same time 😂
Archaeologically there are many tribes that have evidence of things being found around the time the global flood was supposed to have biblically happened too which is funny to me.
