This battle between Hercules and Ares is the first of many epic battles that the 2 half-brothers would have with each other. In this first battle, it shows that even with his great strength, Hercules could still have trouble fighting against the Olympians, but Hercules usually finds a way to prevail.
@@b.y.o.p.9035 next to Hera, Ares has a strong hatred and rivalry with Hercules in this franchise due to jealousy. It makes sense for Hercules and Ares to fight each other as often as they did in the series, and they had epic battles.
@@StareachValcin Absolutely right, and there were definitely strong jealous feelings that Ares had towards Hercules. I remember in the Xena episode of God Fearing Child when Ares basically asked Zeus if he could kill Hercules because of the "prophecy". The conversation went something of this nature: Zeus- "You're asking me permission to kill my own son?!" Ares- "WHAT IS IT ABOUT HIM THAT YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN IN ME?!!" To which Zeus replied in a more calm manner that it wasn't just about Ares, but all the Gods. He pointed out how Hercules had managed to win the Mortal's trust and support without having them worship him like the Gods require. That was one of my favorite Xena episodes, because it just showed how angry Ares was towards Hercules, and also the many other crazy events that took part in that episode. Sorry for the long explanation. 😊
@@b.y.o.p.9035 it's a fine explanation. That Xena episode is one of my personal favorites, as well as the final Hercules and Xena crossover episode. Ironic that Xena got her appearance in the Hercules series and Hercules got his final appearance in the Xena series. Another strange point is that when Zeus died, Ares never gets rid of Hercules. It just shows that even without protection from Zeus, Hercules can still handle Ares on his own.
@@StareachValcin Yes, definitely a favorite episode for sure. And you're right too: that was Hercules' last appearance. I loved the interaction between he and Gabrielle about noticing each others "haircut". Just made me smile seeing that because that was the one and only time he had shorter hair. Zeus dying was something, and Ares not getting rid of Hercules afterwards was interesting. Like you said, he can handle Ares.
Oh man. Looking back at the fight now, that was hilarious. Still, Atalanta made up for everything. The best thing I remember was that heroic background music at 5:58 when Tidus threw Hercules the sword. It was featured in a few more episodes too. Love that. Just made me want to root for Hercules when they started playing it. Thanks for the video. 🙂
Kevin Smith’s Ares actually made his first appearance during S1 of Xena; presumably they liked him so much (easy to see why) that they decided to “borrow” him for Hercules; he first appeared on HTLJ during the storyline with the golden hind
I thought at first he appeared in person as Ares in Xena, but his actual very first appearance was in Hercules when he appeared as Iphicles. It was later on that they brought him back as Ares for Xena. Just a little information for those of us who believed he appeared as Ares first.
Its amazing the way Ares was portrayed by both series. More comedy in Hercules and more serious in Xena, but still played by the same actor. Pretty cool, really.
as much as I enjoy the actor who played Aries in the series later on, I do enjoy Aries here. ALmost as a force of nature/chaos. It was creepy AF as a child when I saw this movie. the boiling blood, in a skull fountain, the skull in the moon and that weird Golem thing, the deep voice.....purely evil and unsettling (atleast when I was a kid) the actor was almost too charming and funny to be taken as a liable threat (kind of how Loki is in the MCU)
Bizarre as it is, I kinda like the form Ares manifests in. But not as much as I like seeing Herc and Atalanta teaming up. Also, seeing Atalanta at all. Plus, the twit general Ares recruited gets killed, by Ares himself. Oh, and we see the key to Hercules escaping the roots binding him: he just breaks ‘em. 😆 Awesome.
Yeah, Atalanta was probably the best thing for me about this episode. You're right, too. The General of Ares was such a wimp. "Ares, help me! Hercules is here!" 😅
Perhaps you could think of it as some kind of a construct that Ares makes because he doesn't think Hercules is worth fighting directly at that time. He changes his mind about the time Kevin Smith starts playing him.
This is a great episode in general the Ares fight scene was kinda bad cg but luckily Kevin Smith Ares was the very best final form this character could have been given.
Kevin Smiths Ares makes in Hercules in Season 3 his first Appearence. In the Serena Storyline. I found this kind of Ares also cool. Exept as child they made a good Actiontoy of Ares. But Kevin Smiths Performance is much better.
Kevin was great as Ares, but they did not cast him in the role until Season 3 of Hercules/Season 2 of Xena for a plot where they needed Ares to look like a person and not this thing. They might not have even known him yet when they made this.
Ares just broke Zeus's protection decree that no olympian god should actually try and kill Hercules in person and still Zeus still does nothing to Ares.
Hercules: "You haven't gotten any better looking, that's for sure."
Ares: *turns into Kevin Smith*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Sometimes a "like" is not enough.
Great comment.
Watching Kevin Smith play him later on makes it look like Ares was just trolling Hercules with that giant outfit.
That outfit was so lame in this scene 😂

Hercules, Sindbad and Alif Alyla.

He was also Hercules’ brother on his mother side of the family.
@@MrMharris1990 yes he was, Iphicles...no facial hair when he played him though

Ares was never this dramatic with Xena 🤣
For obvious reasons lol 😂
She'd make fun of him for being extra

Because xena was secretly in love with ares but was to stubborn to say anything and ares obviously loved xena
@@b.y.o.p.9035, it was played by the same actor?? Strange that Aries is different in this episode than in Xena.
Every episode of this show was EPIC! The ancient myths are made real! There has never been another show like it.

Perhaps you could think of it as some kind of a construct that Ares makes because he doesn't think Hercules is worth fighting directly at that time. He changes his mind about the time Kevin Smith starts playing him.
Ares looks like a fucking power villains ranger in hindsight. The way he explodes, the little "I'll get you next time!" lmfao

Never understood why the opening of the series presented Hera as the show's main antagonist instead of Ares.

Area is my favorite god, esp played by Kevin smith. Any other hollywood deities and gods in movies can't match his performance
"I hate my family." 😂😂😂😂
that was fun. I should go find my DVDs
Iphicles actor (Kevin Smith)was taller in the beginning of the series
I always wondered why Kevin Smith wasn't Ares in this episode.
They initially intended not to show gods “in person” aside from Zeus, although that policy didn’t last long.
@@LordHyena I'm glad they didn't keep it that way.

Remember, folks: Ares is potentially Xena's father. Imagine if we had gotten _this guy_ instead of Kevin Smith.
I always felt they tended to use both Hercules and Xena to try things out and see which version the audience preferred and then stuck with that idea
That's what I keep saying in another comment.
Remember that time when Hercules beat up a bunch of kids?
His costume makes me think they ran out of money, but had a load of spare props lying around
Ouch. 😁

Getting a lot of use out of that cranberry juice.
Aries is a tree and a witch: that spirit is unlawful: all Aries has trapped in trees: man, woman, Indian or animal: unlawful: null and void.
So this is where Ares from "Xena" was first seen.
Ares’ first episode was the previous one, “The Festival if Dionysus.” He appeared as a disembodied entity and in the body of one of his worshippers.
@@LordHyena Ah. I have no idea Ares appeared before. I'd mostly seen him on "Xena" where the titled character had a love/hate relationship with him.

But was there a 'next time'?
