Al Kooper belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall. He is a session man in the vein of Leon Russell and Johnnie Johnson. He is a innovator for forming BST, the first rock horn band band even before Chicago. A great recording artist for his music with the Blues Project and the iconic Super Session recordings with Mike Bloomfield. And a great producer and discoverer of new musical groups like LYNYRD SKYNYRD. What did I leave out ?
This appears to be a live performance with the original personnel of Blood, Sweat and Tears. All the parts of the studio rendition are present (instruments, arrangements, personnel). He calls out to Fred (Lipsius) for the unmistakable sax solo, which is superb! Steve Katz's distinctive fuzz guitar fills are there too. It's a terrific historical recording, and a great testament to Al Kooper's vision.
Agreed that this is an Amazing rendition. However; the song writer Al Kooper, never made a bean from this song or album. Thats really sad. Album is called Child is Father to the Man. Listen to and promote that....not this
A "jewel"of a song- and Only Al Kooper's vocal could bring it to its regal elegance. With a rhythm section for the gods. Love you Alfonts-wherever the hell you are.
I saw Al play this at The Central on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood 3 decades ago...solo with only his electric piano. He had a white body shirt with F*ck Me scripted all over it. One of my favorite songs of all time.
Saw Al in 67"at the Village East Theater (before Fillmore) with the Blues Project, went to see him with BST at the Cafe Wha and David Clayton Whatever comes out. DISAPPOINTMENT. Saw Al with the Super Session at Filmore. Outstanding! B.B. King came out and jammed with Bloomfield and Al. This man is a gift to N.Y.C. God Bless Kooper!!
So sorry for your disappointment - I feel your pain - same thing happened to me - so excited to see BST in NH at Wiers Beach Casino - 196something (8? .. 9?) ... maybe even 1970 - I should have know Al was gone by then but I didn't have my cell phone with me so no Google - Out comes the band ... oh hell yes! Then comes that guy with the big cherub grin - WTF!!! I say WTF!!! Can I hear you all say What The FFFF!!! Felt like I was standing at the station and the train was rounding the bend off in the distance. Not sure how I could have missed the changing of the guard - I'd even heard the 'new and not improved' BST on FM radio (remember when FM was the listening goto for anyone who cared about music?) - But I was not very grounded back then and I missed the connection - Mr Kooper was off on other projects and this music was Crap! ... got the hell out of there and went for a long walk on the beach ... didn't jump in ;-)
Well what can I say about this song? I danced with a tall guy when I was about 13. Everything was easy then. Now everything is complicated and you have to watch your back..but the words well they are crystal clear. That tall guy? Well we are 55 and 62. We can chill and dance and still enjoy the song
this is definately Al Kooper's song for sure...I played organ in 60s and 70s too...but didnt sound as good as this and we played 6 nights for 4 sets...we sounded good my finger flew but didn't have the syncopatino that you see here..
no one can come close to Mr Al Kooper, he is the best
Al Kooper played in the gymnasium of my school, New England College, in 1971. I haven’t been the same since.

Al should have stayed in the band but there is no comparison between him and David Clayton Thomas as a vocalist.
ITS like an hymn simply fantastic A Masterpiece

Great sound quality...thank you for doing it justice...more than you'll ever know
Thank you more than you know Teddy K for encourage me to do justice on music.
I hear Al play that solo last night, 1/15/15, in Sacramento at Harlow's. Even solo Al owns the shit out of that great song.
You lucky man,i wish one day i can see him, wish he come to Montreal soon
Send him an email at al@alkooper.com and ask him. His web site is years out of date.

From Child is Father to the Man, Blood, Sweat & Tears. One of my favorite albums and one of the best ever.
@@aniballopez61 No way, this is live, the BS&T album is a studio recording.
It sounds like James Brown's "It's a man's world" a bit.
