  • You know those people who can mix a full song in 30 minutes or less? Or like how CLA can have a song basically mixed in the span of time it takes to play the song front to back? It might seem impressive until you realize that the reason they're able to do this is because they (or someone who worked on the project before them) spent hours preparing the material for mixing before the mix actually started.
If you're like most people, you're combining the technical tasks of editing and prep with the creative task of mixing. Your brain has to constantly switch back and forth between the two types of thought processes which robs you of your ability to mix efficiently.
Mix prep is all about getting the boring tedious stuff out of the way so that the mix session can be all about mixing.
This is an unglamorous, tedious, yet integral part of the process, so if you're not doing this and you're unhappy with your mixes, or you're wondering why it takes you so long to "mix," you may have just found the reason why.

man i was halfway to hitting my key command to hide the clip names before i remembered i was watching a video lol doesn't that bug you having stuff half covered up by the names? i also used to do the caveman delay throw pretty exclusively because at the time i thought it was easier to effect the throw track the way i wanted, but now i just have like 6 or so different delay channels in my template to cover the different timings and ping ponging and whatnot so it's way quicker to just automate a send. great video, I'm glad to see more in this series again!

Haha I actually reference the names enough that it hadn’t occurred to to me to hide them, but yeah I know that feeling of watching a DAW video and then instinctually reaching for the keyboard to change something, haha.
I have a few different send delays in my template, but the thing that I like about the cave man method is being able to fine tune the volume of each repeat independently based on whatever is happening in the music. I could set up a multi-tap delay send, but by the time I go into the plugin to adjust an individual echo I’m kind of defeating the purpose of the template. It’s also nice to not have the echo ring out in on the send return if you stop playback.
I’m glad you’re digging these, dude! Unfortunately I only have two of these videos left and they’re already filmed and awaiting edits. I decided to wrap this series up so that I can do deeper dives on individual topics.
