Amy, that was a harp you heard, it was played in studio by Tom "Moth" Monger, other musicians you can hear are: Bruce White (viola), Everton Nelson (violin), Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums) and Rob Ackroyd (guitar), song was recorded and produced by James Ford, who also play piano and guitar on recording.
James Ford is well known as a producer who worked a lot with Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow puppets, and Depeche Mode, along with Florence and the Machine.
Song is written by singer Florence Welch, together with Isabella Summers who plays keyboards and synthesizers in band.
Tom Monger who plays harp, is also playing xylophone, and various percussion instruments in band.
So this machine that goes with Florence is musical one, but consist of real humans and real instruments, and they are one really musically interesting group of people, and I hope you will give them more chance.
Keep on good work Amy, kiss the little one and all greetings to Vlad!

Florence Welch has a truely unique vocal style and musicality. She's one of my favorite indie artists, along with St. Vincent's Annie Clark, a contemporary of Ms. Welch and one of the world's greatest lead guitarists, male or female.
Thanks once again, Amy, for another insightful "first listen."👍

I have seen her live in a festival a few years ago, that is a great memory for me. Her stage performance was so awesome, what a character. She has something unique in the way she sings and presents herself, how she moves on the stage. She looked like a witch or a faery, it was amazing.

There's a beautiful video on UA-cam of her singing this song to a young girl in her hospice hospital room. The 15-year-old girl named Cat Chen (you can find it on Cat's UA-cam channel) had tickets to go to her concert but was just too ill to make it. So Florence came to her and performed in her room. It's bitter sweet and beautiful.

If you want to try the most beautiful male voice, I recommend Dimash Qudaibergen, a Kazakh singer who is currently considered the most gifted, with a range of 7 octaves and 4 semitones... the song I recommend is "Stranger" in English (not perfect). Dimash has perfect pitch and sings in 14 languages...please listen to him ....

I enjoyed this, a new one for me. Those in my generation always talk about how our music was so much better and more creative, so I always like to hear newer artist showing that musical creativity and talent still exists, just not in the same volume as what was coming out in the 60s and 70s. At least not in terms of what succeeds in the mainstream markets, since creativity and talent still exist, with the truly creative ones mainly found in the indie markets. I went and watched a live performance and that is a full sized harp at the beginning being played on the highest strings. Perhaps it is run through some effects. You should watch them live to see if you think it has added effects. Great reaction!

This was a huge hit at the time and a bit of a "new classic" given its staying power, when I think of FTM I think of a dynamic range that starts soft but spends most of its time being bold, pounding, bombastic...approaching gospel in terms of its positivity and soul but within a vignette of melancholia as well. You raise a good point about how the bass doesn't provide much of a floor, it's more the big drums that do that I think. Was looking for 00s bands that have an intersection of popularity and artistic interest and looks like Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, the Flaming Lips, Wilco deserve a shout!

I thoroughly agree with Amy, as an old dog myself, I am just content to play a Led Zeppelin album again to save myself from disappointment in discovering new music, this I enjoy, this ain't no Taylor Swift or Beyonce.
I don't know much about them, working in Chicago for a few years there was a radio station in my car that pushed this band and once I watched a YT video of some open air music festival, heard them do one of their songs.
Yes, it's very studio over engineered and its very commercial. They have found (a bombastic) sound that works very well, the energy is very positive and vibrant with a unique voice. This song features some different segments and a few interesting voice harmonies to keep it all alive and not cookie cutter. I believe that the air-y plucked sound in an electronic harp and if the drums (which are very engineered) are fake, electric, I can't hear it, they sound real to me.
    Enjoyed this, thank you Amy.

Another old dog here and couldn't disagree more. It costs me all of 10 seconds to decide I don't like something I'm listening to and turn it off. Or, if someone tells me it gets better, or if someone that I trust tells me they really love something, maybe it costs a few minutes to listen to an entire track. I have hours in a given day, I can afford a few minutes.
If I hadn't opened myself up to finding new music I would never have learned about Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, Kimbra, Of Monsters and Men, Caro Emerald, Homefree, and so, so many more. There's a ton of really great music out there.

@LazloHo listen to Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes, "Home". You might hear something that reminds you of Of Monsters and Men, almost as though they ripped off Edward Sharp...

There’s been a ton of *great* music since the advent of the internet, y’all just weren’t being spoon fed by top 40 radio, fell out of touch. I’d encourage you to make the effort.

@@mjrtensepian1727 Wow, a few spirited arguments in disagreement, and I commented that I LIKE Florence and the Machine. mjr1727, I have been told by a few of my young friends that there's great music being made today, That I just don't know how to find it and I reckon that they and you are right. But doesn't that just make my point, my argument? If someone makes great music today, top40 radio isn't going to play, you have to go to some niche obscure retailer that supports music that doesn't sell well, Target is not going to sell those albums, Walmart isn't. Bad music is supported by the labels and outlets and I don't think that was the case with the label bosses at Atlantic Records who decided to sign Led Zeppelin, as an example.
You don't have statistics on your side, fewer young people learn how to play an instrument today or even take music courses, less music is recorded using real instruments, just about all vocalists are pitch corrected with software today, there is certainly less diversity in music offerings today, 1970's classic rock music recording outsell new music, does that one tell you anything?

I appreciate your style to play longer segments differently than the redhead, Elizabeth? I mean this in the best possible way but your superficial analysis is more deserved than her overwrought analysis. It only Rock and Roll.

    Hello,
I recommend you listen to Muse - Exogenesis Symphony Full
Muse are one of the most innovative bands of of the past 25 years, incorporating classical, progressive, alternative, and other subgenres in their music.
In this case Exogenesis Symphony its comprised of 3 parts, and as the name suggest, it is classical/operatic sounding. Each part is unique but at the same time add up to tell a full story, one I think you might really enjoy.

If you're doing more contemporary songs now, I would love to hear your take on Richard Dawson's "Jogging" from his 2019 album 2020. It's at once sophisticated and raw, catchy and uncompromising, and it breaks the unspoken rules people usually follow in song lyrics in interesting ways. ua-cam.com/video/UGiQ_-Ktpvc/v-deo.htmlsi=m_PxwUjgp7IuBrAJ

I wonder if Tom Monger knew his harp was processed? I don't pretend to know, but the trouble with making accusations about someone still alive and playing, is that they might come back and bite you somewhere delicate. Afterall, Amy didn't recognise the harp as actually being a real one, and if it is, then.........😀😀.

If you really want to hear a real master harp without doubting if it is or not such instrument try Joanna Newsom's "Sawdust and diamonds" (the "Book of right on" is even better, but that is for later). One day or another you must hear her but be prepared: she is not really rock but an amalgam of folk, rock, classic... she also is a great poet-lyricist. And like you she is classical musician trained in harp and piano.
