- It was a violent crime that shook a quiet Canadian town: Mysterious intruders break into the home of Vietnamese immigrants, terrorize the family, and leave a traumatized daughter as the only witness. Neighbors and friends describe the family as hospitable, generous, and hard-working - how could they be targets? This feature-length documentary from director Jenny Popplewell (American Murder: The Family Next Door) uses police interrogation footage and testimony from those involved to unravel a web of complexities that no one saw coming.

That cop was so smart in asking her to demonstrate how she gained access to her phone if her hands were tied.
thats not smart that’s common sense that a 10 year old has lol
@@doctorposting Jenifer is smart to answer that cop of how to hear the phone, right? (volume up, bingo)

When she was on the phone with 911,
U can hear the moment her fake panic becomes real when she hears her dad screaming for help downstairs & realizes he's still alive.
And she yelled out loud, so the father can't speak the truth...if he knw she is on phn...which maybe because they show in the video...she called 911 whn she was nearby them
@@parisandhu552I’m saying like, I found it a little weird when she was yelling at her dad as soon as he started suddenly yelling. you’d think if she truly was in shock she’d be crying *with* him, if you know what i’m getting at. but no, it felt more like when you’re speaking over someone to shush them. she wasn’t listening to anything he was saying. he cried but she didn’t try to hear what he was saying. she right away went “i’m okay dad”, as if she had heard him checking on her, but he didn’t even do that 😭
and there’s no way she listened enough for her to know that💀

He might have requested not to be mentioned which is understandable
Ikr they showed a clip of her brother’s torso at the funeral for 2 seconds
There's a brother???
I just watched the documentary, she is a psychopath, I can understand being upset over your parents disapproval of a relationship, but who the hell would do such a sick thing?
Learn more about her background as a child with these parents and may be you will gain some perspective. Not that I’m saying what she did was right
@@noniz9567 What about her childhood?
Part of me related with her, Because immigrant ethnic parents are like this. They mentally abuse you for years and they don’t even realise how wrong they are. They think they r doing it for you, but they doing it for themselves. I speak from experience because that’s how I was raised. There’s so many times I wanted to move out. That’s what I would do. But I would never think of committing a crime tho.
I remember this case I knew someone was gonna make a documentary or a movie out of it eventually.
yessss. true crime fans know it all. i’m just watching the documentary after looking into the case years ago

When I heard the call and her saying that her hands were tied, I knew that was weird, like, how do you make a proper phone call with your hands tied?
She actually showed the detectives how she made the call with her hands tied, if you’ve seen the footage. She is guilty of course, but she did manage to make the call. Takes some flexibility!
I got so much chills down my back when cop said Jennifer was walking downstairs with homeboy and etc, with her on the phonecall and shit. She was acting scared asf cause she wanted the cops and responders to think she was a victim. That part….. man
I was reminded of Jennifer's story just this evening and then this pops up! No idea Netflix was doing an adaptation

Seen this a while back on JCS - Jennifer's Solution and he did an amazing job with the material. Sad that S3 of Mindhunter got cancelled cause they wanted to force producers to make it 'more appealing'' to a wider audience otherwise the budget 'is too high' for what it is, but still glad they refused to take the core component away and they rather wanted it cancelled then butchered. Instead, we got this. Yey
Such a cold, heartless, annoying murderer. All of the detectives have the patience of saints.

This story depicts how black men are falsely accused ,in order to cover her crime the first thing she blurted out was that black men killed her parents coz she knew the police will believe it such a messed up world to be black
That’s what I thought too , that’s pretty messed up but not surprised that East Asians will say something like that and blaming it on black men
Their names are David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford, and Eric Carty. She wasn’t lying about them being black.
But 2 of them were black so she was just trying to be consistent in case any footage showed up.
What in the blockbuster movie was that music, I could close my eyes and tell you that this was a Netflix trailer
It's interesting how different the criminal justice system is in Canada. If this was in America, Jennifer would have been looked at as a potential suspect, not an automatic victim. When the movie started with Jennifer's 911 call, I already knew it was her who murdered them 😫
In America, all you have to do is blame the Black Boogieman and at the very least it will gain you more time to get your story together.

2 black, 1 Asian, 1 Indian/brown.

On top of that if you were trying to hide it , you don't implicate the race of people helping you out, she was better off saying she didn't know.

I live in markham, close to where she lived.
It's kinda messed cus a few years later, another kid from markham in the same neighbourhood slaughtered his entire family (mom, grandma, sister & father)
simply because he had been lying about going to college when he wasn't
the day before his "graduation" instead of expose the truth he killed them all and shared the pics on his computer game. Concerned players called the police.
But yea She's so stupid. This is one of the safest , suburban areas.
Home invasions are kinda common but they almost never have violence, nevermind a DOUBLE murder!!?
Especially when the homeowners just ur average middle aged couple!! She really thought she could pass off something like that so casually, and just be home the entire time too.
Plus, she was naive to willingly talk so much to the police. She talked way too much & got her story twisted up.

What kind of sucks about these documentaries is that most of us already seen them covered by multiple UA-camrs 🤷🏻♀️
Messiah series gotta come back. We need more movies/series like that!
When she said like it was a Calm neighbourhood, so diverst and multi cultural.. like bruh, that's when crime rate usually escalates😅🤦
No, crime rates escalate when the neighborhood is poor and is neglected by the government.
That's sometimes the result of strict parenting. 😢 I feel sad for her.
" I wanted to stay with them, and take care of them "
Yep she took care of them alright...
How many documentaries with the same footage and police interrogation videos about this girl are they going to make? Old case and nothing new learned
I will never understand how they always think they will get away with it. So sad that her mother's last words were "Please don't hurt my daughter". Can't believe how innocent she played herself. There are no words for such a cruel betrayal of her parents. And her "boyfriend" helped her with that.
I knew it was her from the beginning. This was a great documentary to watch.

I wish they tell what’s not told in other documentaries in UA-cam.. such as her life when she was young, how her relationship was with her parents before meeting the boyfriend.. and what actually cause her to deceive her parents for so many years.. these are crucial points of why she snapped.. I just don’t know why that I have this feeling that her dad filing a no contact restraining order on her after she’s released kinda shows that his dad is really a hard cold calculating person and not reflecting on his actions in her childhood that might have also cause her to snap
As an Asian American, I wonder if she suffered a lot of emotional abuse.

The evil thing is when you accuse the criminals as if they are black.
Some of you said her parents were abusive. I think they're not, who would like to let your daughter date a drug dealer? C'mon!
Y’all stuck on the drug dealer ..it was more than that : they wanted control over every decision of her life … she has no choice …that’s why she made fake documents of everything
How could she do that to her own parents the ones that cared for her , gave her everything she had in life ? What a deplorable vile selfish person !
It's not her fault, 100%. Jeniffer isn't a bright student in school, but the parents put too much pressure on her until she had no choice but to lie to her parents about her achievement.

I'm excited to be able to see this. I've seen different perspectives of this from Mr Ballen, to even the red-handed podcast. I can get why she would do what she did.
Why? Cause her parents told her to get a job if she didn’t want to go to college and to stop seeing her drug dealing boyfriend who didn’t even want her anymore anyway?
@@dailyinspiration5540 I don't know maybe it's because from the many podcasts and true crime sources I've listened to regarding this story, the parents seem very dominating and controlling, not allowing Jennifer to make any mistakes on her own.
They were described as "tiger parents" which I guess in some Asian families, high success is an absolute must. Just looking at the Wikipedia page on tiger parenting, it mentions that some of the negative effects of the parenting style include anxiety and depression.
Basically Jennifer had no true critical thinking skills, and did not genuinely trust her parents leading to what has happened. Does this happen with all "tiger families" no, but it certainly is a parenting style that I do not agree with.
Can we just point out how she didn't have a lawyer this whole time? Doesn't negate from the grotesque nature of what she did, just wondering how that was allowed to happen....
In Canada are you just automatically given one? In the states you gotta ask for one or they can just keep going.
No I’m not saying what her actions did was right but as someone who came from a very abusive household - all parties need to be held accountable.
The dad should be doing crime as well
Again - NO. I do not agree with her decisions at all but I also hope she that is getting active help for her mental health and not just in a prison. And no I don’t think she should have parole - she truly just needs help.
Her parents didn’t abusive her. Stop that bs narrative. “Tiger” parenting is pretty common in the Asian American culture. Her father even gave her to option to leave the house so she can go be with Daniel. She chose to stay with her parents. She’s an adult, not some 10 year old that was locked up in a cage.

Jennifer is not that much different from Gypsy Rose Blanchard who is already out of prison and somehow an American celeb now. What Jennifer Pan did was certainly wrong and she should be in prison for the entirety of her sentence, but there’s no way to argue that she wasn’t severely mentally abused for her entire life by her parents and didn’t know how to escape them even after she was an adult. I do believe that she thought that killing them was her only way out even if you want to scream just move out and cut them out of your life you’re in your twenties ffs. Mentally, she was their hostage.
Severely is a strong word to use. Also she had a brother whom is on a different page about this.
