    Doesn't it seem like Nick is one of those guys that has a crazy natural talent for making things? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he puts in a ton of time practicing his skills, and that's obvious. It just feels like something that would take most of us years to be good at, Nick could be that good in a month lol.

    Nick, thank you for sharing your talents! You are a good teacher too, without being too informal - a good quality! I admire you for all your skills. How did you learn them all? How did you make the pinepitch glue? Thank you again!

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  7 років тому

      Andrei Gotia Thank you for the kind words! I've been blessed with a lot of teachers! I'll usually teach myself and then meet someone who has something to teach.
      As for the knapping, I mostly learned from the members of the Puget Sound Knappers. They put on several free knapp-ins in the Pacific Northwest every year.
      The pine pitch is just pine sap, some powdered charcoal, a little beeswax, and rubbed cotton fiber. My older batches used dryer lint, which works fine. You can also use rabbit or deer poop.

    Nick, where did you find/buy obsidian?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  8 років тому +3

      I find obsidian out at Glass Buttes in central Oregon. It's out in the middle of the desert, but it's worth the trip if you're nearby because there are chunks of obsidian like the one I'm using everywhere on the ground in flows and piles. If you want bigger stuff, most of it is just a couple feet under the light desert soil.
      Here are some directions: www.pugetsoundknappers.com/events/2016%20Glass%20Buttes%20Knap-in%20Announcement.html
      Other than that, most rock shops will sell obsidian (if you're near a volcano) or slag glass (if you're near a refinery) for a few dollars a pound.
      Hope this helps!
