  • The BirdLife Malta Ringing Scheme has been studying and ringing birds in Malta since 1965 and has been a full member of the EURING network since 1973. EURING, the European Union for Bird Ringing, is the co-ordinating organisation for European bird ringing schemes and it promotes cooperation, research, data sharing and conservation between its members.
Bird ringing is an important tool in the study and conservation of birds. Ringing is the process of marking birds with uniquely marked scientific rings that enable re-identification of a bird. This allows us to study different aspects of birds' lives and to learn how we can protect them better. In Malta, scientific bird ringing is ongoing and is carried out exclusively by licensed ringers within the BirdLife Malta Ringing Scheme - which is Malta’s only national and officially-recognised bird ringing scheme.
As the official registered EURING partner for Malta, our scheme is licensed to carry out this scientific study in the Maltese Islands. This video describes the process of scientific bird ringing in the Maltese Islands.
