You get good defensively by defending good players. Always try to guard the best guy on the other team. Always learn from your mistakes and don't do them again. Here's some tips:
On-ball:
Learn how you can legally handcheck. Place the hand closer to your man on his hip (fingers not palm) . Keep your other hand straight up.
Learn the cross-step because that's 50% faster than the defensive slide. Think about it as a side-sprint.
Check out the forward lean stance to get more steals.
Off-ball:
Always see the ball.
Help a lot, but not so far that you can't close out on your man when the skip pass comes.
Always box out. If your man is far away then box somebody else out.
