Theon failed literally every single speech check possible 😭 gosh darn.
To be fair to Theon, if my grandma started talking about how she hooked up with some Prince, I would absolutely pull up a chair
Blue Tooth can issue orders to his crew wirelessly.
Aragorn hasn't been in Gondor for decades, true, but unlike Theon he has lived there for a significant time as an adult and knows the culture, even personally knows many of the important people.
I think the way Theon is welcomed into his "homeland" here might reflect how Westeros might eventually welcome Dany. They both claim this birthright over a land where they haven't set foot in 10 years, and they come in with the foreign culture they're used to, which is Northern for Theon and Free Cities/Dothraki/Slavers bay for Dany. I don't think the people of Westeros are gonna give the warm welcome Dany is expecting.
Some places more than others, Westeros isn’t exactly uniform and it’s becoming progressively more fractious as the saga proceeds. I think it’s being foreshadowed pretty heavily that Crackclaw Point would throw in behind her, what with them basically being de-facto independent since the Targs were ousted, their history of deference to specifically a dragon princess instead of a dragon lord (hinting they’d prefer one over the other), and the not exactly subtle quote from Nimble Dick “We’re all good dragon folk up Crackclaw way.” It would also help those Brienne chapters mean something in the larger context of the story, since a common complaint people seem to have is that they’re pointless to the plot. (I don’t agree, but whatever)
But uh... a bunch of scraggly Pineys isn’t exactly an ironclad power base so I think you’re absolutely right, especially with the most recent armed conflict going on in the area. She might be able to yield some sway in the Riverlands since R’hllor is on the rise there and the Rollies seem to generally dig her style. It wouldn’t be a bloodbath if she didn’t have SOME local muscle on her side, and it’s absolutely going to be a bloodbath.
I really love this comparison, especially because both Dany and Theon both have rivals in positions that put them in such severe disadvantages. Theon with Asha, Dany with the Lannisters. But they also both have even more powerful enemies from the outside, Euron and Young Griff.
Because Young Griff is just kind of a dude, I'm guessing HE'S the one being compared to Theon, and Dany is the actual comparison to Euron... foreshadowing her "turning" evil when that's very clearly her plot thread from the beginning.
True, although the ironborn aren't exactly representative of westeros as a whole, plus already had a secure leader..but targs have a very well established base already and people are tired of this experiment with baratheon/lannisters
With westeros as fractured as it is, and nobody liking cersei, it would be pretty easy for her to gather everyone wanting a return to the old status quo. Plus she has dragons.
Where fAegon fits into it is where things might split
Also Ian Mcshane did have a slight point, I've been following the series for almost 20 years, but the whole spoiler culture is a really recent development, last 7/8 years tops, Snape kills dumbledore and sixth sense were kind of the only real blips and otherwise no one really cared about hearing details, spoiling the ending was the only real thing to avoid, other than that it doesn't affect your enjoyment at all
"You know what this story could use more of? Incest."
- GRRM, probably
If ever there was a chapter that represented ACOK, this would be it 😂
Early Theon makes me cringe so hard. And I know that word is overused on the internet but my shoulders literally do recoil away from the words I'm reading every time I read it.
Love theons pov in the clash of Kings, his thought process is brilliant and funny and tragic.
That feeling when you missed the live stream but know that a perfect gift is waiting for you in the new year.
The whole chapter is filled with irony. You get it? Iron-y….
Props to Schwift for mustering any sympathy for that "How dare you?" Theon guy in his first chapters. He might work off of false information when it comes to his position on the Iron Islands but he was an entitled prince boy all along, just walking over people expecting them to kiss his feet for that. A troubled upbringing may explain but not excuse it, in my opinion.
What the show did to the Ironborn is just sad. They're one of my favorite factions in the books and in the show all their scenes are just so miserable in comparison. All Damphair, no Aeron!
Balon was really just gonna go full-Barbarossa on the North? I forgot that was a thing, and it’s almost verging on plothole with what we learn about the Ironborn in later books and the competing visions for their future. I always assumed Balon never planned to hold the North for any length of time, because it’s just a really dumb idea with winter on its way and the impossibility of defending the Iron Islands while also effectively holding the North - kinda like Japan trying to occupy China and SE Asia while the Western Allies go island hopping toward Japan proper.
Tbh, Euron might’ve accidentally done some good by having Balon yeeted off that bridge. At the very least the Ironborn made more of a lateral movement towards eventual ruin under the new leadership.
That was the whole point of removing Theon from the Iron Islands as a boy. So he would become estranged from his father and sister; so they would no longer be a team.
Jesus Christ you are hilarious and a comedian. This chapter was perfect for you. Not so good for me in my binge of this series whilst trying to sleep. Too much laughter
Maybe you mentioned it in the previous Theon chapter, but I didn't hear it here. The name of the captain's daughter is never even revealed to the reader. Theon thinks so little of her that her name never even crosses his mind all the times he sees her.
BLESSED BE THE RETURN OF THE SCHWIFT
To be fair about deconstructing aragorn ruling wisely for 100 years, that was after centuries of misrule, decay, plus a shoddy track record of Isildurs heirs and numenor before that, and all the chaos of Beleriand haha
Aragorn was like the first truly good ruler for millennia, and it was after all the bad crap had wrapped up, just a happy epilogue
Another one already? Schwift you are spoiling us!
>their idea of a good time is risking dismemberment
Somewhere in the multiverse Ramsay Bolton attempts to take on Amos Burton.
Year of the Schwift

49:32 When King Urragon III Greyiron died, his family called a kingsmoot while his eldest son, Torgon Greyiron, was off at sea raiding. The kingsmoot raised up Urrathon IV Goodbrother, whose first act was to put all of Urragon's present kin to death. Torgon the Latecomer returned two years later and claimed the kingsmoot was unlawful since he, the previous king's son, was not present to put forth his candidacy as was his right. Since Urrathon was bloodthirsty and his cruelty made him many enemies, the priests and ironborn denounced him and raised Torgon to be the new king.
Prank em asha
these are literally so fire please keep going
It’s gonna take years to finish
What a pleasant surprise! I only expect to be graced with an Abridged once every month or two. Cheers, man!
Checking in from 2021, the car very much continued to crash
You don’t think Euron planted Wex there from the beginning? Dumb (of speech), spied on Theon ...? Love to know your thoughts. Margo - Sydney
happy new year schwift
23:15 It's a little different between the character of Aragorn and Theon. Aragorn would have probably swayed Asha into giving him kingship.
Great stream, thanks!
I love how you say “Byitch” 😂
