- Here's a cover of this fabulous solo improvised by Blue Mitchell on his 1960 album Blue's Moods. So many good licks to learn from it !

Guitar: Gibson SG '61 Reissue 2007
Pickups : '57 Classic Pickups

Great playing. Which proves that jazz is the PLAYER not just the instrument. Jazz was played in the earlier dayson a hollow guitar because that was really the only type of guitar available, but not so today. There are more types of guitar to play whatever style of music you want to play. And the solids are perfect to do that.
Thank you ! And exactly 🙌🏻
The mouth movements make this. A true jazz man.
I found the SG to be a great Jazz guitar with its short scale length, wide fretboard and comfortable body cut never mind the great pick-ups. Nice to see that you agree!
I think every guitar is able to sound "jazzy" with the proper audio processing ! But some are just born more incline to the sound then others. The SG is a great guitar for almost every style, I agree ! Thanks for the comment 🙌🏻
Wow! That's the cleanest tone I have ever heard out of an SG. That's awesome, I could listen to that all day!
Thank you sir! This is by far the most convincing video on YT showing SGs do Jazz well! Hats off to your wonderful playing as well!
Hey thanks a lot my friend !! They sure do. This one in particular does really well with the classic 57 pickups in it! Just add a little eq and you got a jazzy tone from your SG. Hope you subscribe to the channel 😊

It really does everything very well! The look gave a lot of association with heavier music, but it really is very-very versatile!
@@ariobintangnugraha1916 It's only image. It's closer to a 335 than most people would imagine by just looking, especially with these 57s and other more civilized pickups in it.
Wow, I didn’t know SG's sound such good!
I’ve always known that the sg was a great pick for jazz. Super underrated guitar for clean sounds. Great playing mate.
Thanks man !
Man I love SGs, and this dude’a killer playing. Great video👍
@@chrisb8193 Many thanks man !
One of my favourite solos and you nailed it! Couldn't wipe the smile off my face..haha
Yeah 😁 !! Thanks a lot
wow
Lovely
@@francodefreitas9831 Thank you !
i love it!
Great playing, I have an SG 61 myself and I must say it is the most versatile guitar I know, its sound have a place in all types of music, from the smoothest jazz to the darkest heavy metal.
I would love a transcription of this for sure! I am a gigging jazz guitarist, and a solo like this has a great feel to it. I see you singing it as you play. I do this too (or try to lol) and this form of improvising really feels so free. It makes jazz feel like jazz if that makes sense lol. Great playing, great tone, great phrasing: well done.
Hey thanks a lot my friend !! Appreciate it. I have the transcription for it and I can send it to you if you'd like. Just send me an email (my email is in the info of my UA-cam channel) or write me on Facebook and I'll give it to you !
I love it!
Thanks a lot my friend !!
I’ve been playing jazz fusion for many many
years on my old Les Paul SG. Extraordinary modern sound with the PAF pickups. However, there’s some strange magic with a semi-hollow. The slightly acoustic tone with my Yamaha SA2200 is great, too.
Spectacular !
Thank you !!
Awesome playing
@@dnee18 thank you !
What a versatile guitar! Incredible playing too -- so smooth!
Hey thank you so much !!
Awesome stuff man. Love a good SG 😊
@@CBGypsy03 thank you man 🙌🏻
Beautiful lines. You play through those changes really well.
Thank you !!
1:39 is where the best parts of this outstanding solo lie. Incredible. Great playing and video.

Absolutely awesome ,love it ,well done!! Tone of note!!
Thank you so much !!
@@etiennechagnon only a Pleasure!!!
I had an SG just like that - great for rock snd blues - too dark for Jazz - sold it, then bought a 335, more snappier and 3D sounding
Excellent playing and lovely tone.
Thank you 🙌🏻 !
Soooooo good!
Thanks a lot 😊!
Awesome!
Thank you 🙌🏻
I’ve never owned an SG and have only ever tried one in a shop for 5 minutes. Your exquisite jazz sound and playing here show what this great instrument is capable of. As good a jazz tone as I’ve heard.
Thanks a lot !!
Wow, well done and great tone!
Hey thanks a lot John 😊 !
Thank You. That’s Amazing, such a great jazz tone. Take Care.
Hey thank you man ! Appreciate the comment, take care too

Hey thanks a lot !! I've put a link to my transcription in the description of the video 🙌🏻
great playing, great tone man!
Thanks man !
Sounds fantastic! Great playing also! 👍
Thank you 🙌🏻
wow this is so good.
Thank you so much !!
Tone and playing are great. I'm guessing that that there are heavier strings than most rock players would use on the SG, and of course you beautifully dialed in your amp for a jazz sound. Those things have at least as much impact as the style of guitar, probably much more.
Great 👌
Thanks again my friend !
Everything in this video is so cool 😛🎸
Thanks 😊 !
Really cool
Thank you !
Very nice. Can’t believe this from SG. 👍👍👍
Hey thanks man !!
Muy motivador🍻
Muchas gracias man 🙌🏻
You know how to play Jazz, Sir! Very well played. I play Jazz on my SG too.
Thank you for the kind words my friend 🙌🏻 !
wow nice playing !
Hey thanks !!
Jazz sounds great on any gibson even an Explorer
Brutal… ink, axe, sound and feel. 🇦🇺😷
Haha thanks a lot man 😁 Hope you subscribe !!
Ok, now I’m convinced that it’s the player and not the guitar. Never I would have thought of seeing an SG used for jazz. Also helps to know your way with the tone knobs
i’ve used my SG for fusion, never out and out jazz though. i should give it a try i guess
👍.... and I dig Blue Mitchell.
Thanks and me too, I'm a fan of his playing !
instagram? you are the best! what a tone!!!!
I don't have an instagram sorry 😕 Thanks a lot my friend !!!
Nice solo!!!
Thank you !!
@@etiennechagnon Can I ask you a question about learning jazz guitar to play like you do....do you start with scales or music theory first? Or What do you recommend? I am a close-to-intermediate player, went to a website call Music is Win (recommended by others), but there are some many instructional videos there that I don't even know what to line up for the next year or month. I know I won't be watching their Japanese Scale Video :-)
こうして聴くと、ブルー・ミッチェルがいかに希有なメロディストであるかがより鮮明になりますね。それにしても、このギタリストは容貌に似合わず、伝統的なコンセプトをちゃんと理解しているんですね。人は見かけによりません。
I have the '61 sg (les paul). I honestly think this guitar can do just about any style of music.
.... Even though I have some reservations about Gibson regarding consistency in finish quality.
I love that soft red color!... What do they call that color...I have a sort of ...burgandy red...but love your color better!.. I assume you are only on the neck pickup?.. Thanks!..
yeah, tell me again that jazz cant be played on anything but an archtop. lol dude is ripping it for phrasing and tone while rocking an Angus.. this sounds awesome! kudos
Haha thanks a lot man !! Hope you subscribe 🙏🏻

Wow!! very nice tone
how did you make this tone?
Just subscribed! That tone and playing caught me! Can you tell me what amp or plug-in your are using and specially, how do you get a good jazz tone? Amp settings, knobs on guitar? Neck pickup mainly? Cheers!
Hey man ! Thank you, glad you liked it 🙌🏻 ! I was using Guitar Rig 3 at the time. Nowadays I get a better one with Amplitube 5. You can check my other videos to ear examples. In this video I was on the neck pickup with the tone knob roll off to around 6. Then what does the biggest difference is to set a good EQ in your DAW to shape a jazz tone ! Cheers
Very nice playing! I got a Ibanez SG from 1975 and put the best Gibson PAF pickups, sounds like yours, if not fatter and more open, belly....greetings
Thank you sir 🙌🏻 And wow so cool, I'm also searching to acquire an older one or a vos but they're rare and expensive !!!
Love this tone! Do you have much in the way of effects to get this out of an SG?
No like I said in other comments, it's mostly about rolling the tone knob a bit and knowing how to eq in your daw afterwards !
As a musician, I always wonder seeing 'That kind of guitar player' WHY THE GRIMACES !?!?! Cheers !!!
Exellent , bravo , je m abonnes
Merci beaucoup !!
Great solo! I am having an SG set up right now, and looking to get some jazz tones out of it. By any chance are you using flatwound strings?
Hey thanks man ! The strings on mine are just regular 10-46 roundwounds but I was also curious about putting flatwounds on it. Let me know if you ever do so and you like the feel! Hope you subscribe to the channel 😊
@@etiennechagnon almost can’t believe that 😄… they sound like a set of 11 or even 12’s. Woao 👍👍
@@Jimi_7-7-7 Haha I swear ! I'm too pussy to play standard with 11's roundwounds 😂 Thanks man !!
@@etiennechagnon hahahahah 😂👍… come on… 12‘s are the real deal 😄✅😱😎
Beautiful tone! What amp did you use, a Fender?
Thanks! The guitar was directly plugged in guitar rig
What color...is that red color called?...Or...Did you have it repainted?..I love it!.. Let me know, if you will. Thanks!
Hey ! It's just the original color and I don't know what it's called I'm sorry...
I have my dad's 1968 SG. It's in need of a refretting but it's a total workhorse. Great for every genre. These are some of the most versatile guitars ever made IMO.
You lucky bastard !! I totally agree with you, I can play anything with that guitar. It's super versatile
Can I ask, and more over would you tell me, what settings you used on the guitar to get that sound?
Hey Gary ! Tone rolled out at about 6 and that's it! Then a good EQ post production to help to shape the tone a bit more jazz like
Great Work..Nice tone..where can i find your transcribtion:)!?
Thanks 😊! Give me your email here or dm me on my fb page and I'll give it to you !
thinking of buying a SG, it’s a small format to play in your sofa compared to a Es-335
Sure is ! haha I love the tone of 335s and archtops but they're uncomfortable to play in many situations
Awesome playing! Where/how did you learn this kind of guitar vocabulary?
Thanks !! This exact video was a transcription I did of Blue Mitchell's solo like the title says ! You learn a lot by doing transcriptions by ears in jazz, it's a common thing every player should do
Since their so much lighter and comfortable then a les paul, it should dominate in that section
nice playing! can i ask, whats ur action and gauge sir?
Thanks ! Like said before, regular roundwounds 10's and pretty low action
I'm interested in what amp are you using here! Nice sound!
Thanks ! I plugged straight into the interface with guitar rig 3 at that time
awesome dude, which pickups are these?
Thanks a lot man ! They're 57' classic
@@etiennechagnon thanks bro, hugs from Brazil :)
Nice tone!
How do you get this jazz tone on SG?
Thanks George ! Neck pickup, jazz amp, roll the tone a little bit then it's a good eq setup that does the magic! Hope you subscribe 🙌🏻
@@etiennechagnon I did!
@@etiennechagnon What amp do you use?
@@george_guitar_lessons Hey thanks a lot man !! Actually nothing fancy for this recording, straight into the twin reverb simulator in guitar rig, than a little post production with reverb, eq and compressor.
I'm not a jazzer bit I enjoyed this a lot.
ps the stuff on your Spotify profile sounds a bit different to this!!
Hey thanks again !! Yeah I study jazz at school but I'm really into a lot of different styles 😊
Sounds fantastic! You could fool me into thinking this is an archtop. Flat or roundwounds?
Thanks !! Regular roundwounds on that video, but I did a test last year with flats on it. You can check out my other videos on my channel you'll find 3 videos with flats !
@@etiennechagnon Thanks! Will check them out.
Are you recording sound from your amp or straight into interface?

I'll try to be the first ! haha
Someone’s affraid of needles.
Sir, that's a blues lawyer hat. Please take off our uniform if you're going to play this well.
SG shouldn't called as "satan guitar"
La preuve que les guitares n'ont pas de style spécifique
True that ! Honnêtement j'ai pas de difficulté à obtenir un tone jazzy avec la SG, c'est plus une question de playing, d'ampli et d'eq après ça. Et les 57 sont tellement des pickups polyvalents, ça aide aussi!
