In 20 years, I have never been shown this type of operation, and I work around a few high-rises. Thank you!

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Union sprinklerfitter with 10 years experience in Pittsburgh PA. That’s funny cause I’ve been on multiple service calls where there was a popped sprinkler head or a bad leak or blown out pipe and the fire department shows up and literally shuts every single sprinkler valve in the building. Prime example of that is there’s still a pending law suit against a volunteer fire company in our territory where they responded to a call and there was a freeze up with blown out dry system piping where the system tripped fire pump kicked on and they shut the wall PIV off that supplies the fire pump and never turned off the fire pump. The electric fire pump ran dry until I showed up almost an hour later. The lid of the pump was black because of how hot it was. The pump was completely cooked. Very expensive whoops on the fire company. The customer wants a new fire pump. They should have known to atleast shut the pump off. They killed the fire protection to the entire building instead of just shutting down the dry system. Just proves training goes a long way.

Volunteer firefighters often aren't adequately trained. They improvise as they go,cross their fingers and toes, and hope for the best.

in this example they show check valves at each zone manifold, so the floors wouldn't drain out. they could have also shut down individual stand pipes or sent someone to the firepump room to shut down pump/closed pump discharge valves. shouldn't the pre incident plan have instructions?

My FD had preplans that showed valve configuration. Shutting floor valve and using drain is normally accepted technique taught in the apprenticeship program; it may have been covered in Standing Orders as well.
A one year probationary program is not a replacement for a three year JATC program turning out Journeyman FF’s.
Producing site plans does help. They’re the class outline for company officers during site familiarization. How many does the FD produce per month?

Great info! However, where i work,we, (Inspetors), do not witness contractors test any if the fire alarm, sprinkler systems, or any ITM items any longer. Just collect copies of paperwork from the property managers..

All the floors have check valves so the only water column is the standpipe

6” riser, about 300 gallons above. 4” about 125 gallons. I have no idea why they included check valve at each floor.

Check valves are required on every FCV

Diesel engine fire pump for a residential building? Who designed that?
