Finnish grilli's are pretty much like hot dog stands. Separate from those there are actual barbecue restaurants. In town centers they are usually open late at night and it's tradition to get in a drunk fight on a grilli queue. The lihapiirakka (meat pie) is a Finnish favorite. It's a deep fried savoury pie with minced meat and rice in it. At the grilli's you can usually get other fillings inside it like sausages, cucumber salad and sauces.
Lihapiirakka sounds good! I need to try it
@7:26 that guy with the orange bike is the mailman. 🙂
That jaivaskaila is hilarious 😃
I would order from grilli the classic makkaraperunat, which is sausage and fries. Sliced sausage with fries, and with "all spices" which usually means ketchup, mustard, onion and relish but can also include things like garlic, pineapple, mayo, and whatever you can think of 😃
Here in northern Finland, makkaraperunat are better known as makkaraherkku.
You don't usually get any typical bbq food from Finnish grill kiosks. Of course, you can get hamburgers and sausages, but the main offer is French fries and some side dishes for them, like a kebab with French fries (not one of my favorites, usually the kebab meat in these places is pretty bad compared to actual kebab places, but there are exceptions to this, e.g. Torikeidas in Rovaniemi sells really good kebab portions) or, for example, makkaraherkku or makkaraperunat (how can anyone say that)
personally, I don't know why pineapple is a topping..haha
Mantun Grilli in Turku (the little yellow one) is famous because Finnish singers visit there after their restaurant shows.
It's now −31 °C in Jyväskylä (airport measuring site), which is pretty cold. For me, +24 °C is bearable but much warmer than that gets unpleasant.
There's this classic grill kiosk treat called 'lihapiirakka' (meat pie). Usually enjoyed with 'kahdella nakilla' (two frankfurters (or what you call them)) and 'kaikilla mausteilla' (with all the toppings). Couple of videos on that: "Eating Our Way Thru Finland! | Chuds BBQ" and "Finnish Meat Pie | Lihapiirakka". Most common thing grilled by folks themselves are sausages: "TRYING FINNISH MAKKARA | Part 2 | Taste Test Tuesday" and "I became a Real Finnish *Yum* Grill Sausage in the Forest Finland Vlog, traveling solo". Potatoes are a big thing in Finland, so one top seller is 'makkaraperunat': "Finnish Sausage and Fries - Makkaraperunat". There's pizzas and such of course: "Pizza Berlusconi: The Politics Behind Reindeer Pizza" and "Kun Chuck Norris menee Hesburgeriin - hän ei jonota". American/Texas style BBQ is a growing thing in Finland: "Burgerimiehet THE BURGER MAN' Song | Burgerimiehet Pohjois-Amerikassa" and "TEXANS TRY BBQ IN FINLAND?? (DID NOT EXPECT THIS)". There's a lot of water areas in Finland, so grilling fish food is a common thing: "VisitFinland Finnish Summer Food" and "Finnish fish delicacies on an open fire". Couple of traditional treats: "1000 years ago KALAKUKKO bread" and "Robbers Roast - Rosvopaisti". Some beer to go with those: "Real Ale Craft Beer Finlandia Sahti Beer Review" and "SheltonBrothers Brewing Up A SAHTI". Rye bread is one of the things Finns miss when living abroad: "Quest for Sourdough Finland - the tradition of rye breads.".
Many off the grills open around lunch time and close about 10pm like the one in the last round. But there are some grills that open late like 4-5pm and are open to like 2-3am in the night.
That when most bars close and the drunken people are out to look for food. 😁
Nothing like good food after a fun night out!
Very nice map. Those traditional grill kiosks have lost a big part of their business to eg. McDonald's, Hesburger etc. in the past decades and there aren't that many grills anymore as there used to be. In some round you were wondering because they were closed. Those in cities usually open in the afternoon and stay open almost till the morning because they do their best business after the nightclubs etc. close and people are hungry. Then those that are in places like on the last round are very famous along truckers and other people who are on the road.
"Kahvi" indeed means "coffee". And "kahvila" means "café". ☕
I just need to do a daily Finnish language course on Duolingo..
Mantun grilli is famous from Vares detective stories by Reijo Mäki, as well.
In the first round you visited Kupittaa area in Turku. There's a large Citymarket open 24/7. Kiosks were more popular and relevant in the past decades (20th century), when grocery stores used to be closed on Sundays, and open quite limited on Saturdays (around 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.). Monday to Friday groceries were typically closed at 7 p.m. Open hours were gradually extended. Nowadays there are no limitations. Bad for kiosks.
Greetings from Turku!
American style BBQ hasn't really been a thing in Finland until the 2000s. Traditional Finnish grills usually serve burgers, hot dogs, fries, sausages and meat pies. Also kebab is really popular here nowadays (due to immigration that started in the 80s and 90s) and you can get kebab almost in any grill or kebab-pizzeria. Kebab in Finland doesn't normally mean kebab skewers, but more like gyro-meat in the States.
We Finns have always been really keen on barbecue at home, but for decades we just had mainly sausages or different kinda steaks. Now we do also slow cooked American style barbecue at home, maybe it's because recipes are easier available.
The meat we use is usually pork or chicken, because they're cheaper than beef (a pound of cheapest low quality beef can easily cost 7$ compared to pork, which is normally only 3,5-4$ per pound). Chicken is even cheaper if one doesn't want to buy the highest quality stuff.
And talking about sausages, we also cook them on a sauna stove while bathing in sauna. 😁
That fourth place had a fun name, "Tankkari". Usually the verb "tankata" means to fill the car tank at a gas station, so "tankkari" then is like a place where you fill yourself :D
Well now we need All over the map grill here
Yes - I'd keep the menu simple with Finnish classic food but with an American style to it...
I usually order what you'd call "tiputaksari" in the central-finland region, which is the classic fries and sausage, but with chicken breast instead.
Also how have i never realized the existence of the grill from round 4, walked past there so many times, done grocery shopping there, eaten at the couple pizzerias and even got a haircut at the barber. And never noticed that there's a grill kiosk 😂
The extremely stereotypical safe choices at a grill are lihapiirakka with extras, either two Frankfurters or a Frankfurter and an egg, French fries and sausages, a double hamburger, or a porilainen. A porilainen is a hamburger that has a large slice of fried sausage instead of beef. Some ultra puristic people will also say that an actual porilainen has to be made into a sandwich instead of a hamburger bun, but many people disagree. And also the sausage is supposed to be of exactly certain make, but in generic use there is some more variety. American style barbecue has only been a thing in Finland for less than 20 years.
Feeling famished now scrolling through Mission BBQ website! Also, I love the cause behind it. Can't think of anything similar in Finland in terms of the mission itself, but BBQ is all around. There is a BBQ in Oulu called Kauppuri 5, which serves the incredible Teurastaja burger. It's not for everyone, which makes it amazing. Katuköökki TakeAway in Raahe is a BBQ with some of the best Kebab in Finland, and I still have a soft spot for Hook's chicken wings and jalapeno poppers in Tampere and Turku.
That's great that you looked it up - and I had it last night for dinner - Brisket! Jalapeno poppers are one of my favorite foods as well - and wrap them in bacon to make it even better - ha!
@@alloverthemap23 Thanks for that! I will definitely try make some bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers now that you told me, because that sounds friggin delicious.
There is some nice BBQ places in FInland but im not sure if any of them is up to the US BBQ standars hehe. Doing BBQ in the summertime is many finns favourite hobby.
But its usualy just some sausages and ribs/stakes or what ever. Finnish grill sausage and beer goes a long way. 🤣
Finland sounds like my place to be in the summer.. beer and sausage on the grill
24C now would feel very very wrong. Almost as wrong is the forecasted +2 for Tuesday from -27 on Sunday.
8:07 it has been under -30 °C pretty much the whole week, worst we had here was -36 °C so yea +24 °C would actually feel pretty good right about now (outside) :D
18:26 The sign says there's CCTV in the area.
Pretty easy locations, apart from second round. 25k in touch over 11 minutes, only the last round ruined a nice staying under 5 meters from the dot game.
I think the sign on the second round grill was just doubled when parsing the image, so it looked like it says "Uhkoolan" instead of "Uhkolan".
@13:31 Just a guess, but that person might have brought something to the used clothing bin that is behind the car on the sidewalk, and is just about to leave. Or they are just lazy.
I don't really visit grills myself, but "lihapiirakka" is a staple food from these places. It's a deep fried savory pastry filled with rice and minced meat mixture, often served with extra sausage, fried egg or ham and condiments ranging from the usual ketchup, mustard and relish to pretty much anything you can think of. Makkaraperunat, i.e. sausage and fries is another classic.
There's a couple of American style BBQ restraunts here in Finland nowadays. I know of a couple, probably the most famous is JJ's BBQ at Salo and I think there's another one in Hämeenlinna, but i'm not sure if it is any good or not.
My favorite thing to order from grill was "valkosipuliherkku" or garlic delicasy in suomi-grilli, mikkeli. It had ground beef patty and block potatoes with garlic butter and mayo. Delicious af, at least how I remember it
Definitely no gravy with chips, that would make them soggy and nasty. I've not heard of chips with cheese either. Lihapiirakka kahdella nakilla or makkaraperunat are most likely options. Lihapiirakka is a steamed and then fried flat-ish bread filled with mixture of minced meat and cooked rice. It is split open, added two frankfurthers/hot dogs (steamed), and added ketchup, mustard, relish and chopped raw onion. Makkaraperunat is pieces of fried sausages and potatoes, usually with the same condiments I mentioned, sometimes mayo, coleslaw or something else, too. Big glass of cold milk with them. :)
If I would open a grill, I would specialize in BBQ ribs 😋🍖
That would be my go to - look up Terry Black's BBQ in Austin, Texas - that place has unbelievable BBQ ribs..
i always order lihis munalla ja maito rahalla
Would you be interested in trying my geoguessr map? It's called Suomen rengasliikkeet / Finnish tire shops. Contains pretty much exactly what you would think by the name. Some of them are quite easy, since some have the town name printed on the wall sign but there's also some more challenging ones in between
Will play it soon!
@@alloverthemap23 how soon?
Congrats to the USA for winning the World Juniors hockey gold today🇫🇮🤝🇺🇲
Thanks! US Hockey at the youth levels has come a long way in the past 25 years.
