  • We swapped out the clipping diodes from our DB-1 Pedal Kit and installed a Nanolog N2 Device to see how it would sound. So far, pleased with the results! For more info on Nanolog Audio's technology or to buy some devices for your own design use, check out our website:

This DB-1 Distortion/Boost Pedal Kit by Next Gen Musical Ltd. is a boost pedal at its core that can also be made into a 70's style distortion pedal. It includes the instructions and parts for both configurations, as well as some advanced distortion modding discussion to help you better understand certain parts of the circuit and how to modify them to your needs. The circuit was originally designed by Tom Freeman of Tom Freeman Audio Effects, a Canadian pedal maker.

You guys should do another video where you A/B the pedal before and after you switch out the components. Would love to hear the difference.

Yes, very nice! I will need to get my paws on some of these.

Definitely be including one of these in my next order. I wanna see what it does to my DS1

Ooooh, that could be interesting. I'd have to look at the schematic again, but if memory serves, the DS1 uses some pretty hard clipping diodes. These would certainly smooth/round out the clipping for a much tasteful result. We have a DS1 at work. I'll have to crack it open and take a look when I get the chance.

@@NextGenGuitars exactly why I wanna try the mid level chip. Something to tone it down. I like the DS1 for the treble boost it naturally has, but the gain gets a little... much. That said, the high gain chip could also be fun in my SD1.

Sounds decent, though as the other Mark notes, it would help to have an A/B comparison.

We'll do that in a future video.

@@NextGenGuitars Looking forward to it. I suspect one of the things that impedes purchase of these devices is that we only ever get to hear pedals designed around them, and rarely hear the difference between a pedal that relies on garden-variety silicon diodes and the same circuit and settings with these Nanolog devices.
If you can, install a toggle in a DB-1 pedal to flip between silicon and Nanolog, so that a person can hear the difference without changing ANYTHING about the control settings. And if the Nanolog alters the output level in some way, that's worth hearing as well.

@Mark Hammer That would probably be an ideal scenario. Nanolog does have a short demo on their channel with exactly that setup here:
      ua-cam.com/video/5op2cPMeDWw/v-deo.html
He switches between silicon, N1 (still in development), and the N2 version. Not a comprehensive demo/comparison, but a very quick comparison. I would pay particular note to the changes you hear between the N2 (at 0:38) and when he goes back to silicon (at 0:49).
We'll get our own A/B demo going next chance I get to mod the pedal again.
