Makes me proud seeing more people on the spectrum getting into Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, Calisthenics, or any strength sport. For me seeing Tom Stoltman win The Worlds Strongest Man Competition just solidified the idea that anything is possible even if you're wired a little differently
Hey, 16 year old kid here (dads account that’s his pfp) currently in the. Process of getting diagnosed with autism and having a hard time accepting it but the gym is the one thing in life I seem to thrive at this makes me feel a. Bit more seen thank u
Yes I get this. I wonder if part of it is that autistics learn bottom up. It takes me forever to learn some stuff but once I learn it it’s like I can finally see the big picture. But because I learnt bottom up it’s like it’s easier to tweak the thing I’ve learnt, when I’ve learnt it, than if I was someone who learnt to do the thing but didn’t have to learn from the bottom up. I’m considering going gym once again, tried many times, but maybe being aware of how I learn, I will try to be patient.
I was avoiding the gym because I didn’t know how to do it or fit into my life and was anxious and overwhelmed.. I figured it is because I did not give myself time to learn or enough tries to learn, and quit way too early before I learned and became familiar. I would just be intimated and have anxiety and aversion to it but at the same time I also liked it and wanted to do it. Part of the reason is changing places is hard and fun can get too complicated so you quit before you learn it. Once you learn it, then you want to go back and repeat the task readily. I find I freak out and run away from things I am not familiar with, when I can give myself to learn and step after step it turns out not to be hard like I thought it was.
Also autistic that is all the time hurting myself by balance and proprioception being off. I was in gymnastics, cheerleading, softball and random other things growing up. Also love weight lifting and skating now. It depends on the activity for me I think.
Once I learned the benefit of "runners high", my ability to learn to control my body when hyperfocussed became easier. I still require time to build muscle memory though, now that I'm middle aged.
Autism = hyperfocussed on aesthetics = get aesthetics. real bench lacking because of bench - yea I get this with badminton, when I get into the vibe and warm up, I am insane, but my hand eye coordination lacks hard so I suck balls at football (English)

As long as u having a great time and enjoying yourself and it makes you feel better deep inside that’s all what matters
the reason it’s hard to balance and do certain things with autism is because of a lack of developed motor skills
