Looks great and nice work Jeff. Just a word of caution though, bring the kitty in at night because the coyotes can eat through that 23 gauge chicken wire no problem. Just thought I'd mention that. You folks seem like really nice people who love your family and your animals too. We need more people like you!
Aww thanks for the sweet comment! So far we haven’t had any trouble with coyotes in almost 2 years 🙌 we also have a 6 foot fence that goes around the property and a very large dog too lol I think the coyotes are scared to hop the fence 😹
I live in Phoenix Arizona (in the city with houses everywhere) and we have coyotes, bobcats, owls, hawks, etc, etc, etc, and I would NOT use chicken wire like that, if I wanted my cats safe from predators. I have a 6 foot wall, 2 pitbulls, a German Shepherd, and would never underestimate coyotes. My animals are all locked inside at night. We've had neighbors have 2 coyotes jump their 6 foot wall, kill their Rottweiler, and drag him off. It's only a matter of time before the trickster coyotes get yours, UNLESS you change that chicken wire to at least a 14 guage, 10 would be better tho. You are putting your cats at risk, and your big dog. I've lived here since 1991, all over the valley, and it's dangerous in the city. You look like you're in the desert, with abundant wildlife. Please reconsider that cheap-ass chicken wire.
Thank you so much!! This is exactly what we want to make after seeing your catio. With 4 cats and a busy road outside this will be perfect! Appreciate you sharing.
Great job on the catio. I would suggest putting some artificial turf on the ground, add a few more perches for her and some chairs for the humans. It's been a while since you built it so you may have already done these things. Cheers.
well done! I love anyone who loves cats. Always check the security of the inclosure often though because wild animals are very inginuetive and may find a way inside eventually.
Looks great! I wish you would of showed the list of materials needed though... a lot of people would love to do this but don’t have a nice handy guy available
A woman could achieve this, too... I’m going to make an epic cat run that starts from my back door and ends in a nice shaded area 20metres up the backyard.
It's a nice concept but unless you buried the wire 2 feet into the dirt the coyotes will just dig under and feast. I would also consider a low voltage wire run around the base as a deterrant. Cats love being up high so lots of platforms is better. I like to hang canvas squares on a box frame up for them to chill in. You should also think about a cat cam so you see what sort of mischief they might try.
Love the suggestions, thanks! We’ve had the catio up for over a year and still no problem with coyotes, I think it helps that our property has a 6 foot fence around it but I’m not sure. I would love to put a camera out there!
To piggy back off of this comment… I’ve learned the hard way that “chicken wire” is only good for one thing…. Keeping chickens in. My entire flock was massacred by raccoons who reached in and grabbed my chickens through chicken wire and then gnawed their necks off. I’ve remodeled that coop to have 1/2” hardware cloth and have done 2 more coops this way. If you have coyotes you most definitely have raccoons too. Cats might be more agile and able to get away from reach more easily. Though chicken wire is much less expensive, in the long run hardware cloth will save you heartbreak. Love the catio though!
What would you think about a catwalk across the front that goes all the way across just above the door. I built one and used a pair of cedar fence boards for the platform and ramp. They love the idea of levels so the more the merrier.
Its huge but it needs lots of shelves and ramps, places to climb and lay out ... a couple of trees and a scratchers...why make it so tall if you don't utilize the space...
Looks great! We're starting something similar in the next few weeks. Any tips or advice would be appreciated lol. I keep going back and forth whether or not to have a roof. And my husband wants the whole thing on pavement. I want part of it to be on bare grass but my husband is worried about predators.
We haven’t had any trouble with predators! I think our cats definitely enjoy the bare ground! Good luck with your build! Lmk if you have any questions!
I know this was a year or so ago, but how much did everything cost if you don't mind me asking? My fiance is not a handy man, so i will most likely be building it myself 😅. We don't have cyotes but do have other predators in the Pacific northwest, and will definitely need a roof. Nice job you guys!
I was going to use chicken wire but found out we gave coyotes and foxes running near our neighborhood. So Im ordering 14 gauge vinyl coated or pvc coated wire, im not sure which would be better?
Did you level your ground? Or were the rocks used to fill in the gaps? We were thinking that we would need to level a few inches, but after watching this I realize we might not have to!
The ground was already pretty level when we started! There were a couple spots we had to smooth out tho so the 2 by 4 would lay flat. The rocks were more to make it look cool lol
@@thecloudninefamily788 thank you for your reply! We took a good look at our backyard and decided we might actually be able to cat proof the while thing :) .
Just wondering how the chicken wire has held up....and if any coyotes have tested it, and if they managed to tear it up or it held up. I've got to make something for my cats, and there are coyotes here as well.
So far it’s held up great! No issues so far, we do have a 6 foot chain link perimeter fence that helps keep out the coyotes and also a very large dog lol
I love this! i know it was two years ago and i have no idea what it looks like now but maybe adding some shelves to the frame for the cat to have a high viewpoint to the outside? Anyway, its amazing!

@@thecloudninefamily788 that doesn't mean you won't. Why take chances with your beloved cats???!!!! Chicken wire is for keeping chickens IN, NOT keeping predators out. Please reconsider ❤️
Also, I put wire on the ground so animals can't dig under the catio, and get my cats. I put a foot and a half on the exterior, and a half foot on the inside, so nobody gets in, and my cats can't dig out. I used 12" sod staples to secure it. No predators can dig in that way.
@energeticsoulhealer888 Are your cats as stupid as you are? I've read about 6 comments on this video where you just repeat the same shit over and over. We get it lady, you're terrified of life. Get therapy. She has said over and over here that the cats have a cat door. They will be inside long before a coyote or anything else digs or chews it's way in, unless again, they're only as smart as you. Thankfully animals have common sense, unlike a lot of people commenting on UA-cam videos
Nothing better than a handy man. Seriously. And one that will build a catio!

We did add some more shelves and a home made scratching post recently! I should do an update 😃

its awesome big and spacious the only thing it needs is the climbers, toys and the green fake grass. so nice i love it.

This is the most helpful video I’ve seen to date.
Thanks! 🙌
This is amazing!!! Watching this gave me some great ideas for the catio i am wanting to build.
That’s awesome!! Glad you found some inspiration from our video!
wow. this is great. im going to guess your next move was to improve the inside with cart ramps and nooks and porches, etc.
Yes! Since then we’ve added some shelves, a little nook and a scratching post. They spend a lot of time out there so they must love it!
Thank you guys making this great video.!

This is so awsome!!. Btw, any advice on how to care for kittens? Im adopting one in 2 weeks 😊
Lots of cuddles and snuggles when they’re little! The more you handle them as babies, the friendlier they will be! Congratulations!! 🥰
What gauge and type of wire mesh? Galvanized? Coated? Chicken wire isn't strong.
We used chicken wire and so far it’s holding up fine!

No I haven’t seen them climb it. They mostly just sit out on the shelves. 🥰

Absolutely love your solution (build). See our build at Karin and Larry at Home. Take care and thank you. Larry

Not sure the exact cost but I would estimate around $500
